The first time I heard about Diana Krall was back in 2001 (the year I've met my girlfriend, my future wife). There was a radio station, where music like this was played in the late night. I was driving my car back to home from my girlfriend and this song was on. And I knew the very moment that I found something fantastic. 4 days ago we were at the VeszpremFest and after more than 20 years we heard Diana play in live. Life is good.
Diana pours the smokiness into this song... turning it into a 6:21 Flirt ! Blossom Dearie sings it a little faster, clearly a sassy lady who knows what she wants. Both are different, their voices as unique as their personalities... and Both are truly wonderful ! :-)
Diana was with me during very early mornings in my office when I started my mechanical design career. 5am-8am I would practice using 3D modeling software. Lights off desk lamp on. PC on, software launched, Diana, Brian Culbertson, Richard Elliot, Chris Botti and many others kept me company in the mid 90s.
From 1999 to ~2006, I attended at least 5 or 6 performances of Diana Krall in New York City, including the 2002 Tanglewood Jazz Festival in Lenox MA. She was devoted to the American Songbook back then and sang it to perfection. In 2003 she married Elvis Costello who pushed her to "be herself" and sing her own songs and she quickly tanked. To the point that at a concert in Radio City, I watched numerous people shout to her to play the old songs she was known for and they paid to see, and she turned around from her piano and said "these are my new songs and this is what we are playing tonight. Many got up and left. I have no patience for popsy tunes. I firmly believe that you can be a Jazz/Saloon singer or you can be Taylor Swift, you can't be both. So I also walked out. I still have all her CDs from that era but we broke up at that Radio City performance and it's never been the same.
Diana, this performance was my introduction to you. I fell madly in love. You are a silky, smooth, sexy, sweet vocal seductress. Love what you do. Truly hypnotic.
