Here in Australia we generally blast the red light cameras with some 30/30 buckshot on the way through the intersection. If we miss the camera, the muzzle flash usually distorts the image so much that it is rendered unusable in traffic court.

Been rocking it that way since then. While parked once, I got a ticket for it (cop was being the normal asshole and looking for reasons to ticket bikers). Took it to court with pictures. Judge said if it's visible from greater than 50ft straight back then I was good!! Case dismissed! Never took it off and still on my bike currently.

Many courts have ruled red light cameras and speed cameras are unconstitutional. It presumes the owner of the vehicle is driving. Tickets are sent to owner of car rather then the operator. If someone else is driving the government wrongfully shifts the burden of proof from themselves to the owner on who's driving. Camera companies can't issue citations only police can. You need the ability to challenge the ticket at time of alleged violation because of other circumstances the camera didn't catch. There's an Equal Protection Violation when there are 2 different fines for the same offense. A cop issued ticket versus a camera generated ticket.

I'm way late to the game mainly because it's never affected me until a recent situation and even though I was in the wrong I got a bad taste from how it happen. My registration was suspended due to insurance lapse and the officer was set up on the side with the alpr on. Now I understand ALL the scare tactic propaganda around these "kidnappings! Stolen cars! Wanted criminals entering our beloved neighborhoods etc" but I see this as just another tax on citizens and further turning "police" into revenue collectors. It's great this officer was able to inform me my tag was suspended (I have current insurance and always do. Not sure what happen here) but she then proceeded to give me a 165$ ticket for it as well as 89$ for no seatbelt and 235$ for not having my license on me. I have a f*cking license and she can clearly see that in her computer but the mistake of leaving it home along with my cash and credits cards etc cost me over 200$. I have photochromatic tint... Tinting is a huge discrepancy in states based on level of tint.
This special tint allows my vehicle to stay cooler on hotter days. The brighter it is outside the darker the tint gets. Rolling down the window a few minutes makes it nearly transparent again.
The tint effect takes a few minutes. I've been using it a couple yrs now.
Rolling window down partially creates two tone window tint...I suppose I could get multiple shades in different sections too with timing sunlight & dark.

If you set out to obscure the number plate in some way to prevent it being caught by cameras or.police it is perverting the course of justice, a serious criminal offence. If you have no number plate you could claim it fell off or even if the vehicle is not registered and had no plate it's a fine & probably not a big one. Put a false plate on or flip up plates or even so-called anti flash coatings, all come under attempting to pervert the course of justice and it's a criminal offence with big penalties, usually prison. But hey, don't just take my word for it, try it and prove me wrong.
I did a tour of a traffic police facility some.years back and they had photos of some guys who partially covered the plate on a red MR2 with gaffer tape & drove it as fast as they could several times through a speed camera, bare arses out of the window etc, trying to see how fast they could go. Sadly for them there was only one red MR2 registered with the letters & digits they didn't cover & the guy got 6 months for perverting the course of justice plus all the other traffic related offences. But what would they know, they're only traffic cops who do this stuff every day. Carry on.

FYI, in Ontario Canada any license plate covers that are tinted black to partially obscure or make your plate hard to read (by human vision or by cameras) is considered illegal. To be clear, putting covers over your license plate is fine. They just cannot obscure your license plate that makes them hard to read.
Section 13.2 of the Highway Traffic Act : "every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried"
I see so many cars with darkened plates, and nearly all of them are speeding. As one officer said, "there's absolutely no need to have a darkened cover over your plate. You can be pulled over for suspicion of an unlicensed vehicle because they can't see your plate and end up with a ticket for having an obscure plate or get both!"

As a retired police officer, I do not like the big brother camera approach to traffic enforcement. I do like this idea, but it would be nice if there was a cover available that has no tint whatsoever. Officers will sometimes scrutinize plates that have a covering with even the slightest amount of tint because they stand out quite a bit. Though the plate is relatively visible, a lot of times the expiration sticker is difficult to see, due to tint, which is likely to get you stopped.
