    I wrote this in 2005 at a composition summer school, and extended it later that year for a performance at LSO St Luke's. It has been performed several times since, by orchestras in Essex, Nottingham and London. This is the chamber ensemble version from the first performance.
    This piece was inspired by the final scenes of the play Journey's End by R. C. Sherriff. You can hear the calm before the storm, the build up to the battle, and the hymn to the fallen. The hymn is based on John McCrae's poem 'In Flanders Fields' - those who know the poem may be able to sing along.
