Great vlog, thanks for posting and sharing.I had a 25 horse Chrysler that had to have the points semi cleaned every time I put the boat on the water.I kept a 3/4 inch boxed in wrench on the boat.The fuel vapors would work their way up under the flywheel.I’d take the housing off, take the flywheel off,and pull a very clean piece of cloth thru the points.Reassemble,and fire that baby up and away!!!
Nothing like that is made today. Very nice work. Much respect you are giving to those who made that new. I wonder if this much attention to detail was given to all our tasks the world would reflect it.

I have the same motor, that is a future project. It runs great, and have everything to restore it including the decals. Thank you for your tips on the decals, I will try it, as there just a pain, from past motors I have done.... two TD-15's and a TD-20, and a couple of the old green Mercurys.

We had 12 foot Glastron w/ a 10hp Johnson back in 64' that my brother put duel wet expansion-chambers on. Sounded great, ran fantastic. Lake cops towed it away. Meanwhile, the lake is full of big-block boats with the same exhaust systems. Too far ahead of his time I guess. Thanks for the video.
I have a td 20 where in the hell do I get a coil for it. And what was the colors u used I see ppg products. Going to use water slide decals I found mine someone was tossing it in to the public land fill I saved it stand included but missing the recoil sucks. Ps they look nice grate vedio.

I just got a Johnson seahorse serial number 478-731 model number ts20 not sure what the year is I believe it's from the 1940s or later this is the silver version which I believe was built in the world war II era but I could be wrong thought that I could get some help from you with knowing what the year is, or I could find a manual, and where am I be able to get replacements parts and I'm also looking for a motor cover for it. Thanks for any help that you can give to help me in my restoration.
Thanks for the info, hope I'm not buggin too much. The Mod is HD20 (I think it's a 2.5hp), I just checked yesterday. I guy I bought it from was mistaken, and I didn't know what I was buying. I just thought the motor looked cool. I checked for spark, and the lower cylinder didn't have any. The coil connected to the lower cylinder didn't have any resistance readings, but the other one had a ~2.5 kohms (Not sure if units are correct) reading.
Nice work...I have watched this video a dozen times...looking for any clues I may find. I have a '51 TN-27 that I got with my jon boat. I have gotten it running and installed a new impeller (18-3001) that I modified. She's pumping water but will not stay running long. I have cleaned the carb, but my question is "where did you get your gasket kit, or a total carb kit. I think mine is missing a few parts from previous owners. Also noticed my gas line was not correct and my carb linkage was backwards. I have searched near and far, purchased a part manual, and still no luck. Any advice would be much appreciated. Any magneto parts too! Your the man. Thanks

Vickie Sollars Not really generally l would say just take your time and study it you can figure it out eventually it’s been a while since I’ve taken one apart just start taking screws and bolts out till it comes apart

Ive got a 70's model evinrude 7.5hp i want restored me and my dad started it together but he isnt able anymore. Wish i could see what you could do with it! i always thought it could be a work of art
I have an old HD25 set aside to restore some day but I think it needs new rings. It runs but gets weak after a couple of minutes, then slows down gradually to a stop. It seems to have very low compression. Not sure if I can find new rings for it!
Did your TH26 have a water pump impeller cooling system? I have a HD20 and I was wanting to replace the impeller, but I don't think it has one to replace.
Not sure what the HD20 has but the TN26 has an impeller inside the lower unit and the direct drive TD20's have a wobbler style water pump located behind the prop.
looks good,, I restore motors also,, I use imron on allot of my motors and it works great and holds up nice,, flows out good and has great gloss,, on motors I have to clear over decals I use sickens high solids clear,, its an awesome clear to use,, fast dry time and great flow out,, both paints are expensive but I guess you get what you pay for,, I am looking for an old 15 merc from early 60s to do for a personal motor,, keep up the good work,, we need to save as many of these old motors as we can from the scrap pile,, its part of American history,,
Hey bigdmc, I watch this channel over and over while Im working on my 51' tn 27, where do you get your piston rings from or what ringsets are you using. And is the tank steel or aluminum I havent stripped my yet, but I plan on opening my tank up and gettin it back straight. Another question that popped into my mind is are the 5.5 and 6 hp pistons from the cd engines the same as the tn pistons or did johnson increase the bore size. I only have one engine and online searches are really providing little info or none on the forums and most parts searches are only going to 55 or 68.
Fishng Trips For Charity I really don’t change the rings on those old Johnson’s they seem to be in good shape if it needs rings then it’s too far gone I don’t rebuild them however I’m sure if you search long enough you could find rings for those as far as the tank is concerned it is aluminum some people have had success filling it with water and freezing it to get the dents out but I chose just to fill it in with body filler as I was afraid I would damage the tank if I tried to freeze water in it
bigdmc1 thanks for the reply im going thru mine now the weather has warmed up i just disassembled the top end i found that the points cam is crack right along the keyway 😣 gonna be fun trying to find that one, carbs gotta be completely done, coils were shot, those i can still get, next im gonna pull my lower unit, thanks for the tip about freezing it i might try that but i may have to cut this one and tig it back together its really rough and gonna need to be massaged, i see its aluminum now. I need to know. Is there a gasket on the float needle or is the seal metal on metal? I have a 46 TD-20 that hasn't run in over 50 years and I'm having a major float seal problem. I open the fuel petcock and the bowl overflows. I've disassembled the carburetor and cleaned it and reassembled it to how it was.

I have a 1946-1950 Johnson Seahorse 2.5 hp HD25 that leaks gas from the carb so need a carb kit. Any idea where I can get one? I've checked all my local marinas here in Wisconsin and so far no success.
So i took my 1950 5hp out.... and I had a little gasoline leak. but i hit the carb and i get the flot to moving... this is a new float two... My air screw seams to be cuting off the air after a few minutes, do you have any ideas on that. Gas cap air screw? Also my neutral is not working. Im thinking the cable could be loose. Do you have any suggestions on that as well. I love this motor. I bought the handle you recommended...

Your dedication to detail is at par with mine. I believe you are a bit too hard on yourself with the air bubbles in the sag area of the finish. That could be an acceptable factory finish any day of the week. I own two model T's and can tell you up front when something is over restored. Your air bubbles ARE factory and period correct. A faster reducer in your paint or hotter weathershould cure that issue.
I made some. it took a couple of attempts... the trick was using a weak metal... So I broke open a diabetic thing that sticks your finger. Inside of it were two springs. A large and a small. I used the metal out of the large. Now for the bad. It works almost perfectly... But, when ever i run the motor slowly, the fingers are clicking out and making nose. So that is an issue for me...
Where would you find a float and the leather seals in the primer plunger thing in this day and age? Just picked one up today and it needs those and a few other things.. Thanks, cool video and awesome work.

Yes I replaced the water pump and yes you can fill dents with bondo just make sure to take it to bare metal and scuff it up good

Not much. sadly. No young people are interested in old motors, and the old men that were interested in them are dying off....
I'm 17 and just got a TN 28 seahorse 5hp. I wanna buy a few more old motors and fix them ! I have found out I love fixing motors and boats too !
