honestly favorite scene is when cutty quits and avon still calls him a man regardless, then gives him 15k for the gym. actually insane level of respect
Cutty asked for 10k and Avon gave him 15k. Throwing an extra $5k was the least Avon could do based on Cuttys loyalty.

Slim was always smart enough and juuuuuust loyal enough to survive.
Agreed, *just loyal enough* is a key point. If he had said something to marlo when he witnessed little kevin being dragged, he would have been next on that car ride.
He understood the game and his position. He also saw the game evolving. Knew it was just getting more fierce. He took the best from Avon , Joe and Marlo.
U not giving him enought credit for how smart he was. Id go as far as to say he had one of the smartest mindsets and movements on the show. Could be top 5. Smart enough would have got him where bode was. He was that pawn that made it across the board, who wasnt actually a pawn
Slim was the "smart-ass pawn" Bodie spoke about in the first season. He laid back and soldiered while peepin' game and surviving the entire series. THAT'S being a smart gangster!

The way Slim looked out for Cutty is so good. Opened up too early.
It’s also cool that Cutty wasn’t ok with the blame being placed on Slim and immediately spoke up about it with Avon.

Avon's respect towards Cutty showed class and respect. Something Marlo never had
Barksdale was a killer and dealer but he played the game with some honor

Slim taking out Cheese for Joe will always be my fav scene of the whole series.
As old as this show is, I loved this. Slim NEVER got the respect he deserved. He had something no one else had. Principles and consistency. Never to high, never to low. Always playing the cards he was delt. Never over playing his hand. Consistent.
Slim got the respect he deserved at the end he was sitting at the table as distro

He was on top at the end of the show. He was the kingpin. He played all his cards correctly. The distribution ran thru slim Charles.
Good point. Slim always played the reliable guy, which he was. But he kept it cool unlike WeeBey who was a bit of a hothead. When Slim tells Bodie about little Kevin, gives him shit news but commiserates with him. Imagine WeeBey in that scene, that would be a shitshow.
I had no idea how well respected he was in DC. Great actor, solid dude Gogo legend in DC.
Always loved when Slim says "he was a man in his time" and Avon looks like he's somewhat still processing what Cuddy had just said about the game not in him anymore and replying with "he a man today...he a man."
One of the best scenes in a series chock full of phenomenal scenes and performances.

Because it takes some serious work to get them to look like they did when they were alive, especially when ypu die in a violent manner. I had a friend who was Bodies complexion, when we had his funeral he was Omar's complexion. Understand now.

Slim was easily my top 3 wire character.
From raising his hand to speak, to talking directly to the connect. Slim was the pawn that became the King.
Slim was hands down the most underrated character on the show and also one of my top 3 favorites, I always love how he stood tall against Marlo in the meeting "nah I'm good where I am" like I'm not falling for your split the group bullshit, Slim respected the game and knew his place and purpose, a real one

I love how much respect Marlo had for Slim, even though they were at war at one point. Outside of Chris and Avon, the only one Marlo ever showed any respect towards was Slim Charles ..he basically offered a top slot to Slim after Joe died, but Slim was too smart. He saw Marlo was heading for a fall
Marlo doesn't respect anyone, he's a sociopath who only values people who work for him as tools for his own ends. Marlo recognising Slim's usefulness as a henchman isn't respect, it's out of a sense of cold pragmatism. Any 'respect' Marlo may show to anyone, is entirely superficial.

Slim was one of my favorite characters. He was a thinker, he wasn't dominated by his emotions.

When I first saw that scene and Avon walked at the door listening...I knew he was gonna crush Stringer with his words after seeing what Slim was gonna say first. 😆
What I love is he calls him Boss. Right after Stringer mentions "Who you work for?" As Avon, the real head, stands there listening. Like a manager watching an assistant manager give an order to an employee.
Slim Charles was the only Barksdale hitter that Omar got the drop on and didn't kill when he had the chance to!!

Slim has always been my favorite character on the entire show. His intelligence and his strategic mind are why he didn't up dead or in jail like most of the street characters. He knew when to speak up and when to stay silent and listen. He worked for several different kingpins and always meshed perfectly with the organization. Glad he came out on top at the end.
I know Stringer struggled in Season 2 without his TRUE steppas (Wee Bey, Bird, and Stinkum)

Slim charles speech about the church crown is why hes one of the best characters of any show. He was showing the last gasp of any sense of honor in the game while marlo is the new generation that just wants as much power as quickly as possible.
Slim Charles was probably the most likable side character in the show. He was smart, loyal, treated everyone with respect, and had his principles.

For as smart as Prop Joe was, his intuition failed him more than twice when it came to Marlo. Prop fell right into Marlo's trap, but the way Slim Charles delt with that snake 🐍cheese 🧀 was poetic justice.

One of my few criticisms of "The Wire" is that Slim Charles didn't show up in the first couple of seasons, and it's a testament to Anwan Glover's presence and his easy fit into the show's dynamic that it's easy to delude yourself into thinking Slim was always part of the cast.
Slim really feels like the last of the true old guard. He's vicious and brutal but there is honour to him, a code that is lost among the youngbloods, and one hopes that if the game is still being played in Baltimore, the tall man's still reigning as the former pawn who made it across the board to become queen.
I love seeing how loyal Slim was to every new boss he came up under; following orders to a tee, never really questioning the decision of the higher ups, just putting in consistent work. But when there was no one else to follow, he followed his own heart and popped Cheese off principal for backdooring Joe. He could’ve waited till Cheese came with the 900k and then popped him, but you can tell he had been wanting to do something about that nigga since before Joe got popped, that being the final straw. One of the most solid characters in the entire series.
Slim Charles will always be my favorite in the whole show. He was loyal, sharp, knowledgeable about the street life, and had honor.

i think he did that because he learned from his experience with his nephew d'angelo while in prison. d'angelo wanted nothing to do with the game, but avon kept trying to keep him close, and d'angelo wound up dead.
and that actually ties-in with d'angelo learning from Wallace, who wanted to leave the game during his bout with depression, even though wallace returned of his own accord, wallace's death, might have contributed to d'angelos change of heart.
but wait, theres more....
cuddy, ended up helping kids stay out of the drug trade, which is what d'eangelo was trying to do with wallace.
so its a chain reaction that came full circle with cuddy.

@@normandy2501 i get that, but i think his point is that once war is begun it only ends with victory, destruction, or surrender/terms, and if you have to surrender you want to do it from a position where you pose as much threat as possible, or else they will demand harsher terms or even deny and continue slaughtering. you HAVE to fight at least to a position to surrender from safely. like most places/times in history past, soldiers in the hood often dont get to choose who or what they fight for, they are born into a community and have to basically pledge fealty to whatever warlord happens to be in power atm.

Omar Little is a good character, but personally it's comforting to know "which side" someone represents. which is why Slim Charles is probably the best character on The Wire. excellent example of not mattering which side you're on, just make sure you're good at it to survive!
