Oscar Wilde was certainly a brilliant writer. The fact that "art imitates life" can indeed be applied to this book. The tragedy is that you can write any sort of fictional character, but you cannot confuse art and reality. He tried to live the life of Dorian Gray; however, not living in a fictional world, he overlooked the fact that he would age and that actions have consequences, and you cannot write yourself out of them. That was his downfall. He ended up like the living breathing picture of Dorian Gray until the end.
@@stevenash621 Yes, he was arrested because of his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, AKA "Bosie". His main lapse in judgement , which led to his fall from grace and turning the tide of personal opinion, was his overestimation of what his "fame" would cause people to look the other way. Had he been more circumspect, and not lived in such an outré manner, things may have gone very differently. Had his relationship with Bosie not been as public, he would not have made an enemy of Boisie's father, the 9th Marquess of Queensberry, who considered it, not only a breach against his family name, but treated it as some would have done, a hundred years before. He threw down the gauntlet, and challenged Wilde to a duel, *through the courts*. Wilde sued for criminal libel, and was sentenced to hard labor, but he did not die in prison. He was released in 1897 and did not die in prison. He remained in France until his death in Paris, Nov. 30, 1900.
Great book. I love old English. Oscar was a genius. He took great risks and if he were alive in the 21st century he would have been able to just be himself.
this is the best heavy accent-less audiobook i’ve found of this piece but why… are there random sounds in the recording.. i’m trying to fall asleep to this and keep getting scared 😆
I am so enchanted and captured by the voice of Mr. Lane! Thank you for such a wonderful reading. (Do you accept offers and requests by the way? I would like to listen to «Hearts of Three» by Jack London in Mr. Lane's reading much.)
This is an edition from 1891. The "uncensored" edition is based on the 1890 version, but it is more of a cheap marketing gimmick by the publishers. Some homosexual allusions disappear, while this edition is over 1/3 longer, containing more chapters and introducing additional plotlines. It would be more accurate to call it an extended version rather than an uncensored one.
From what i believe, because I bought the uncensored version on Kindle, this is a censored, but extended version of the novel. It's pretty much the same with the only difference of some more explicitly romantic allusions/homosexual dialogue (although the original release did little to hide its queerness). Like the creator told you, originally it was shorter and they added like 4 to 5 chapters more? I forget to count, sorry. The uncensored version was released as "The Picture of Dorian Gray: An Annotated, Uncensored Version" which was published by Oxford in 2011, includes added context notes (obviously) of the story, Oscar Wilde's life and his choices, etc.
This is likely a copy-paste of the introduction and conclusion from another movie sprinkled with a touch of carelessness. Already corrected. Thanks for bringing attention. 😉
"We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless."
that’s the brilliance of his style and why his channel gets so many hits. I’ve listened to him read 1984, Animal Farm, and now this one. and I’ll listen to more. I could listen to his narration for hours. and have. It’s what makes a good audiobook.

Actions have consequences rightfully. Though of things done to him, not one has been imprisoned and forced to a labor camp.
He was arrested for sleeping with men and died in a labor camp. Wtf are you on about.

how is there an ad every 20 seconds oh my god
Great book.
How utterly strange! Closed Caption has the introduction saying “The Picture Of Dorian Gray” by Robert Louis Stevenson! 😳
This is likely a copy-paste of the introduction and conclusion from another movie sprinkled with a touch of carelessness. Already corrected. Thanks for bringing attention. 😉
Ads do intrude :p
Part romance part crime novel all beautiful.
Great book! Well done!

Amazing story
Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said all art is useless?
I don't believe you read the context of that statement, which btw comes from the preface of this very book.
"We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless."
