- Learn how to use FreeCAD to unwrap and export a 3D object to a DXF file in a 2D form. We will prepare and unwrap or flatten the 3D model so it can be used for laser cut, paper cut or CNC.

Handy video - Thanks very much for your efforts. It also served as a gentle introduction to the murky abyss of the draft workbench 😉 cheers from Canada.
Me ha encantado,el tiempo que llevaba yo luchando con la exportación, muchísimas gracias
Interesting Approach. Nicely done. Your content is always very useful! Always look forward to your new material.
Thank you for the kind comments, great to hear your finding them useful
Thanks, very good and crystal clear.
Great to hear
Thank you
that's pretty useful
Thanks man! My object was more complex with obscure parts (bird house) so i couldn't just export pads etc. I figured out method to first use sub object shape binder to face and used it to create Shape2D View.
Glad you enjoyed. You be glad to know that I've the last week out two I have been working with people and businesses regarding laser and plasma cut workflow so there is going to be a number of videos covering unwrapping and preparing objects for 2D output. I have a get together with one business today.
is it possible to dimension them in sketcher?
Thanks - very helpful. This works well when each view (left, top, etc) completely hides all other sides. However, I am trying to use this approach to laser cut outlines for a box with butt joints. Here the edge of another side is visible and so is copied across in the "Shape 2d View" - but should not form a part of that side. I guess I'll have to try something else?
Thanks, yeh I forgot a really important part to include in this video. If you look on the data tab you can change the projection mode from solid to individual faces. That will help in your project. Sorry about that.
@@MangoJellySolutions That's brilliant! Didn't know about that. Thanks again.
Hello, very useful and clear video. I followed your instructions step but step, but I get an empty dxf file. I even downloaded the 0.20 freead version to make sure I had the latest stuff. Any clue why I am getting an empty drawing?
I also get empty dxf fines when I export.
Doesn't seem to work for me in Visio 2021. I export the Shape2DView to DXF (AutoCAD DFX 2D), then try to import into Visio and get the message "Cannot open file. The file may n ot be a DWG or DXF...". It is not clear what a "Pocket005" means in this context.
Hi , Darren . Another great video . I'm a little off topic here . I see you built a CNC router . how well does it work for you ? I am building a MPCNC router should have it done in about a month . Have you made much with it ? Have a great day my friend , Stay Safe .
Best regards
Terry Lembke
Hi Terry, I have to say it's been a bit of a unfinished project, I had so many problems around the controller cnc v4 nano board which I am surprised that it's even on sale it's so bad. There are so many issues with it including the micro stepping is not even wired up. I did get it to work but my motors are way to under powered. I was able to cut some work jigs and some pockets for the CNC control board to fit into. Then I went back to it and the board had decided to then cut at 5mm steps rather than 1mm. Which even after a reflash of the board it still didn't cut correctly. I changed the board and everything was back to normal. I still have to finish it but its a bit of a noisy machine as I used reclaimed perspex which vibrates way to much. I have a lot to change but it was a great experience as I knew zero about CNC machines at the time. This channel was going to be about my CNC diary but I ended up getting absorbed into the modelling as I got back into CAD after a few years of leaving the scene. I wouldn't let my experience put you off. I made a lot of bad choices but I don't regret it. I really need to finish it and only recently I was thinking about a rebuild. I did everything on the cheap, lots of reclaimed material and some of it so old that it disintegrated when I first turned on the machine! It scared the hell out of me lol.
@@MangoJellySolutions Hi , Darren this is the control board that i am going to use . This board was recommended to me by one of my dear friends . who has several of them and has great success with them . this is a 5 axis breakout board . that goes from your parallel port . it. was about 20.00 dollars . I am going to use linux cnc same as my friend , look it up . if you have problems finding it I will help you get one . My buddys channel is ask jerry everyone else does . great guy . hope this helps . Can I contact you through your resale shop ?? Let me know . Have a good one .

@@terrylembke8100 Hi I realised this is the message I missed, sorry about that. My email is mangojellysolutions@gmail.com
I have a piece that I need to send to a waterjet company. I could go about it the same way??
Me too! Fillets and Pockets seem to make the DXF odd looking as well. Worried about those being a problem.
Hi , Darren . Did you get that info i sent you ? Hope your having a great day ?
Terry
Hi, no sorry haven't got anything as of yet.
