    They're like a bad relationship where you can't help loving them, but they break your heart continuously (which is how often they themselves break, arg!).

      Rebecca Tregear this is the best description I have ever heard regarding these pencils. The reason I tried for a third time with them is because I love them so much and think they are worth it. I think if I'd purchase 144 pencils, 2 x 72 sets, of any other brand there is no way I'd punish myself a third time. But with Prisma it was different and I am so happy that I did. Excellent post.

      mine are not breaking at all. derwent coloursoft were breaking more than prismas. sometimes i could go through the whole pencil. i have never seen anything like that with prismas.

    Well i love these pencils..have been using the small 48 set for quite a few pieces, i bought the 150 set recently and only sharpen them with the prismacolor hand sharpener which only sharpens a short point which does tend to stay whole and not break.. i dont know if this helps anyone 😊

    I still love mine, I use a xacto knife to sharpen, helps keep them from not breaking as much.

    I did enjoy this video, there seems several repeat problems that these pencils have and to be honest, no matter how soft they are they should not be breaking any more than say Derwent colour soft or pastel pencils. For that reason I don’t see why anyone would invest their money in a substandard pencil , when we already have a choice of other pencils. I have a lot of pencils, but have never bought these , I just don’t have the money too throw at them- hoping they will be ok. This video alleviates my fears too some extent but I’ll stick to other pencils until they get there act together 100% of the time.

    Hi Harry
    I've watched this video before when it came out. But I've just watched it again because I was given the 150 set for Christmas. I found the pencil sharpening part of this soooo good. I've been terrified of sharpening them and hadn't even contemplated using my expensive Caran d'Ache hand cranked sharpener because I felt it would strip and expose too much core. But you gave be the confidence to try it just now and it works like a dream. I've used it on the shorter side (which is still long and almost a complete point with this sharpener, it just doesn't quite go needle sharp on the end) and realised that although it strips a lot of the colour paint off the pencil to expose more wood, the core is handled quite carefully. I didn't loose any material by sharpening them from the factory set point to the new point, just exposed more wood. I have now settled on the shorter point but turning the knob back a full turn (had to mark it with a Sharpie to know where I was).
    Thanks so much for giving me the confidence to try it.

    I wonder if using a shorter nib on my pencils will help me avoid snapping the cores of colored pencils or pencils in general since I tend to be heavy-handed.

  • @DrawingWithFire

    Great video Harry! 😁 I have definitely found that if you get a sharp short point on the prismacolor, in general it causes the pencils to break a lot less. My first prismacolor pencils are from 2006. I bought either the 36 or 72 set and then slowly added more pencils. I do love them fir thrir softness, but i hate how many are below goid in lightfastness. That is what I wish they would fix the most. Anyway, I'm glad you are getting over the flu. It really sucks that you got it in the first place. I hooe everything else us going ok. Take care my friend! 🤗

      Valarie Connell /DrawingWithFire have you found a sharpener that gives a short but sharp point? I have a manual crank sharpener from Caran d'arch (solid metal, it's a thing of hefty, engineering beauty), but it strips the wood back so far that I feel I'm wasting it (that may just be an illusion due to the amount of wood it exposes from the painted barrel). On the adjusted shorter setting, like Harry's M&R sharpener, it produces a blunter nib rather than a point.

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sue, I have a manual crank Derwent that Harry shows. But I also found this sharpener and it does a great short point:
      Acurit Dial-a-Point Pencil Sharpener on amazon www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QN3Y4O/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      I don't have any problems with this little handheld sharpener, but I got one for hubby & his dial got stuck and then stopped sharpening.

      Sue Wilkinson the prismacolor sharpener also does 2 different tips. www.amazon.com/dp/B004ZDL0K2/ref=psdc_1069806_t1_B004M59S34

      Valarie Connell /DrawingWithFire thank you for that recommendation. That looks almost exactly like the T'Gaal pencil sharpener, of which I have several because they are great. Not a super sharp point at 1 or 2, but adequate.

    • @ladyhecate9450
      @ladyhecate9450 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great video. I use these pencils the most because of their softness, blend great, and provides a variety of colors. I am very careful with my pencils and treat them like gold. When I sharpen, I do not turn the pencil but the sharpener. I hold pencil in left hand and have sharpener in right and turn carefully. Sort of like in school using their sharpener. You put pencil in sharpener and held it while turning the handle of the sharpener with your right hand. Between these two things, I have less breakage. I do have other pencils like FC and Caran D'ache Pablo, the latter being a tad too hard. I use these pencils a bit but go right back to PC pencils. I think after watching your other video on caran d'ache luminous that I will hold off buying these as I have only been coloring for a year in Adult Coloring Books. Thank you for your advice. Very informative.

    I really enjoy my prismacolor pencils which I have all bought open stock (so I can pick out the light fast ones). So far (knock on wood) I haven’t had any of the problems with my pencils that other people have had.
    I’ve seen some fan art with people using these pencils with marker, however I am not their yet. I just wish that these were a little more light faster than they are

      So what will happen if I put them in the sun? Will the leads close together or repair or anything, or does the sun just protect it from breaking?

Ive put them on the back ledge of my car and in the microwave but the paint bubbles abit in the microwave! Thank you so much for presenting the prismacolours. I read an article you have written about the history of these gorgeous pencils.
    I found out that there was a 24 set of a line named „lightfast“. Unfortunately the set is not available. Could it be the company add the pencils of this set to the 150, so are they, renamed, included now in this set? As far as I know is the beautiful and very lightfast colour „pomegranate“, former name „violet thio“ in this set. But I only read from this specific colour and wonder if the others are included, too

    This is the second video I've seen on sharpening Prismacolors and it is by far the best. The other guy was preoccupied with his special technique. You inadvertently showed me that the three sharpeners I have are kind of trash. One of them was bought at a drugstore and I have to use them in a specific order to get a respectable point. Thanks to this video and your video on sharpeners alone, I'm going to up my game.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your very kind comment and I am so glad that you have found some help in my videos, thank you so much. Finding a good sharpener can be more difficult than you think. I tried loads of different sharpeners before I found the three I use now, but there is one key point that a lot of people over look as I did as well. Whatever sharpener you purchase, make sure you can get replacement blades for it. The little round brass M&R sharpener has spare blades which I think cost about £2 for 8 blades and they are super sharpe. Every time you replace them, it is like cutting through butter when you sharpen a pencil.

    What’s the best size set of prismacolor to start with as I am thinking of purchasing a set. I keep changing my mind between the tin of 48 and the tin oh 72. I can’t afford the 150 yet. I would really like to try them but I keep getting put off by all the bad reviews I watch of them.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amber, before I finished reading your comment in full, I was just going to say the 72 set, however I finished reading and noticed that you have not really used them before and have been put off a bit by all the horror stories.
      With that information in mind, all I can say is this. I purchased two 72 Sets of Prismacolor before I got the 150 set and the reason I bought two sets of 72 was because of the cores breaking. But then I took the plunge and bought the 150 set because I was so in love with the huge color range of 150 gorgeous colors. Out of the 150 set I purchased, I think I have had one maybe 2 pencils that have not sharpened very well, the rest have been perfect.
      Now, the only thing I can attribute this all to is when I purchased both 72 sets, I was not very accomplished in colored pencil art. As a result I used cheap blunt sharpeners, but when I purchased the 150 set, sometime later, I understood the importance of a decent sharpener and one that I could purchase replacement blades for, but that doesn't mean expensive sharpeners, just a good one. I have added a link to my video about sharpeners if you are interested. bit.ly/2oECehE
      So on the information I have spoke about, ordinarily I would recommend buying a few open stock and trying them out, but I would suggest unless you know a good reliable place to purchase them from, don't order them open stock as they will more than likely get damaged in transit and not through anyones fault just that they are delicate cores. I can suggest The Coloured Pencil shop which is an online store and run by an amazing lady who is also in the UK Coloured Pencil Society and she sells loads of open stock pencils even Prismacolor. She lives here in the UK but ships all over the world and so she knows exactly how to protect them as best as can be expected for travel. bit.ly/ColPenShop
      I would say, if you have the money, get the 72 set, but also make sure you have a really good sharpener, something like the M&R Brass sharpener that you can buy replacement blades for and they are amazingly sharp. amzn.to/2kBdjKQ This link is to the actual sharpener I am referring to.
      I hope this information can help you a bit if you think of anything else please don't hesitate to ask.

    I love the way they blend yet I can't stand how much they break on me. The company really needs to lower the prices on these sets if they are going to keep making them the way they do. Or Take the time out & fix the issue that makes them break like they do. Thank you for your review. Have a great day.

    If you think that a pencil lead is going to break, try putting the pencil in the microwave for about five but no more than ten seconds afterwords wait to cool it downs and then sharpening the pencil should be no problem, some pencils may be a bit shattered from the inside but when it’s been in the microwave, it will melt together to be once again a solid lead again.

  • @robicarm
    @robicarm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have Prismcolor Premiers, and have a love/hate relationship with them. The pencil sharpener grinder is the best, and a clean steel blade sharpener is my fave. I think wax builds up and catches the soft core so I clean it with solvent & sharpen with graphite pencil. I've heard soak in hot water, which turned out bad because i will cause the case to swell and split. I thought one day that I'd tried hot dry rice that I microwaved until it is fairly warm to touch then I buried the Prismas or any wax pencil and pulled them out when the rice is luke-cooled. This seems to work well on cracked or dry cores without destroying the pencils.

    Enjoyed the review video. I had vowed not to buy Prisma colors for more than one reason, but had a gift card, so I bought a small set. Not really disappointed because my expectations were not high. Lots of tips chipped and sharpened crooked and one blue has a split barrel. Never had any brand have a totally split barrel. Glad I only tried a small tin and won't be getting any more.

      I have been using these pencils today along with some Castle Art pencils - the only two I have that will work on some rather slick paper in a lovely coloring book. KohI-I-Noor and Irojiten had trouble. Anyway, I now realize what the fuss is about these pencil - lovely blending; perhaps scored enough on that alone to overlook all the other problems.

    When I bought my first set I bought the scholars and the quality was ok but I did get breakage. I eventually upgraded to the 72 set and had a pencil break here and there. Now I just purchased the 150 set because of the amazing deal they had. ( 62.00 usd) so far not a broken pencil. Either I have been lucky and have had a good batch or im just sharpening different from everyone else. I mainly use the prismacolor bullet sharpner. The trick is to not rotate the pencil but you need to rotate the sharpner. Dont let the pencil rock back in forth. If you can not rotate the sharpner then dont use that one. The pencil is what is supposed to remain still. I do this with my polychromos as well even though thats probably not necessary. I too was scared of repurchasing and getting the 150 pack but i figured it was a good enough deal to take the chance.

    I can, t understand why should 150 be different from 72, it does not make sense . It should be the Same Quality all through the range, they used to be called karisma and they were notorious then for being delicate for breaking Beautiful pencils though thanks for sharpening will put in in bookmark

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ann prince hi Ann I'm not so sure it has anything to do with the set size. I think it is more to do with me, I have changed, I know how to look after pencils better. Rather than just opening the tin and spilling the pencils out onto a table top, I remove the pencils like they are little explosives lol. Also I used a cheap 45p sharpener back then, now my sharpeners are much higher quality, the M&R German sharpeners are excellent as is the Derwent.
      If it does have anything to do with the sets, it might be that 150 set is in a nice card board box well protected where as the other set are all tins and stacked on top of each other. But of course I am just guessing here and really think it is more to do with me.
      Thank you so much for the comment and stopping by the channel.

The manufacturing of the pencils is so fragile that thay should start selling prismicolors pencils in dollar stores in stead of professional art supply stores. 😡

Unfortunately even using Kum sharpener I had problems sharpening my prisms, which made me very sad. The polychromes pointed smoothly.
