    Hey Tom, I'm very excited to see your "expansion" to this video! I'm curious where you and Sam are in your opinions now that more Armada has been released. Please do a video sometime soon, thanks a lot bud.

    I wish this came out BEFORE X-Wing, since this scale is much more to my liking..

      I was not interested in X-Wing and never bought anything (but considering about just buying some of the boxes for the ships, like the Millenium Falcon, etc.). I was really expecting some fleet battles game...Damn, someone did hear me...

    Hi Sam and Tom,
    Thanks for the great review (viewed after buying the game).
    I used to play battlefleet Gothic a lot. I really loved the game : it was epic with lots of capital ships, the maneuvers were really important (far more than luck), and the painting is fairly easy.
    But well, there was one problem : fighters were highly uninteresting. I like the system in Star Wars Armada with the "engaged" thing which permit to use your squadrons as covers. I like the fact that the fighters have their unique capabilities, whereas in BFG, all fighters engaged in combat were just "blown away" except for some, which could remain on a 4+.
    I like the damage and repair system in Star Wars Armada, which is really cool and tactical. The one in BFG was also quite good with some special orders used to reduce your damage ("Brace for Impact"), and different states of the ships depending on the overall damage points received (crippled, etc.).
    I prefer the BFG box for what it offered (8 cruisers), but yeah, I really like the models they done for SWA. Ok, it's REALLY expensive in France (100,00€), but I've been waiting for that game since I was a teenager, playing Star Wars, the RPG (D6).
    I'm pretty sure I will really love that game, I'm absolutely sure I'll buy every single ship that will come up. I already decided it last year when I first heard of the game...

      Thanks for that perspective! BFG always intrigued me in the store displays, I just could never justify the price as I was into WH40K at the time. Thanks again!

      @VinceYT2408 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, finally, it's not that much expensive in France...just seen the price in the US. Played it twice today, I really love the game. But grrrrrrr have to wait the wave 2 to get the Imperial-class Star Destroyer...grrrrrr

    • @VinceYT2408
      @VinceYT2408 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sam Healey After several plays today, one with all options added (basically, an ambush of General Dodonna's Pride by the Star Destroyer Dominator, soon helped by a Nebulon Support Frigate (with Leia onboard) and the Red Squadron led by Luke Skywalker...), the gameplay is very rich and you have a bit more tactical options than in Battlefleet Gothic. This latter should be better for very large battles, but Star Wars Armada will be really great for a half dozen ships fighting each others. And you should be able to make a storylined campaign for players alongside a roll playing game etc.
      So after these plays, 2 concussion missiles up for me.

    I'm glad Sam highlighted the price point. I think it's overpriced by 25 bucks or more easily. Overall it looks like a much more expensive system than X-Wing. I'm not going to buy two sets of it for $140 that's just crazy, but that's exactly what it takes to get started for real. I'm not counting out that I'll do it at some point, but I've already got X-Wing and I'm happy with the play. I don't play miniature games enough to collect several of them anyway.

    They should have had 2 different starter sets. To damn expensive, especially galling that they skimped on the number of dice. Still looks like a good "event" game even if it is only 2 player.

    • @arakuss1

    Wow, I wish FFG had the Star Trek license. This combat system fits Star Trek ship-to-ship combat. I'm tempted to buy it and put Star Trek ships on the bases.

  • @rmair62
    @rmair62 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The price point is the only thing stopping me from going here. I already own X-Wing, Imperial Assault and D&D Attack wing and they rarely hit the table. I just cant fit yet another collectable game into my budget.

    • @jonathanlewis82
      @jonathanlewis82 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      pencilpauli I wish I was into Star Trek, as my local game store has a really large selection of items for that, and they all look different and interesting, especially the massive Borg cube. But I never really got into Star Trek, so I feel as though I wouldn't enjoy it as much without that interest in the lore. I like X-Wing, because I like that close ship-to-ship dogfight feeling you get when playing it.

    • @Marinealver
      @Marinealver 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      agreed on the price. With X-wing you can get a core set and 2 imperial small ships and 2 rebel small ships and have enough components for 100 point standard Imperial or rebel squadron for $100. Heck even if you go 2 core sets and 1 E-wing and 1 Tie defender for aprox. $110 USD. For $100 you get the starter set which is not enough to play Armada standard as they have a 300 point limit. With X-wing the expansion packs are $15 dollars for the small (exception on the new star viper which is $20) and $30 dollars for the big ships (exception for Decimator which is $40). For Armada the expansion pack is $20 dollars at the minimum. So to get a rebel and imperial playable squad you are looking at no less than $140 USD.

    I almost wish they had gone with a 40K Gothic theme instead. While the star destoryers are cool as hell, I'm still not convinced X-Wing and Armade wont fill the same need.
    I'm am curious though as to what models we will see in the future and how the game will evolve.

    • @Hedgehobbit
      @Hedgehobbit 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this game a lot longer than X-Wing? One of the main reasons I love Star Wars X-Wing is how quick and easy it is to set up and the game length would last us about less then an hour. :)

  • @Jukejointjeze0n
    @Jukejointjeze0n 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im going to argue that you dont NEED two. They sell dice and movement tools seperately, now. The only thing youd need two of is range rulers, which they really should have included. That being said, I do agree with Tom that you need more than whats in the box. Even though its only a month or so away, I personally wouldnt have released this til wave 1 was concurrent. I am very exited to get my hands on Imperial Gladiators Class ships to compliment my Star Destroyer. The Assult Frigate also looks top marks.
    From my own personal copy, the models are great, but the paint looks a bit rushed. Hopefully quality improves to Xwing levels after the initial production rush slows down.
    As for Armada to Xwing, I would perhaps wait for the "large" fighters to come out. (Falcon/Slave). Though I did hear someone proposing an RPG to IA to Armada to Xwing game. That would have taken about 2 weeks straight, but sounded fun.

    Basically it's x wing with bigger ships and a whole fleet instead of ship to ship in x-wing you play as a pilot or ships crew and in armada you play as a admiral or fleet commander.

    How does it compare to Battlefleet Gothic? Granted BFG isn't very easy to find now, or opponents either for that matter, I really enjoy that game. This looks to scratch the same itch just not quite as deep possibly. Can anybody help that has played them both?

  • @kereminde
    @kereminde 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    MAYBE if I could interest the gaming group here and pool some money for the base game *and* some extra components to give some variety. I am, however, the only one who likely salivates due to having enjoyed playing the heck out of the old Lucasarts flight sims.(You'd think X-Wing would be more up my alley, but in the end I was less enthused than I am over getting back to more large-scale.)
    I know one person might be interested - we did MechWarrior: Dark Age together but largely pooling money on them. But it's a different thing entirely to pick this up

  • @stormquiver
    @stormquiver 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really had a problem when one guy used a combo of cards that essentially gave him max damage no matter what he rolled. and FFG errata'd that it was a legal tactic. for me it broke the game. I love the minis and the game. but when balance is so tipped like that, it's unplayable for me. maybe if I got some of the newer stuff it might be better now. we'll see

  • @MasticinaAkicta
    @MasticinaAkicta 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting. So where in x-wing a big ship is REALLY BIG in this they use squadrons and smaller models. Yet some rules are allot like X-wing.
    Evolution not Revolution. Still that might be quite enjoyable!

  • @Justdave1472
    @Justdave1472 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me, the price point is killer. Even at $69 dollars (local stores will most likely be at $99), it is just too expensive for me. I already play X-Wing (though my interest in it is waning) and DnD Attack Wing (with growing interest) among other miniatures games and I just do not see the need for me to pick this one up. It feels like I would rarely get it to the table, and to play it well, I would have to pick up another set (at $69 to $99), or expansions (which I'm guessing will be about $30).

  • @EclecticCamel
    @EclecticCamel 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think FFG made a mistake not waiting on this game a bit. For me, I understand the mechanics aren't the same as X Wing, but that covers my 2 player space game itch. When I game, I only very rarely have just one other player, so right now, after spending a lot of money on SW LCG, Imperial Assault and X Wing within the past couple months, I just can't justify the cost for another 2 player Star Wars game. I think I have about all the X Wing I want, so maybe I'll eyeball Armada later this year, but right now, Armada looks like an easy $150 - 200 investment for 2 core sets and an expansion or two (going by the $70 actual retail price of Armada, not MSRP), just to get the tip wet, so to speak.

      +VinceYT2408 I've always considered this the strategic level game and X-wing the tactical game. Why because in this it's turn limited and you are planning ahead quite a bit, where as X-wing is reactionary every turn.

  • @benfoster6715

    I would have bought this if X Wing didn't come out first. The only reason I have x wing is because it's a game I can play regularly with a group. I'd rather play a dogfighting game with more simulation value like check your 6!
    Given the way FFG has struggled with their support of their lifestyle games (6 months between releases in X Wing and SW LCG) and the annoying restriction of exclusively bundling cards with ships, I'll pass.
    I'm personally tired of the constant repackaging of the same images and "products" via licenses. If I wanted to play a vehicle based, low model count minis game, I'd rather buy the rules supplement and a large amount of build your own models for the same price as two cores. Vehicles that size are fun and relatively easy to paint.

    I would have loved to play this game. But its easily overcosted by about 40-50 bucks. Come on FFG, 3 painted minis and 10 squadrons do not justify this price point. A couple of cards dont justify the price. Having only 1 range pointer and so few dice is simply unforgivable for the amount of money you pay for this box.
    I understand the raised price on the Armada expansions. Bigger ship=higher cost. I get it.
    But 100 bucks for a entry-level experience??? No way.
    That price point was justified for what you got in Imperial Assault. But if you can as 30/35 bucks for X-Wing, this should have been 50-60 at the most.
    With a heavy heart Ill have to pass on this one. Until a significant price drop takes place, this game is pricing itself out of the market.

    • @thedicetower
      @thedicetower  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      slymaster9 No, I just can't agree with you here. You get a LOT in the box. Yes, it's expensive, but there's three models, one of them quite big and painted. And then a pile of smaller plastic models. And then there's the Star Wars license, which isn't cheap. X-wing is $29 on Coolstuff, and this is $69 there. A little more than double the price, and it's about double the amount of stuff.

    • @slymaster9
      @slymaster9 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      See, $69 is on the edge of a defendable price point. Sadly, across the sea (I'm from europe) I am only seeing it for €95+
      I am just not comfortable with a price point like that, when in the review itself you guys say that it's 'baby-steps'.

      The Dice Tower The Australian price (at my local stores) is the equivalent of $130 USD. The Xwing starters, however, can be found for the equivalent of $30 USD.
      Prices have definitely been jacked up excessively for the overseas market. Doesn't help that the model quality (in particular the paint job) feels much less impressive than X-Wing.

      The Dice Tower I can't agree... At least in Romania, Europe, it's priced at aprox 110 euro, compared with space hulk 4th ed the later was 100 euro. It's higher priced than imperial assault here... I would have got it but 120$ is a bit much

    Big time LOL for the price point and contents...you look at Twilight Imperium 3 and then this and go...."um, really?"
    And TI3 used to be a full $20 less at retail.
    I think that while FFG getting the Star Wars license seemed awesome, I think it doomed FFG fans to an endless parade of expansions, microtransactions, and nickle and diming us to death with constant "system" releases.
