    Hey Mdf!
    Any suggestions on getting some more front end height on my 990adv?
    Height, travel, whatever... I Love My Bike but I'd Love more travel

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To actually increase travel, you have to modify a lot of stuff, and have to do both front and rear, otherwise you really mess up the chassis geometry. One has to have custom made dampning rods, fork springs, and the shock shaft in the rear. However, most people think they need longer travel suspension, when really, with proper spring rates and valving, the ability to "stay up in the stroke" and function as if they're longer is what happens. How tall are you, and do you have the standard model, or the "S" model? What year is it?

If you dont want to mess with it, message me, and we can talk about me doing yours for you. How does your front end feel?

    • @89vainius
      @89vainius 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrDuhfactor that video would be great! I do most work myself and fork rebuild is a breeze now..im at 220lb and it feels better with the .72 springs but i still get an occasional bottom out. Although i ride this bike as hard as my fe570 so thats part of the issue.My comp clickers are half way out so maybe I should stiffen those up first and maybe add a bit more oil to them? i mostly do not like how they 'dive' easily.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would adjust your compression clickers to two out from fully bottom'd for starters, but truthfully, revalving the front end turned my bike into gold buddy, I can push real hard now, hit jumps, and basically rally on the bike, and the front feels great. The valving is surprisingly soft for this big of bike stock, and at 220 (I'm 190) you would really benefit from a valving change. We are going to do a video on how to do it on my brother in laws bike, hopefully soon.

    can improper suspension set up cause speed wobble? I have a 990 I picked up about a month ago, and I was headed down the highway with loaded boxes and was accelerating to pass a car when the speed wobble started, tried to correct it but couldn't under control before it tossed me at about 75 mph.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      James dorchak Man dude.... so sorry... absolutely. If the forks are too soft, and you have weight compressing them further, it reduces trail, which can elicit the wobble at high speed. Additionally, if a front tire has a bad wear pattern, is out of balance, or too low of air pressure for the street, it can cause the wobble too..... Hope your ok....

    • @goobs36
      @goobs36 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrDuhfactor. I managed to get away with a little bit of road rash and a broken collar bone, so I have at least 6 weeks before I can get back on and ride. the tires on the bike are new, so I'm pretty sure its not because of tire wear, besides tire pressure is there anything else I need to look at that could have caused it? and how would I go about checking the suspention? how do i tell what to soft is? sorry for all the questions, I kind of fell in love with the bike when I got it and want to make sure it doesn't toss me again.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are wonderful bikes, and I love mine. One way to tell if it is too soft is to check your front end or fork "Sag". This is a measurement of how far your forks compress from a completely unloaded position, to a loaded position, which means the bike on the ground, you and all your gear on the bike. This should be done with the rear as well. Then, this sag should be compared to recommended from the manual, which I can't remember off the top of my head. At some point, I can measure mine (which is set up extremely well now) and we can compare it to yours. This is just a measurement to see if your fork springs are stiff enough for your type of load and riding. After the proper fork springs are determined (if it needs changing), then we talk about valving. We are going to show how this is done in future videos. If your not comfortable with it, I will be offering for a modest fee to do the valving for other people.

    • @goobs36
      @goobs36 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrDuhfactor the bikes in the shop right now, but I'll do those suspension measurements and check it off the manual and run it by you as well, as far as the valving goes, I'm pretty mechanicaly inclined, but I'll have to watch your video on it and determine from there

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good bud, it is not difficult to re-valve suspension on these bikes, and I'll give the specs out on which shims to get, I'm sure you can do it :)

    • @MrDuhfactor

      keith gray Habe your fork seals been leaking, or leaked in the past?

    • @keithgray2070
      @keithgray2070 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no leaking seal and oil level air chamber set at 100mm, i beefed up the springs to .62kg but changed tham back as i thought it was this that was causing the issue

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      .62 would be better than stock buddy, but the actual oil level should be set at 20mm below the cross holes in the slider. I'll be you don't have enough oil level. If you increase the oil level some, it improves bottoming resistance even more. I set mine at 15mm below the slider holes.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What weight fork oil did you use?

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, did you bleed the fork oil when doing your final oil level check? If not, there may have been trapped air in the fork leg that reduced your total oil volume as well, just thoughts buddy.

    6'1" 215 adv r 2009

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have the same forks as mine, and at 215, you should go with the same .72kg/mm fork springs we did, and revalve the shim stack in the base valve per the videos I've done. It will keep the front of your bike up higher in the stroke, and give you much more usable travel. At your height, I wouldn't raise the bike to increase travel, (my brother in law is 6'4" and uses stock height) but rather firm up the front end so you can stay in a more usable fork range. It's hard to describe in writing, but if you watch the rest of the valving series we did on this bike, you will get a better feel for what I'm trying to say.
