I was not on a desert island, but I came to faith in solitary confinement in prison. I did not know the original languages. I was not brought up in the church, but I saw the gifts clearly in Scripture and began to speak in tongues myself. Later, I tried to reject this, but I have been convinced once again from Scripture that these are for today.

I refuse to believe that tongues that I speak when praying to the Lord is gibberish, I know that I know that I know I am speaking to our Father. Call me crazy if you want to.. I run out of things to pray, especially when I am living in compromise.. I sound like a broken record, asking for “relational forgiveness” over and over; as well as sometimes I tell people that I will pray for them and I forget to.. but I guarantee the Spirit didn’t forget when I pray a short prayer in tongues !! I will use tongues until the day I go and be with the Lord. Thank you for this message Dr brown

It's interesting that the position of so many of the critics boils down to "If it ain't coming out of my chimney, it ain't smoke." They judge the validity of the gift based on their experience (or lack thereof) rather than judge it by the promise and proclamation of Scripture. What could we receive from the good hand of God if we simply believed that He meant what He said?

I just wanted to tell you that there are two different ways to speak in tongues. One where it's a prayer language like you heard the 120 speaking and everyone thought they were drunk and they were speaking in many different languages. That other nations heard their language being spoken praising God. This is a prayer language where we speak To God. There is no need for interpretation then there's The gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues . It is here that When a person gives a mess in tongues or needs to be someone there who has a gift of interpretation to interpret it. I hope you listen to Michael Brown explanation here

1 Corinthians 14:2 (NLT) For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.
Tongues is a multi fold gift. Paul generalizes the gift in 1 Corinthians. It’s seems that he is talking about tongues being used in more than one way. I believe this is one those subjects that he goes more in depth in person.
Only a tongue message from God to the church (public) requires interpretation:
1 Corinthians 14:27-28 (NLT) 27 No more than two or three should speak in tongues. They must speak one at a time, and someone must interpret what they say. 28 But if no one is present who can interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak in tongues to God privately.
Tongues used for praise and prayer (private/personal) does not require interpretation, but we should pray for it. This “type” shouldn’t be spoken out loud to disrupt the service or cause confusion:
1 Corinthians 14:4 (NLT) A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
1 Corinthians 14:13-15 (NLT) 13 So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said. 14 For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying. 15 Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.

I have never 'spoken in tongues,' and I've had powerful experiences with the Lord in prayer. However, I believe it (tongues) can happen if the Lord wills it to happen for other people. To me, it doesn't matter what comes forth in the flesh, so much as what's in the Spirit, in your mind, that matters, whether in *total silence* or spoken in tongues. I'd not think either is superior or inferior, only different, and to be used for different people at different times for different reasons. 🙂
Another interesting consideration is Romans 8:26. Paul writes that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in groanings that cannot be expressed in words, which could be happening when you speak in tongues?

Dr. Brown with all due respect. I feel it’s important to correct your understanding of Acts 10. Verse 45 says that those of the circumcision were astonished! (These had come with Peter.) Since Cornelius is a Roman, it’s not unreasonable to think that there was people of multiple languages in their company. And as this was the sign to the Jews that the spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles. Which fulfilled the vision Peter had at the beginning of the chapter. This is why Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:22 says tongues are for a sign not for those that believe, but for those who believe not. (The Jews that didn’t believe Gods spirit could be poured out on Gentiles).
Not to be abrasive but the scripture really couldn’t be more clear that the tounges were known languages. 1 Corinthians 14 is clearly a rebuke because they were obviously doing something that probably resembled what goes on today in the charismatic movement.
“And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14‬:‭7‬-‭10‬
It doesn’t take much discernment to see that Paul’s telling them that anything with a voice makes sense to someone.
“If the trumpet gives an uncertain sound how can I prepare for battle”
For any scripture that you can point to, to Further your argument can easily be explained as known languages.
I tell you all this out of love. I respect all of Gods creation. I’m not a cessationist. I believe God can do what he wants.
But what’s interesting is, I know 100’s of people who speak in tongues. But I’ve never met one person with the Gift of healing. It seems to me that if God was gonna pour out one particular gift on his people. The gift of healing, or prophecy, or wisdom would be much more beneficial to the advancement of the kingdom.
“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭7‬ ‭
Notice how the Lord says the heathen pray that way.
If you read the beginning of 1 Corinthians 12, concerning spiritual gifts that gentiles are easily lead away by dumb idols.
I do not want to be argumentative but I feel it’s very important to right divide the Word of truth.

You had me up until, "birthing" things in the Spirit. The videos I have seen of people doing this are nothing short of terrifying and definitely not exhibiting the spiritual gift of self-control. If, as you say, the Word is supreme...can you show me one place where it clearly says in Scripture that somebody was birthing something in the Spirit, and that it was as violent and boisterous as a natural birth can be apart from anesthesia? As far as I can tell, you are taking metaphoric phrases from Paul and making them into a theology. I am most certainly a cessationist when it comes to the office of apostle, but I am open to the real gift of tongues, which not every Christian will have even if they ask. That was not mentioned in this video and I think it's an important biblical point.

Umm tongues for the unbeliever is literally what happened at Pentecost. They heard them speaking in their natives tongues the wonderful works of God. It was a miracle of speaking and a miracle of understanding. Those unbelievers who understood were convinced of the power and presence of God. Then afterwards Peter spoke the gospel and 3,000 were saved. There are different varieties of tongues. Tongues as a sign to unbelievers which is a known language on the earth. Tongues used in body of Christ. This is a message from God to us and comes with an interpretation. Then there is the private tongue or prayer which is from our spirit to God. It’s not meant to be understood because it is a heavenly language which no one on the earth can understand. It’s to be used privately and not in a church setting. The issue is that there’s no way to tell the difference between them unless there is an interpretation. If there’s no interpretation then it wasn’t the gift of tongues, it was the private tongue. Paul was giving them freedom to speak in tongues but also order in how to properly communicate in a church setting. Speak out in faith but be quiet if there is no interpretation.

Paul said in 1 Cor. 14 that "...I WILL pray in the Spirit, I WILL pray with the understanding..." Just like you can pray in your understanding at will, once you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and received that gift of tongues, then you can pray it any time you want, just like when you pray in English (or your native language) any time you want. Paul also said in 1 Cor. 14, "If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God." If tongues were out of your control you would not be able to follow Paul's instructions here. So again, once you are baptized in the Holy Spirit and have the ability to speak in tongues, you can yield to them any time you want. You have full control of it. Remember Dr Brown saying he prayed 5 mins, then 10 minutes, and got to where he prayed an hour a day. That was under his control. You can pray as much or as little as you want.

I have never really struggled with speaking in tongues (however I struggle with how irrational it seems). There are people in church who have like two syllables let's say "do" and "bee" and they like do SOS with just these two syllables... is this tongues.... ?? I usually stay away from saying something is not of the Spirit unless I have direct Biblical evidence to the contrary. I guess my advice is to have fun with it. While driving alone just start making up gibberish and get used to the patterns it makes. If you think to yourself, "I have never used a 'w' sound... then add a w sound... if you ?sense? it was wrong somehow then don't use it... For instance we are told to read, know, and understand the Bible. The Holy Spirit strings bible verses together in our minds and hearts into guidance... instead of bible verses you're stringing together syllables. At first just make paths of gibberish like someone who doesn't know how to play piano etc... do certain syllables give you different feedback like music? And then before too long you aren't even thinking about the patterns most of the time. You are focused more on the song than the notes. You're moving through the forest and no longer categorizing trees.

This wasn't a very good explanation it was more about his personal experience & feelings rather than scriptural descriptions his hypothetical scenario of speaking tongues in a foreign language amongst a group that all spoke the same language would serve no purpose because no one in that group would be able to understand anyway highlights what Paul said if there no one to interpret let him be silent also would speaking in gibberish be any better as if those present can differentiate between a foreign language or gibberish.him calling it a moot point is itself a moot point

@@RJ-vq1iv I go to a church that believes that the baptism of the Holy Ghost comes with the evidence of speaking in tongues, but in my reading of Scripture I've not found it written that way.
"1 Corinthians 12:29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?"
I believe the scripture says the baptism of the Holy Ghost/Spirit comes when a person is born again.
"Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."
The true evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost is told in , "1 Corinthians 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way." And chapter 13 tells us the excellent way. Charity ( LOVE)
"Matthew 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;"
This love can only come through the baptism of the Holy Ghost. And that is the True Evidence.

Dr. Michael Brown says at 11:35 that "In my mind, I can be talking to God about one thing, and while speaking in tongues, it was coming from a different part of my being." I don't see how this squares with 1 Corinthians 14:15 which says "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." In the context, which I recommend you look at, Paul is not advocating praying with your mind while your mouth makes unintelligible gibberish. I know this, because Paul concludes by saying "yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue." So all the modern-gibberish-tongues in the world (which is not the biblical gift of tongues) is not worth 5 words of actual words spoken with understanding.

Yea, thats Pauls entire point. Brown doesnt disagree, its his entire point. Thats why Paul says tongues only edifies the inidividual and prophecy is better because it edifies people around you. Paul would rather speak 5 telligable words people can understand while in PUBLIC, than speaking his angel language tongue that he does in private more than any of them. Pauls entire rebuke was that they were doing it too much in public, and that for the public, they need to focus on things that edify the public, not just the individual. So how is Paul saying its wrong? Hes saying its good. But only for the edifying of the individual. Do you see Brown up here speaking in tongues? No. Because Brown is obeying Pauls counsel. If he werent, then Brown would be making videos speaking unknown tongue. Paul says he will do both, but he doesnt say he'll do both in the church! Youre adding whats not there! I suggest the context of scripture, not your beliefs.

‘Tongues’ (read, *‘languages’* ) - the divine gift, is the God/Holy Spirit given ability to effortlessly learn to speak and be understood through real-language barriers. It is not xenoglossy (as many people incorrectly assume), nor is it the self-created non-cognitive non-language utterance of what certain Christian denominations are producing today (modern tongues-speech).
The “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with.
It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. The "nail in the coffin", so-to-speak, is that _any and all_ phonological rules (rules governing how sounds are put together in a given language - what is allowed and what is disallowed) governing a speaker's native language, will _also_ govern their tongues-speech. That fact alone negates anything that can be construed as 'divine' in nature and cements that fact that it is a self-created phenomenon. Further, this subset of phonemes mentioned above typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically.
Occasionally some speakers will use two or more subsets of phonemes to generate glossolalia, producing what, to them, sounds like two (or more) distinct “tongues languages”, thus claiming to be able to speak in “divers tongues”.
There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot be explained in relatively simple linguistic terms.
Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely _no_ Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. _Nowhere_ in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced.
“Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will.

An anecdotal observation in 47 years as a believer (saved and then discipled in a charismatic tradition): almost without exception I have observed that those who practice the charismatic gifts, particularly tongues, but prophecy as well, are people who have had a history of some kind of substance abuse. I think a clear and plain reading and interpretation of Scripture makes it clear that of course those gifts have ceased. Following the patterns of the Old and New Testament one cannot help but come to the conclusion that the need for and the use of the "sign gifts" is no longer necessary.

Why is speaking in tongues always associated with The Pentecostal church? I felt kind of down when Dr. Brown revealed that he grew up in a Pentecostal church. Doesn’t seem too surprising as he was most likely indoctrinated and he listened to these “tongue speakers” often. You don’t hear of this is other denominations very often like you do in the Pentecostal denomination.
From what I understand there wasn’t much of this since the time of Christ, and then in the early 1900’s there was “The Charismatic” movement including 2 co-founding preachers Charles Parham and William Seymour, and they made the claim that “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” took on a newly defined meaning which became “Speaking in tongues”. Seemed like it really took off from there and diverts from scripture.
Charles Parham then opened The Bethel Bible college and then REALLY started to push this stuff.
Speaking in tongues was a special gift from God so that the Word could be spread to people in multiple languages. I have no doubt.
I have a couple friends that go to a church in a near by city, and they preach that everyone can learn how to do this to “increase your relationship with God and increase the answers to your prayers.”
God is omnipresent and omnipotent. He knows what you’re going to ask for and knows what you are going to say, tomorrow and 50 years from now. Why do you need a special language to communicate with Him?
Everything about this makes my stomach turn. Feels like a bad warning. Maybe the odd person might have had this gift bestowed on them by God, but all in all, I think most people are making it up or their minds are just twisted and they are convincing themselves that they can do this.
Either way it goes away from scripture, and living 2000 years post Christ, and the fact that pretty much every Bible has been translated to every language that is in existence today, why would God need to grant this gift of Tongues which means “Languages” by the way, in the plural.
Doesn’t seem to be a need for it anymore.

    • @YehudaHalevi247
      @YehudaHalevi247 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The gift of tongues and prophecy never left the church. The early church fathers wrote about it. St. Augustine spoke in tongues. Other saints in history were known to speak in tongues and prophesy. There are accounts during the reformation and the great awakenings. William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army spoke in tongues. There are accounts from the Cane Ridge and Welsh revivals.
Why the explosion in the 1900s? I reason, I believe people were desiring more of God. In the early 1900s people weren’t seeking gift. They were seeking for encounters with the gift-giver.

i have no evidence for my theory i dont know if it exists either. but when referencing speaking in tongues in 1 Corinthians 14 so much of what paul talks about could be taken as speaking philosophically or just deep spiritual truths that edify the person but if they can't fully explain it to someone. When Jesus spoke a lot of times people couldn't understand anything he said it would sound like gibberish/hard sayings they dont understand and therefore he would then have to explain even further what it meant. we could be speaking the same language but be speaking different tongues. is reciting the Our Father not heavenly speech? you can pray the Our Father and your spirit is lifted up but your mind may not understand what you are saying. again i have no evidence for this but its just a thought.

Forms of ecstatic speech, similar to what some might call "gibberish babbling," have been found in various pagan religions throughout history, such as the frenzied rituals of the Dionysian rites in ancient Greece, shamanistic practices, and tribal ceremonies in Africa, where individuals entered trance-like states and produced unintelligible sounds. This demonic act has made its way into the Christian church sadly, and is not from God. The scripture is clear that we ought to pray with our understanding, and not to make utterances that have no meaning, 1 Corinthians 14:15 "I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."
