1970. Worked in a menswear shop in Park Road. Used to get terrorised by Palmer and his cronies. Hated the man. Just a bully.
    Beech was a good guy.

Met Gary once many years back. Was introduced to him by my dad (also a big name in the history of Liverpool hard men) what struck me was how much of a gentleman he was. Also the mutual respect both he & my dad had for each other. They don't make them like that anymore. RIP to both my dad & Gary.

Gary was a gent used to come in mum and Dads cafe I was in awe of him because of his reputation used to sit with my Dad and tell his war stories and he could eat like nothing I seen but being a boy of I don't know 13 or 14 he showed me nothing but respect and good manners hes a legend and deserves to be remembered as such RIP

alright bill hope you're well mate, joey was my uncle.for a better representation of our joey you'd have to ask old school heads south and northend,or read the bits about him in sam leaches "the rocking city" amongst other books.john lennon actually goes to hit him for a loan in it haha, was minder to all the stars that came to liverpool.stopped the beatles getting filled in by a gang over in the wirral, unfortunately a hit was done on him with a car in his prime by another bully whose jaw he'd broken for bullying in the club he was on.palmer was meant to have made the call to get him out as he was obsessed with beech.our joey had flattened him in and out the ring, even in the straightener on that ill fated night joey was whacking him till palmer went for his legs(his legs being plates and pins after the hit with the car)and palmer and a gang pushed him over a little wall and jumped all over him.the rest as you know is history, had to specify that as there was some chap talking nonsense on here a few months back who didn't have a clue about our joey.in his prime he was unbeatable hence being run over by a jag then reversed over,i've heard over the years "this one was gonna do that,he was gonna do this to palmer" etc when they've heard joey was my uncle.no one done nothing bill our joey did everyone a favour, but also was an absolute gent and never a bully which is why he got the sentence he did.was in the midst of writing his own book but when he lost his son he ripped it up and pretty much passed with a broken heart, sad when you think what he was before the hit on him.even ask our mutual friend paul harding the respect he had in the southend even in his old age off plod, people etc.there are 2 old school legends who own boxing gyms down there who could give you stories on both, one owns a gym on cockburn he'd give a belter as he was one of our joey's best mates and was there on the night but left half an hour before with my other uncle.but whether he would is up to him mate,i don't like mentioning names bill but one friend(another legend)who has since sadly passed and loved our joey in one of our last chats said "ste he was too fast, too big,too powerful" that was mr tony molloy RIP(i'm sure he wouldn't have minded me mentioning his name as miss our daily chats to this day).we're talking about a 6 foot 3 monster, heavyweight boxing champ who it took a car to beat,in dartmoor at 21 for breaking the main plod in the dingle's jaw with one dig.got five years for that in with all the cockneys hence they all respected him when they came to liverpool and he looked after all of them.(more names i won't mention but you can guess)total gent respected till the end but a bullies worst nightmare as when he went he was as violent as it got.miss him with all my heart mate,me and my father have looked after an awful lot of people in the same scene,i mean not in same breath/league as him like but we learnt off th best.as i say read sam leaches "the rocking city" with the parts on our joey,it rattles off a list of old school serious men then see what it says about our joey at the end.ta bill have a good day my mate and keep it coming

The thing about saying "nowadays people use knives instead of just fighting" is that there was alot more kick offs back in the early 2000s and 90s in the nightclubs than there are today. In fact one of the reasons nightclubs don't even exist anymore ( in Liverpool anyway) is because they had constant kick offs in them. You had to be careful what direction you looked in when in a nightclub. Yes there's more shit house stuff like stabbings in bars these days but objectively there aren't as many constant kick offs like we had back then.
