The Maker Oh, oh deep water, black and cold like the night I stand with arms wide open, I've run a twisted line I'm a stranger in the eyes of the Maker I could not see for the fog in my eyes I could not feel for the fear in my life And from across the great divide, In the distance I saw a light Jean Baptiste's walking to me with the Maker My body is bent and broken by long and dangerous sleep I can't work the fields of Abraham and turn my head away I'm not a stranger in the hands of the Maker Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters Standing there with broken wings I have seen the flaming swords There over east of Eden Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker Oh, river rise from your sleep
The original released version on Dan's "Acadie" holds a special place in my heart. This version, built on those tracks is special too, more so if you know the history of the sessions. You can read the accounts in Dan's book "Soul Mining". These musicians bring us much joy and strength, and I am grateful to know their music.
Love this song, brings me back to my childhood... P.S. the clacking of the sticks represents the walking in the Fields of Abraham by the French Militia back in Quebec...
For me, Daniel Lanois' original version is the definitive one but, of all the covers/collabs this one is fantastic. I only wish I could have heard Johnny Cash do a cover version.
Compared to Daniel Lanois' and Tim/Dave-Matthews' versions, I can't say I like this version. Seems Willie is trying too hard. That, or somebody from above handed Willie & Emmylou this song and said 'make som'n/magic' with it.Just not feelin' it.
The Maker
Oh, oh deep water, black and cold like the night
I stand with arms wide open,
I've run a twisted line
I'm a stranger in the eyes of the Maker
I could not see for the fog in my eyes
I could not feel for the fear in my life
And from across the great divide, In the distance I saw a light
Jean Baptiste's walking to me with the Maker
My body is bent and broken by long and dangerous sleep
I can't work the fields of Abraham and turn my head away
I'm not a stranger in the hands of the Maker
Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters
Standing there with broken wings
I have seen the flaming swords
There over east of Eden
Burning in the eyes of the Maker
Burning in the eyes of the Maker
Burning in the eyes of the Maker
Oh, river rise from your sleep
Awesome song, Willie, Daniel and Emmylou , and the fantastic drummer, who tears it up. Just amazing.
That smile on Willie's face at the end is everything.
That guitar sound is awesome
Willie & Emmylou, and Daniel's amazing song. This is music.
Daniel Lanois genius with Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris is absolutely amazing..!!!!!!

Pure rythm, that touch eternety
