In this video I teach you how to import STEP files to FreeCAD from another CAD package such as Fusion 360 or SolidWorks. I also show you how to scale these imported models should you want to customize them for your own projects.

Using FreeCAD for 2 years now, and you just show me I'm using it wrong. One of the best tutorial on youtube btw. Looking forward for the next video.

As others said, an assembly tutorial explaining how to relate each part would be wonderful. After seeing this video and how step files loose all the skechs, won't touch Fusion 360 if I want a "free" tool.

Mate!! Your tutorials are awesome! I ditched proprietary software and went to Zorin Linux and Freecad/Blender, your presentation flow is really helping with the transition to FreeCad.

I watched your playlist, saved it for future reference, and fired into free Cad with a new determination to succeed.
I have almost finished my first can creation, a rolling box for my partner so theres no bits of baccy and green littering every available horizontal surface! I know theres plenty of such boxes on thingy but it a learning experience and chance to make something bigger, better, faster...
It is parametric, not only does it change the size of the box in all 3 dimensions with built in limits, but it also automatically arranges the bits inside to hold a lighter, papers, roaches, grinder etc depending on the size, can change the size of the lip round the top, and it also resizes the lid to suit.
I have a tolerance parameter so if the sliding lid is too tight/ lose, you can change the tolerances and have the whole thing recalculated..
There is NO WAY, I was going to get this software to click in my head until I came across your video's, and now its all starting to fall into place in just 24 hours or so. Still whole pile to learn, but I have created something I had absolutely no chance of creating in Tinker!

Just found your channel yesterday and I have been trying to use freecad over tinkercad for the last year. gave up many time's, not understanding how to use constraints and why I needed them or what they are meant for. Thank you for the video's I now created what I felt was going to be a challenging part with quite a bit of ease!! Thanks man.

Nice video, and great looking model. I’d love to see a video from you on assemblies. I feel like I have a decent grasp on modeling in FreeCAD, but assemblies are a different thing altogether. I suppose it doesn’t help that there are three competing assembly workbenches in FreeCAD.

Great tutorials! Thanks for sharing with maker community. How can I easily modify dimensions of a shaft in a STEP file using FreeCAD? In Fusion 360, this is a simple operation using push/pull tool. In FreeCAD, are boolean operations the only way?
Another excellent video. Thank you. One question - your audio seems low when compared to the ads that play, or to other videos. I’m not sure if that is an easy thing to increase, or not.
Thanks for the feedback John, I will look into it. Ads typically play a bit louder by default, it's a cheeky tactic by TH-cam you get your attention!
@@thehardwareguy Your videos are quieter than most others as well, so turning the volume up to what would be a normal level makes the ads and other videos *extremely* loud. I'd suggest raising your gain a bit in the videos.
Outside of that, I want to thank you for showing the value of using a part to contain multiple bodies (in this and your previous video). The orientation correction (from an imported STEP) alone is worth it. Up until this point, I've done hundreds of models and more than a few assemblies (using Assembly2 and A2Plus) over the years, and I always started with a body instead of a part.

Is there any macro or should be easy to make steps as a macro to speed up the process to import many STEPs files from F360?
I guess the video about the post-import actions is still pending, right? After this, I only found 2 for gears...
Anyone else having an issue with getting a 0.1 tolerance value? My Freecad is defaulted to 1 and wont go lower?
I really struggle with this.. I have a very simple step file (Poker coins v1.step) and I want to modify the object so that on one face I can create a slope and then add text to that slope face. I have gone through your tutorial a half dozen times and I can't seem to make it work for me at all. I just want to modify one face of the coin holder but it seems impossible to do..

Is the motor on the right side (at 9:44, for example) in the base backwards? I really like this series and I downloaded FreeCAD but my Mac won't let me open it because it can't verify it's origin.
Hi! the orientation is correct, for this test rig each motor has its own driveshaft so they are independent of one-another! You can easily fix that Mac issue too, try to open FreeCAD, then go to System Preferences - > Security, at the bottom of the menu you should see "Open anyway". This will let you run software from "unknown developers" on a Mac :)
@@thehardwareguy Thanks! I always forget about that since they udated security setting a couple of versions of OSX ago. It looked like the axle stuck out the same as the one on the other side of the base, but at one point you moved the assembly out of the way and the coupler to the drive hub remained in place and I didn't see a shaft coming from the engine on that side, so I was confused. Admittedly, I've never used motors that the whole motor spun like that before. Thanks for the reply.
How can anyone expect to 3D print an engine with all parts together at the same time when they can only print one part at a time? I mean you can print multiple parts at once separately, but it would be impossible to print a fully assembled piece of machinery

So everything was cool but then like everyone that does CAD or any computer programs trainer speeds up. Trainers forget they are selecting new menu items way too fast for a lot of people to follow.
It's such a shame that it's impossible to just scale a solid with values like any slicer can easily do. But I guess FreeCAD is still an unfinished and rough piece of software. I find it easier to scale a solid and then reimport the STL as a mesh and then make a solid out of it again instead of going through all this work.
I don’t understand why you chose to use a complicated design for a basic FreeCAD tutorial. Otherwise I love watching and learning from your videos.
