      A little late but I remember a tip from an old Good Eats episode that goes with the apple peeler hack. You can use a drill bit like that to core the apple (or pears, which the episode was using) by just using the bit as it was intended to be used. Just on a fruit rather than wood, and with a smaller diameter bit.

    Popcorn Science: What causes corn to pop is a buildup of steam and pressure inside the kernel until it explodes. Conversely, a drier kernel won't pop because it doesn't have enough internal moisture to build up sufficient steam. Soaking your kernels before popping ensures they're properly hydrated, so that with the application of heat, they'll happily explode into the classic movie snack.

    • @GmodPlusWoW
      @GmodPlusWoW 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      With that in mind, if dried kernels were soaked in a flavoured solution before popping, would those kernels absorb the flavour molecules in the solution?

    • @CarlGorn
      @CarlGorn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@GmodPlusWoW Probably not, since flavor molecules are much, much larger than the simple H\o/H of water. If anything, the flavor additives could impede hydration.

    • @GmodPlusWoW
      @GmodPlusWoW 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CarlGorn That's a pity. Though with that said, I wonder if there are any flavour molecules that are small enough to be absorbed by dry kernels in a solution.
      For instance, would glucose and fructose be small enough to be soaked up into a kernel, causing the corn to caramelize in the heat? And if it were possible, would it be any different from kettle corn and caramel corn?

    Re: Popcorn hack... the botanical explanation is that it works because it increases the moisture inside the kernel (like all seeds, it's somewhat breathable and exchanges air and water with the outside world). Soaking them allows more moisture to go into the kernel which is stored in a little pocket in the kernel which when cooked, builds up pressure and explodes, making the popcorn (this is why kernels "expire," they get too dried up so have no steam to explode them)

    Thinly sliced steak on a salt block tastes awesome (don't season first) but then ruins the appearance. One for presentation, one for cooking on. Wet things like sliced strawberries take on some saltiness. Do the strawberry test before the block soaks up the meat juice flavour.

    Barry and Becky: The apple thing reminds me of my grampa! He was very inventive because my family was quite poor when he was young so he always had to get creative when a solution had to be found. He stuck a toilet brush to a long metal rod and clamped the other end into a large drill, then took a bucket full of potatoes and water, held the drill and attachment in and actually peeled large quantities of potatoes! Wouldn't that be a hack to try out? But not in the kitchen - at least I wouldn't recommend it :D
