You had them upside down, but they’re cheap thin aluminium, you’re not going to get a good result without burning. They’re largely used for heating water to in turn warm through boil in the bag meals.

I think you need to have the handles on opposite sides ...ie small pan on bottom with handle on left side ....cover with larger pan on top with handle on right side ...or vice versa

I recall, faintly, having one of those when I was a child (United States). You video brought back the memory! Thank you my friend! 👍

In early 60s when I was a boy was planning with this mess kit, tie a rope around it's handle and drag it to the ground like a toy bus.
You can try it and enjoy the drive.

'Dixies' .. I got my first set in 1968 as young Military Conscript .. together with a foldable Esbit Stove and Heat Tablets. Loved them then and still using a set today.
The secret to non-sticking is to avoid where possible, 'fry-ups' and keeping the heat down with regular stirring.
Also, they make for a very nice 'Bain Marie' to keep already cooked food warm whilst busy with the other .. a nice 'Double Boiler' too.
    Take care ..

I used the mess tins for many years, then ditched them for the Crusader set. You gave the alloy tins there which are a real pain to clean and keep clean. They blacken up almost immediately when used with the Army issue hexamine blocks and burner] and weigh a ton too with the burner and fuel blocks. They were decent enough in their day, but weren’t ever good. I hated them to be honest. I used all sorts of fry pans and pots , mostly Trangia as they were available in the shops, rather than our own mess tins. All countries have/had military issue cook sets and I think they were all better than the British mess tins. I’m not surprised about that either.

'Weigh a Ton'!!!!! They're light as a feather........Great bit of kit, but agree they Blacken up bad, but easily cleaned in soil, sand or lightly abrasive material.

I doubt British Soldiers used them Dutch Oven style. Typically their rations are stews and, of course, tea.

I am sure they mostly used them to boil water, but why not use a cantain cup, easier to carry if you already had a cantain.

Mac-n-cheese. I can't remember the last time I had that and I'm sure I didn't have it with garlic and chilies. Looks like it would be a challenge to clean. Best wishes Bob.

I started adding the garlic and chilies a few years ago, its a part of the recipe for me now.

0:45 The blue & white tape is probably the customs inspection sealing tape from when it entered Thailand. If stuff can't X-ray well (like a metal box) it will get flagged for hand inspection. I can't imagine the Tommy soldiers in the trenches ever keeping those clean. Then again, they probably only used it to boil water for tea.
Now I'm hankering for Mac & Cheese too. I gotta stop watching folks cook on TH-cam. lol
