    I love the fact that people like you are keeping the history of photography alive. Showing how they did things back in the day is hypnotizing, at least to me. The furthest I go back with my photography is 35mm. One day I will adventure further into the past. Thank you.

      I enjoy this “magic” a lot. I just finished another inspired shooting today. And every time the fixer reveals the portrait my sitters get super excited. And even after these years I am excited too.I produce all the chemicals by myself. The varnish for example takes two or more days to finish. I think that’s where my own excitement starts. Because I know it’s not only this one hour I put into one portrait, it’s so much more. And it all comes from my heart. And it is the same with the people from whom I get my equipment, the metal sheets or my lens caps for example. This passion filled energy makes all the difference.

      To be honest it’s a gut feeling. After the first plate with the same chemicals, I know how the sensitivity changes over time when the color of the collodion changes. That’s why I like the process, it’s an analog one and has to do with feeling instead of measurements

    These portraits are gorgeous, Markus. Bravo. I need to read up on this process... the step that reverses the image from negative to positive is sorcery!
    I'd be intrigued to know your thoughts on lighting - I see you are using modern strobes for this project (which makes perfect sense from a practical point of view). Would you consider a project using only natural light, or constant lights, more similar to what might have been done with this lens earlier in its life? I presume vintage exploding flashes are too dangerous or unavailable now?

    • @mhaustria
      @mhaustria  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much Richard!
      Thats a very good question you asked! This process is sensible to the blue light spectrum. That means you are depended on the UV light that is available that day and that can change. So for example it is overcast outside, you set up your sitter on a special place because you want to achieve a certain look. Then you pour the plate and put it in the silver bath. 3 minutes later you go outside and then it happens that that at this exact moment when you do your exposure the clouds are moving and your subject sits in pure sunlight. Also because you don't know how much UV light is available on that day, you have to do a series of plates to know the exposure. Because normal light meters dont see blue light. I have done it (you will find some videos on my channel) and I like it, but to work a bit quicker I prefer strobes. I also like to be able to control the light as much as possible.
      If you watch my latest video from the inspired series: th-cam.com/video/ti91h0jvqZI/w-d-xo.html you see how I varnish the plates with a hot plate. Normally they used a flame for that, but because of the ether in my darkroom I don't use anything with fire. Thats also the reason I work with modern strobes. Another reason is that I can use any Light modifier ;)
      The image appears during the fixing process, thats when the salt Sodium thiodulfate washes away the silver that was not exposed. The wet plate is still a negative afterwards, but because the parts are made of silver and the background is black it looks like a positive.
