I buy the green coated tomato cages and cut them in half to put around my peonies for support. Works great, costs less than $10. The green coated ones disappear once the plants starts to grow. You get two supports from each cage.

After your strawberries in a small galvanised container vid I grew strawberry plants with my class (although they really just wanted to watch how to turn them into ice-cream on repeat). They loved it and learned so much, they were ten years old and some only realised it’s the roots that take in water, others were fascinated that the flower centre turned into the fruit,,, We ordered bare roots after Easter and watched what they did until taking them home for Summer hols.

About the Hartley plants drying out quickly and needing extra 2:25 water. I live in the lower desert of California where our summers are typically over 110 for weeks which is not ideal for our homes, carpet, furniture, anything with fabric, plants and pets. We recommend people place 5 gallon buckets of water where you want a bit of moisture and you will be amazed at what the slow release of moisture will do for the area. Probably 1 bucket at either end of the Hartley (just set them and forget ‘em) will suffice and the bucket will be empty at the end of summer depending on the length of the hottest part. Hope it helps!

Just finished the video. I wanted to share my peonies support. I used to set up small garden stakes and jute to create a caged area to support them. This past year I got an old lamp shade from a second hand store, riped off the cloth and spray painted it black. I set it upside down over top where the peonies come up and just monitor and adjust as the growth progresses so that they all come up with in the wire frame. It worked very well. I did anchor with landscaping tacks. Maybe the official supports are cheaper or maybe you don't have to spray paint but it is an idea. Happy Gardening all!

For the kids in the classroom planting beans. They could give each child their own paper cup (or red plastic solo cup) to plant a couple of beans in. That way they can watch the growth for the rest of the school year, and even if they don’t get completely mature in time, the kids can still take them home to finish there.

I did a double take myself when I heard Laura say "No" on hydrangeas blooming in shade ... Live in Florida, and unless it's a panicle variety, generally hydrangeas here only thrive in shady areas! Otherwise they fry in direct sun! In my experience (learning to garden in Northern climates and having to re-learn everything I thought I knew when I moved to heat and humidity) ... When MOST plants say full sun on the tags ... uh, here in FL ... No!

To support my peonies I use sturdy prunings from shrubs & trees (trimmed & cut to usable size,) lashed together (either with twine or wire) to form a simple, rustic 4 sided cage (either for single plants dotted around or one large corral for a grouping.) They look pretty & keep the heavy peony flowers from flopping.

I’m excited to share the Hydrangea I’ve got is good for shade - Monrovia Seaside Seranade Outer Banks, was built for eastern ocean-facing climate with cold and shade. It’s a lace-cap macrophylla all season bloomer.

In the south, we get excited when hydrangeas can take full sun. I’ve always thought of hydrangeas as shade plants and my limelight is doing beautifully in part shade. Lace caps and oak leaf hydrangeas do well in shade. I guess it’s because our days are long and nights are hot. Couldn’t believe it when she said they needed sun. Ours will burn in the sun except for a few varieties. Zone 8 Atlanta

My husband keeps asking me what I'm watching every day on my phone (your videos, I tell him!) You've inspired me to do a lot more spring work sooner, when winter days were mild. It sure makes the spring cleanup paced better and easier, thank you. We were also rated from 6b to 7a with the new USDA plant hardiness zone map (WV). I placed a large order with PW in December, and they still had my zone as 6b so the shipment wasn't scheduled until 4/29. I called them to move it up, so they should now ship the week of 4/15. Can't wait!
Good luck with that rubber mulch. My granddaughter looks like a coal miner when she comes home from daycare, where they have rubber mulch on their playground. My daughter puts her crocs in the dishwasher. 🤣🤣
Silver maples love moisture, and I'm growing cardinal flower this year in my northern, wetter landscape bed.

we planted sunflower seeds in the bottoms of milk cartons (the little cardboard ones we got at lunch) in kindergarten. We took them home the last week of school to plant at home. By the end of summer it was twice as tall as I was. That was one of the first things I can remember that sparked my love of gardening. Even if you can't harvest during the school year it's still very exciting to see things starting to grow and learning about the process.

I don't know why people complicate peonies. You can tie a piece of garden twine around the stems before they leaf out. The twine rides the plants higher and the stalks can support each other. Usually the twine has degraded by the time you need to cut them back in the fall. If it hasn't, just snip and toss.
