    To be honest, I liked the tone on the knock off better. They were both good, but the knock off had a warmth to it that the real one didn't. The real one sounded more detailed though. If I was looking for a distortion pedal, I'd be happy with either one, but my wallet would be happier with the knock off.

  • @danielfrabotta5501
    @danielfrabotta5501 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    it was pretty easy to tell these two apart as while both had the same character of distortion, the real one had a higher quality audio signal coming through. That said, there were moments where the two sounded nearly identical to one another so the makers of the knock off would deserve sincere congratulations were their pedals not blatant knock offs. I mean, they could have simply given it a different but similar name like Mooer and others tend to do and it probably would have been fine. At any rate, great video and please keep 'em coming. In addition to outright fakes, I'd love to see some comparisons between these well known pedals and their more affordable clones. Thanks for all you do and please keep rocking.

  • @nicholasberndt6224

    I heard the difference right from the start, and knew the real one. It was subtle, but it was there. As for having to set the controls differently to get the same sound, you have to do that to any two “identical” pedals due to variations in parts and their tolerances. Just ask Josh Scott and Brian Wampler. Thanks for the good videos.

    • @wesleynorton3079
      @wesleynorton3079 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disagree. The difference was pretty obvious to me. The real Riot had a much tighter low end. Like a kick you in the face level difference. I started out playing bass so a mushy low end like the fake one had was a dead give away it was cheap. Even on the higher notes where the two sounded very similar there a smal but noticablee gap in clarity.

    To my ears, and through quality headphones, the fake one sounded noticeably better than the real one. Also, I like what you said about being "ethical." Which made me think about just how unethical it is to gouge someone for $200 for a piece of metal containing simple wiring and circuitry, just because you can. Imo, the $30 fake sounds better and costs less -- so to hell with "ethics." I have plenty of cash and I'ma get me one of those fakes out of sheer principle.

    • @zxbc1
      @zxbc1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@terryenglish7132 It doesn't really matter if it's an original circuit, most pedal circuits are not patented, so there's really no issue of intellectual properties involved here.
      The real ethical question here is copying the look and name exactly of a popular and expensive one, which can potentially enable people to pass them out as real ones to defraud customers who want the real one. If the pedal was made to not look exactly the same and use the same name, then there'd be zero ethical concern.
      As for "charging more than the material's worth", that's hardly an ethical concern. You can charge anything however much you want, there's zero ethical problem there because nobody is forced to buy it, it's a free market. The $30 fake doesn't charge you the actual cost of the material (plus labor) either, which probably comes to no more than half of the price tag. In fact, the cheaper labor cost probably warrants ethical concerns since it is made possible due to non-humane labor conditions and/or environmental impacts. So if anything, the cheap pedal probably has more problems in this area.

    There is a point on marketing and branding and Suhr defintely puts a lot of dollars into that and it reflects on the price. But there is also the work on research and development of the product. For the most part I couldnt tell the difference on the two pedals, and it is kind of eye opening that a $ 200 pedal can sound the same as a $ 20, but there is also something to be said on the research to create such a product.

    Listened through Bose Headphones on my PC and Recording Studio Sound Card that was Eq'ed Flat the Knock off seemed to have a touch more Muddy sound on the leads how ever in the Rhythm Style playing very close. Perhaps if the levels were really more tweaked it would be closer but the real thing was did I hear 170.00 difference in sound quality not really. Now listening with the Bose plugged into my Samsung Galaxy virtually identical but the Audio Circuitry in a Smart Phone does not touch the quality of the Sound Card in the PC.
    Also when I played this video review on my PC I then went back and played with Reverb Hall and Dolby Thx on and gave it a dramatic difference between the pedals. Probably for small Clubs that Knock off would be fine in a Large Hall or Venue on Stage it would sound like the Audio Engineer needs to drop the mids.

    Thank you for posting this video. It was informative and interesting. Both pedals sounded good and extremely close to me. The Suhr definitely did not sound 7 times better in order to justify the significant difference in cost. Honestly, most people can't afford a $200 distortion pedal, which makes a good sounding $30 distortion pedal very appealing. More of these types of videos would be quite useful. Allowing people to hear and judge for themselves if an alternative cheaper version is for them.

    3 1/2 minutes in. B has more highs and is slightly more transparent, but what was the design goal of the original ? A has a fuller bass, so I'm guessing that's the original since this is mega distortion.. They both sound good. You're hearing op amp as well as diode distortion, so here for sure rolling op amps will change the sound. The Riot has an overall gain of 10,000 w each op amp gain stage at 100. At 9 V you can have a gain of about 20 (26db) depending on the p-ups before the op amp starts distorting.

    i guessed right, and I say guessed because there's not a very noticeable difference, pedal B seemed to give mor overtones and a wider spectrum of frecuencies, but is not something that can be easily noticed in my opinion...

    The fake one had a less cleaner sound, but to be honest, is incredible close in sound to the real one

    B sounds a little tighter. Not so much wild tail end harmonics. But either pedal would be a fantastic buy at $30

    B was better but only by a small percentage. If I’m a small band playing gigs (I’m not) I would opt for pedal A.

    Unfortunately I'm poor and therefore unethical. I have 2 Bartolini Hexaphonic p-ups that I wanted a Hex analogue distortion for. I bought 6 Sonic Cake Sharks for $94. $19 each if its just 1. If I had gotten Riots it would have been $1,200 ! Good Shark review on 60 cycle hum... Here and w other effect boxes ,the OCD for example, I notice the original sounds better in terms of transparency, if you value that. Maybe its just better grade op amps. I made a just 1 op amp w a gain of 10,000, + - 9V supply distortion box, basically a crappy square wave output. The better the op amp the more you got knarly highs, but it was more transparent. W the Riot, they have filtering to tame the knarlyness, so you still get the transparency.

    The real one sounded wetter, and this is something I’m always looking in pedals, I don’t know where that wet thing comes from, maybe it has something to do with the frequency range of the pedal ???
