It's more likely that Simon was a member of the freemen., and lived in Jerusalem. If he had traveled from Africa he would have his hands full with traveling supplies and his sons with him. Mark said he " came out from the fields. So he probably worked nights as a shepherd or farmer. If that was the case, the Roman soldiers would have known or recognized him.
