This film really was massively ahead of its time. It’d be another decade and a half before the rest of Hollywood began considering this sort of grounded, gritty take on superhero storytelling.

The amazing thing is that almost nobody going into this movie realized that it was a Superhero movie. And when Split came out, nobody going in knew it was a sequel to Unbreakable.

Honestly Bruce Willis has been type cast as an action actor but everytime he is in a movie where he needs to act it's always great.
6th sense and this are his best work

Unbreakable is an elite genre film and one of my all time favorite films in general. Everything about it that might come off as a gimmick or corny doesn't because of flawless direction. The ending reveal ties the whole film together perfectly, it caps all the threads that were there all along. And the scene where the son threatens to use the gun on David, and the situation of the marriage comes to its head, along with the reveal he faked his injury, is perfect dramatic writing. Love it.

As far as Shyamalan goes, Last Airbender and After Earth seem to be director-for-hire jobs when his career was not doing so well. Other than that, he is undoubtedly a very capable director who knows how to use a camera and create gorgeous shots. He’s also quite good at casting and working with actors. The hit-or-miss aspect seems to come from his scripts, but that said I will say this: He always goes for it, and tries to do something wild and imaginative and unexpected. Sometimes it works brilliantly and sometimes it fizzles spectacularly, but he is not afraid to just go nuts, and I respect him for that. I think, when we’re all gone, that history may be kinder to him than we all expect now.

I like that when Jeremy Jahns did a retrospective review of "Unbreakable," he said "Of course, we all know that Bruce Willis actually IS invincible in real life. He made THIS movie (shows a poster for "A Good Day to Die hard"), and he STILL gets work. He is...UNBREAKABLE!"

Ppl wanted some science fiction and where mad about the twist.
But it made everything better and more tragic

it;s a great film, and his early works are not really about the twists, they are about mixing genre films with tight dramatic writing.

this is a great trilogy, Shyamalan got a very interesting and unique take on the whole superhero idea here :) this is where he got his famous twists right :D

love that movie, it is both a comic book movie, or regular movie. The camera angles and the visuals, like an issue #1 of a comic. That end is classic.

Shyamalan is a self professed Alfred Hitchcock aficionado, a lot of his films reflect this, even making cameo appearances in his own films the way Hitchcock did.🎥🎥🎥

At 3:29, I never noticed this until someone pointed it out. There were plenty of empty seats including one row in front of Bruce's. She chose to sit there on purpose. So really I feel like she's the piece of shit here, either she was just looking to show off her ring, or she actively chose Bruce to cheat with, then lost her nerve.

in mythology and religion gods and goddesses and heroes and heroines were used as role models to inspire the youth and community, superheroes are a modern day form of mythology, the gods and heroes of our science fiction modern world.

Agree with another review that Unbreakable would have done much better if it had come out before Sixth Sense. This movie is MNS' finest work, and also Samuel L. Jackson's finest work.

You need to watch Split next! It’s connected to Unbreakable and James McAvoy should’ve been nominated for his role but as usual horror movies doesn’t get the love it deserves so…now Mr Glass is the third movie in the trilogy and it has some decent scenes but it was super disappointing, it’s not a good movie so you check it out if you want but please watch Split because just like Unbreakable it’s a good movie.
    My ratings:
    Unbreakable 7/10
    Split 7/10
    Mr Glass 4/10

Out of the three great films Shyamalan made on the trot, including The Sixth Sense and Signs, this was the least successful and more poorly regarded of the three at the time. I think of it as the equivalent of Hitchcock's Vertigo (which was hated upon release and took many years to be discovered to be a masterpiece).
It's a shame that you already know Split is connected. No-one knew that when Split came out, and I remember how jazzed I was personally to discover that, as we all did in the last scene of Split. That was his big twist for me. However, I never saw Glass. How it ended was met with such disdain by people reviewing it. The end of a Shyamalan film is supposed to stun you in a good way, so that you walk away talking about how you missed the signs all the way through. The end could either make or brake a Shyamalan film and, after seeing The Village and The Happening, I couldn't sit through another of his films that would probably disappoint me with its ending.
The bottom line is that you should love Split but just don't expect too much of Glass, as everyone I know who's seen it hates it.
