That fact that the outside is sprayed with a caustic solution and let sit for a few days to make its appearance far worse than it really is, might have something to do with the ease of how it all came apart ,without to much trouble . To tear down a whole motor with very little lubricante and not strip a nut or snap a bolt is another clue . All internal components look fresh and were still working till a short time ago .The clean water in the sump is a dead give away also. Never the less still great work and a excellent finished product . Job well done !
i totaly suspected that...vinegar & peroxide most likely. It will rust in seconds!

I've always been pretty good at fixing stuff (not sure if I could do this or with as much skill) but my bane was always putting things back together - remembering where everything goes. It's so satisfying to see any broken machine or other thing be fixed/restored. Basically from trash to something useful..
