The Caldor Fire was a real piece of work, as it got down to South Lake Tahoe and almost made it to the Nevada border. I think it's safe to say that the Spur is the worst section of Hwy 88, in general.
a couple of weeks ago I drove highway 50 from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe, and once you get above 5000 feet it’s almost all bare from that fire until you reach Echo Summit. It’s so sad.
Given how high in elevation CA route 88 goes & the amount of snow it gets, it's crazy to think that CalTrans keeps it open year round. Most likely because it's one of a handful of roads that goes though the Sierra Nevada to enter Nevada- well that & the Kirkwood Mountain Resort which is a popular destination.
I've camped all over the place off of highway 88 for over fifty years. Going back soon🙂
My family gets a whole summer camping spot at Silver Lake every year 😎
Which campground at Silver Lake can you get a whole summer camping spot? That sounds great!
This video and the music were very good together !
Around 8:10 , off to the left (out of frame) there is a fantastic view.
One of the most beautiful trips crossing the Sierra. CALTRANS is very good keeping this road open in Winter, probably because of Kirkwood.

I like how this highway doesn't go down to 1 lane status like CA-4 and CA-120 do
When does 120 go down to one lane? I don’t recall this.
@InterstateKyle I checked Google maps and you're right, it doesn't, but I could've sworn it did over Tioga Pass. Mandela Effect I suppose.
