Look for the bare areas on the bases of the lodgepole pines where the chains and windlasses were attached to the trees to pull up the wagons. They were still there in 1992. the method was that the windlasses (pulleys) were roped to the trees, sometimes a couple of pulleys. Oxen were driven downhill, the ropes thru the pulleys reduced the effort of the oxen and eased the load on them. Then the wagons were chained to a tree and the windlasses were dragged (maybe by the oxen) up the hill to a new set of trees. Oxen were hitched to the ropes, the chains were released, and the process of walking the oxen down hill to pull the wagon up was repeated to the top of Carson Pass.
there is a block of stone with a bronze placard which says that there was a tree with kit carsons carvings 0n it, so they chopped down the tree and put up this block which say there was a tree...
I love how this very sharp Lady keeps checking this ol' Globo! 😆🤣
