Oh Daryl, your talk keeps going through my mind. I heard all these phrases before. "All you need to do is ..." or "While you are here ..." suggesting that they could easily do it themselves, diminishing the value of your work. Last dude told me: "I have a tall ladder" and then invited me to climb up 18 ft to reattach a light fixture (I used my own ladder). Four hours total including a second trip to add another set screw and $70 earned?!?! Other's told me one door fell off the hinges and then it was three. Made me late for my next appointment and gave me $20 tip for work that took me four hours instead of the estimated two. Screw them and not again!
I’m getting really tired of people who want something for nothing. I repaired a gate that had pulled away from the block wall it was attached to. Then the customer comes out with some new hardware and wanted me to install it for free. She said something like “since you’re already here and have your tools out…” 🖖🏼
I enjoy your vids, thx. Ive been checking out your vids and past year and a half bulletproof. Only a few people out here worth time. You should def do a vid with Duke, i heard the talk, but want to see it. Was a really good watch, thx
Had a potential client wanting me to build a set of stairs (2 steps) for $50. The lumber alone cost $45!! These customers have no idea what things cost these days. 😂
Yeah that’s why it’s tough out here in Southern California, we have plenty of people doing things for cheap so it hurts the ones that know the true value of the work we do.
@@willcash16 It's become a sad combination of "fake it 'til you make make it" and entitlement mentalities. It seems that as rates go, it's a race to the bottom in every category except taxes, gasoline and groceries.
Another good one for us finishers is we hung the drywall all you need to do is finish it! And they text you and say I need an estimate for a 9 x 13 room. How are we supposed to know if has corner bead, does it have window or door cut outs that need to be wrapped and mudded. Or if the ceiling needs to be done or not and are they 8 foot ceilings or higher. Great information and really like your channel keep up the good work my friend!
Haha, I'll never understand why most people can't finish drywall but seem to think it's so easy that it should be cheap. I had an ex co-worker that owned a drywall finishing business closed his business and got a job because he was getting too many lowball customers.
"ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS"!!!! I always think, if it's so simple why don't you do it instead of taking this time to meet with someone else to do it for you? What they are saying is, I don't want to pay you Good video man, nailed it
Amen no more free estimates!! Electricians, plumbers dont give them, the window guys they charge to come out to measure. MY new method in the last two years most of my estimates are done though text messages. What up Daryl, Not really related but wanted to ask you about the appliance bootcamp you did. Did you have to go somewhere to take the class or was it online?
What's going on Jeremy. I took the online version but they used to have an in-person class that you could take down in North Carolina. What I like about them is that they teach appliance repair but they're focused on you running your own appliance repair business.
Everything's good on my end bro. Life got a little crazy but I'll be back in the next few days then keeping at it for the rest of the year. Thanks for checking in though!
What do you call those Poles that you use to hold the plastic bag up to keep dust from getting out of the room and the plastic bag as well and where do you purchase them
I appreciate feedback. I'll keep it in mind. When I was editing the video I actually turned the mic down a little bit because I thought it was too loud in my headphones so if it's low that's on me.
Oh man, I just did a small backsplash in a powder room for a lady. She chose the tile and the mosaic sheets were a natural stone look with craters and holes in the tile and she complained about it. I was like “lady, you chose the tile.” I’m not responsible for the product YOU chose!!
Lol, I know what you mean. I really do backsplashes anymore because people in my area hardly wanted to pay anything and still wanted extreme precision.
@@DarylTheFINISHER I can see why you’d cut back on them. I love tile, I think I just have to start putting some wording in my contract that I”’m not responsible for the products you choose and whether or not you like them once they are installed.”
I have learned that it's best to treat your clients like you'd treat your grandmother. At the seme time, you have to realize that dementia rates increase the older they get.
Ok so I’m talking on the customers prospective Customers ask for estimates to get the best for the buck Contractors expenses aren’t the customers concerns such as insurance, licensing that’s expected Contractors/handymen have a great way to feel out people such as you just got recommended by a customer you did work for weeks ago now this customer wants the exact same thing done but you pull up to the house and you see 2 Mercedes Benz’s parked in the driveway and a huge boat along the side of the house and automatically your prices go up by 35% this type of mentality goes on all the time Let’s face it even contractors have to pay to have work done at their homes and I’m sure you guys don’t just open your wallets gracefully to whatever quote you get When you’re out shopping for a new car I’m sure you don’t just go to one dealership most of you guys are probably the most big pain in asses to do business with, yeah you Daryl 😂 Yeah a good solution to the paid estimate is telling the customer the estimate will be deducted if I get the job even if you actually charge a few more dollars for the job it’ll put a good taste in the customers mind Bottom line the competition is tougher today than yesterday Still love you big boy👍👍
The differences I see as a contractor: when I pull up to a house that has the Mercedes-Benz in the driveway the house is normally is kept higher standards. My quote would be higher also. I find that people with those houses are happy to pay a little bit more when you take good care of them, and do the proper cleanup. When you have a house it's just a little bit dirty, and the flooring is a little bit old, and they haven't swept in two weeks, usually you can work in that house cheaper. Because when you clean, it'll be way cleaner than it was when you got there. And then if you go too extreme the other way and the house is absolutely disgusting, you make an excuse to not go there and work. Because you don't want to be in that environment.
Man, I appreciate your feedback! I understand when you're coming from and I do think people should get a few estimates. I'm more so talking about the people who get an excessive amount. My wife had a co-worker that had 15 quotes for his roof and still had no clue what to do. It might be more tied to the culture of things being free. They go on home advisor and get a bunch of free quotes. They go on thumbtack and just pick five contractors to get quotes from. Early on I was one of those guys that ran to somebody's house every time I got a phone call. I have people that wanted me to come out and look at broken toilet paper holders or storm doors with bent hinges lol! I don't know how much time and gas I wasted and half of them still didn't get the job done. I definitely get what you're saying about people switching up when they think somebody has money and people having to look out for themselves. We can not be compared to car salesman though! I have to go to them and then almost fight them to get a price 😂. Once again, I always appreciated you.
I like your video bro but I disagree with what you said about pricing, as a customer you're not suppose to pair more because a company has more employee or bigger truck than another. if yes Walmart should be 10x expensive than going shopping to your deli on the corner . More employee suppose to bring more money in the company so doesn't make sense . Pricing should be about the quality that you provide, your reputation the customer service and the materials that you gonna use to compare with another company. your overhead its your problem its not the customer to paie more for a job because you just invest on a new F 150 or brand new tools, this doesn't make sense at all. Best
I appreciate your feedback! Although I understand what you're saying I don't agree. Customers don't have to worry about a company's overhead because they're not going to tell you what it is but they can't operate their business without alll of their expenses being paid for. Believe it or not, sometimes shiny new trucks bring in a different clientele. Whether you go to your local mechanic or to the dealership your car gets fixed. Either way. One charge is way more because they have more expensive equipment, a lounge area with free coffee and TV or a shuttle service to drop you off at home. You're paying for a whole lot of things that have nothing to do with getting your car fixed. I appreciate you though, nothing wrong with having a difference of opinion.
Oh, you mean Earl and them from up the street. That's based off of a guy I met that told me he did what I did and we had a whole conversation about it. Those Poles that go from the countertop to the ceiling or the floor to the ceiling to hold the plastic up the barrier
