The "now and then" quote was more or less the last thing John said to Paul when they last spoke on the phone. The song was obviously written before that, but because of it, it apparently struck an emotional chord with Paul when he heard the song, which is why he has always wanted to finish it. I've no issue with him doing that. I'm interested to hear if he (and musically here it obviously is mainly Paul) has done something interesting/fitting with it. If he hasn't, well, I will somehow manage to get on with my life. This, of all the contenders, isn't the end of the world.

This story sounds ike fake to me, It was spread around but not officially. And there is a documentary about Carl Perkins when he talks about the song Old Friends he composed for Paul and how Paul cried. And yet not a single word about this story of John saying that to Paul. If that was true he would have mentioned it. He said only that Linda told him Paul was crying thinking of John But not that John had said that to him before. His last words for Paul was not mentioned. Maybe it is true, but it is quite strange Perkins had not said about it at all. Where did people learned about it? Not from Perkins, not from Linda, not from Paul.

Johns demo pf Now And Then, in my view is not worth all this effort. Had it been discovered during the Get Back sessions then maybe. George's Anthology era rejection should've been enough to put the kibosh on this project. Like Carnival Of Light, any one Beatle can veto a song. That was the Beatles modus operandi. Paul's insistence on releasing N A T flies in the face of the bands pact that all 4 Beatles must be on board for any project. Ringp's reluctance speaks volumes and though the Beatles legacy will endure, Paul's will suffer if the fans see this as a selfish pursuit or even worse, a cash grab. I'm with you John, let it be. Very honest John. I do wonder whether it will turn out that the extent to which this new release is tied to red & blue is purely using those 2 perfect cover photos, and that the name and contents of the compilation will be something very different and bespoke.
I'd hope its contents would be largely tied to those songs that won't appear in the remix campaigns of the main albums, hence making the track list closer to past Masters than the original red and blue albums.

Wow John! You hit the nail on the head. My sentiments exactly
I don't like the de aging of Paul's voice & vocals flown in from a Because outtake. It will be underwhelming at best. And Free As A Bird & Real Love never moved me either. I've always said the songs sound like Paul George & Ringo playing to a cassette of John. They never felt like Beatles songs to me. And lastly we certainly DON'T need new blue & red albums. Cash grab!
Keep up the excellent videos John
And please do more with Pop Goes The 60s

Always a refreshing and honest take on the tendency to exploit unconditional fandom. Both you and Matt Williamson give intelligent and commonsense appraisals. This new song smacks of barrel scraping to me. If you're really objective, it does a disservice to much superior material that was produced while they were actually together.

I hear your criticisms and they are valid, but I think in this one limited case its fair to get Now and Then out there as a bona fide Beatles track. I loved Free as a Bird, and Real Love was good enough, to make we want to hear this one too. Harrison had simply had enough of the anthology project when he vetoed it...

Two things I'd like to say. I didn't hear Paul saying that Now And Then was inspired by what John said to him. I heard him saying, that for him it was special wuth the titel BECAUSE what John said to him the last time.
The other thing I'd like to say is, why all this fuzz before we know what is coming? No one said they gonna put out The Blue and Red albums remixed. People have speculated that they might do, but no one seams to belive it's gonna be those two albums.
Why can't we wait and see? There's no reason to be upset before we know what is coming. It might be just that one song!
    Sorry for my bad english.

Let's have an extended version of the Get Back documentary as Peter Jackson was raring to go on that one. Is there enough Beatle fans NOT wanting that to happen?
If any of the George Harrison shows were filmed, let's have that too, but be aware that Georges' voice was not in good shape as he strained it during the rehearsals. Shea Stadium would be interesting. That would be a real sound mixing job! Oh yes, and the little matter of a review on The McCartney Legacy book from your good self wouldn't go amiss, John!

Come on John!!! Why not wait to hear it first and then decide if it is good or bad? Personally I am excited to hear it - I liked Free as a Bird and Real Love and to finally get the third song from those 90s sessions is exciting to me. I doubt they have de-aged Paul's vocal (probably more like it is Paul's 90s voice), and I am OK with using a "Because" chord in it. Why not!? Red and Blue remixes... I would prefer remix box sets of PPM to RS, but bringing those up to standard in terms of mix is not a bad idea. Love your channel but on this one how about we wait and see... (or wait and hear)! Agree we need all the other solo albums remixed!

It will make no difference to the Beatles legacy and if there are people who want to listen to it then why not? It’s not compulsory to buy it or even listen to it so if you’ve got no interest then just ignore it. When Phil Collins toured with Genesis last year I was doubtful but the fans loved it so why not. Personally I like Now and Then and I think Paul does too as he said in the anthology interviews. He always said he would do it some day and this is that day.

Carl Perkins wrote a song "My Old Friend" for Paul, that says "my old friend, won't you think about me now and then". My opinion, the reunion tracks we got in 1995/96 were a nice way to close the door on the Beatles as a group, and I mistakenly thought that would end all the reunion talk. Even when only one Beatle is left, reporters will be asking him "are you going to get back together with yourself?" lol.

What would John and George say? Well, we can't know for sure, but we can be pretty sure that they would not like the whole idea. George already nixed it back before he died. And John would say he wrote it as a solo song not a Beatles song. So I wish they would come to Paul in a dream and say, "Just Let it Be, Old Friend."

  • @nickbutler3373
    @nickbutler3373 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Great vid and very very valid points. I’m looking forward to the new song unashamedly haha! I was just starting to get into The Beatles in 95 just before FAAB and I was so excited and I’m getting that feeling again, the new songs then sounded so epic to me at 10 years old.
Red and blue albums remixed for me is the laziest release. A compilation on cd and vinyl in a very much streaming world isn’t the greatest idea.
Just wandering how much are these deluxe sets making a profit? I’ve got a funny feeling they’re not doing that well, the let it be deluxe set is still available on Amazon new at £45. Revolver new us £85. Is this a reason why no solo deluxe sets?
I cannot see many people buying a remixed Sometime in New York City or a remixed Extra Texture. I’m certainly not expecting anything interesting in the Harrison estate anymore. There’s so so much potential and it’s being wasted. Maybe they’re waiting for another tree to fall in friar park to make a bookmark for a grand in the next set! The Harrison estate have missed two anniversaries, Bangladesh and Living in material world so the chances of anymore remixes seem slim and I reckon they haven’t made much from All things must pass so they’re heading straight to the Beatles money box. Very sad.

I wholly agree with you John about the issues at the heart of this endeavour. In what sense is this a 'Beatles' release? It involves the voluntary participation of Paul and Ringo (albeit by Ringo from a distance and apparently, as you say, a 'de-aged' Paul vocal), a demo tape by John - produced years after the Beatles broke up - and a fake participation (if at all) by George. Why is such a construct any different than the many solo post-Beatle collaborations between Paul/ Ringo, George/ Ringo, John/ George etc.? None of these were labelled 'Beatles releases'. There will be those who say that many Beatles songs did not involve the participation of all and were still Beatles records, and thats true, but the difference was that during that period all four were legally and voluntary participants in the band. They individually made conscious choices to be wholly or in part involved in songs and releases. That's not the case now. Does anyone really believe that George Harrison would have agreed to this? It is widely accepted is it not that his participation in the Anthology series was driven by money worries on the back of the Hand-Made situation, not for any love of a rehash of a time of his life he had moved on from. I think recent instances of Harrison releases has not exactly respected his legacy and seem more like exploitation and cash-grabs by someone or something (easy to assume it is Olivia and Dhani, but to be fair although endorsing releases, they may not control them or set the construct and pricing of them). The endorsement of this on his behalf feels like the same to me.
For me this is a Paul McCartney release, in collaboration of sorts with Ringo and John. Might be interesting but it's not a Beatles release. One last point - when they are all finally gone, and a home tape of Ringo singing in the bath is found and pasted onto John muttering to himself, George playing the Uke from his sitting room and Paul playing bass from a Wings out-take, and someone clever melds it all together, will this be a Beatles release?

  • @tinostabile3256
    @tinostabile3256 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi John. I wholeheartedly agree with all you said. I think Macca has been acting through his wallet and not his heart. There are clearly two camps MCartney Apple and Lennon and Harrison. Lennon's camp either the help of Ono and Julian and Sean have been respectful of the fans and offering reissues with decent prices. Although Harrisons numerous reissue of All Things must Pass and crazy prices are closer to McCartney and the Beatles. When the music is produced and made from the heart only then is it worthy of release. When a demo needs A.I. and other trickery to see the light of day... well. I respect McCartney as performer bassist and songwriter but all his reissues priced over 200.00 have made my respect of him wane. I hope this does not diminish the Beatles Legscy because not everyone has McCartney money. I am a Beatles fan but enough is enough. Release only when there is something worthy in the vaults.

The Red & Blue album's should be left as they are. With the probable new song (Now and Then) Paul has said before he would like to finish it off. They and Jeff Lynne had to change the whole context of the meaning of the lyric for Free As A Bird which
did make it sound like a Beatles song but Real Love always had the feeling of a John solo track.

I've had to think overnight on your points, John. On the whole I agree with them - including expecting the "song" to be disappointing. But the one defence I can think of, and I expect this thought might have passed Paul McCartney's mind, is: if Paul doesn't release it, it will only happen after he dies - at least this way he has some control over the legacy of The Beatles. Will it help introduce people to The Beatles? I doubt it. Is it the best way to be introduced to The Beatles? No way! Is it even a Beatles song? Not really - but that doesn't prevent commercially interested IP holders of the recording from exploiting it in the future. So in summary - better out than in. We'll all have forgotten it in a few months time, so what is all the fuss about? ;-)

I agree, even 'Free As a Bird' and 'Real Love' were not Beatles songs. John would have kept working on those songs (if he'd found them worthy) and asked for input from the group. And although I love Jeff Lynne's ELO work I don't think he was the right producer for those songs. ELO aped the Beatles, why turn the original into the copy? No we don't need another half-baked compiled by committee song given their stamp of approval.
As for the Red and Blue albums there is a nostalgia factor for some people, those were the first Beatles albums I bought. An expansion isn't a bad idea, I did that with the Rolling Stones "Greatest Hits" album by Abkco adding songs like 'Time Is on My Side', 'Under My Thumb', 'Out of Time', 'Child of the Moon', 'I Don't Know Why', etc.

The Beatles and George Martin were so meticulous in their choices initially of what should be released, and for the most part those choices cannot be bettered. To me, it is cheapening those choices to continually flood the market with remixes that rarely come close to the greatness of the originals. I think mono for the most part is the best way to hear the Beatles in their earlier years. I do concede, though, that the stereo mix of Rubber Soul is worthy of a remix, but preferably just to get a better stereo mix, and not changing the instrumentation and vocals. I really do feel it is now just a money making venture.

The only way to release these is, unfortunately, a new compilation. But the 2014 releases of the Red and Blue albums are definitive and shouldn’t be messed with. The Mono Masters picks up most of the ‘other’ releases. The perfect way to listen to the Beatles is via the original albums, the 2014 vinyl red and blue albums and the mono masters. Maybe an ep with Now & Then, Free As A Bird, Real Love and Christmas Time Is Here Again released for the Christmas market…

Probably not possible for contractual and other various reasons but a Beatles 1971 - 1980 compilation featuring the very best of their solo work would be nice. The trouble is where do you start and how do you cram it onto a double album? An impossible task?

I am pleased Paul and Ringo have finished the song. Maybe George will be proven right when he called the song “rubbish”, let’s see. What I would like them to do is clean up the Hollywood Bowl record. Specifically I would like to hear all of the 64 concert as they played better with more energy than in 65. I think the could do a great job on that one.

I don’t agree fully John - I think we need to hear the song before we judge anything .
I am excited to hear it …. I don’t believe it will hurt their legacy . Of course there will be a degree of negative fanaticism against the whole premise of the song . Let’s wait to hear the song and personally make our own minds up about it .

3:26 I think I hear that on 'Now & Then' - - the harmonies from 'Because' in 1969 dropped in to make 'Now & Then' sound more Beatley. This point is well worth returning to in a current analysis of 'Now & Then'. This video is 3 months old, & this detail can get lost in the shuffle unless your return to it now that we have the song. I haven't heard ANY reviewer pick up on this.

I want to hear something done with the Star Club tapes, people always complain about how terrible the quality of the tape is--Personally I love that it's a crappy noisy bootleg. I guess none of those people have ever heard Velvet Underground bootlegs, but that's another argument. Maybe you guys would like a cleaned-up Star Club.

Honestly the techniques used in the song are nothing new from the Beatles. Taking an old song that was at one point rejected (Wait). Using outtakes from one song from another (A day in the life string used in Revolution 9) And making vocals sounds different than previously recorded (vocals on strawberry fields, or Tomorrow Never Knows) I think the Beatles have always done exactly what they wanted to do, and it doesn’t look like that’s gonna change!

No need to remix “The Red and Blue” album. It’s all marketing/repackaging. To paraphrase Joh. Heaton, all songs are already available anyway in many, many different forms.

    Interesting video John.
I'm inclined to agree with most of what you've said here.
I think had the song been reasonably recorded in the first place and was simply an undiscovered ' gem'..( or not) that would be fair game for release and would be an honest representation of Beatles creativity from that time.
It seems to me that Beatles product is a relentless commercial juggernaut that appears to just run and run, regardless of quality or necessity.
I guess I'm being a bit cynical here, but it's like AI, just because we CAN doesn't necessarily mean that we SHOULD...and very much like AI, this cobbling together of old demos with new vocals ( and /or cut and pasting old ones!) Will probably make for a largely synthetic result in my opinion.
If I'm honest, I thought Real Love and Free as a Bird were just OK songs, and whilst it served as a great project for Jeff Lynne who did a pretty decent job, it was overall musically underwhelming.
In terms of the ' legacy' of the Beatles, I have no doubt that they will continue to prevail in the musical consciousness of successive new generations who will always seek out great music from the past, regardless of on what format or 'mix' they end up listening to..i'd like to think intelligent kids who understand and appreciate the art will be discerning enough to decide for themselves.
As long as we as humans retain our sense of humanity..The Beatles relevance is assured.

I wouldn't mind an outtakes compilation album that includes Free as Bird, Real Love, and Now & Then. Combine that with non-album tracks from the anthology, bonus tracks from Get Back sessions and the abbey road box and you might have something.

I shall reserve judgment on this song until it's actually released! Paul and Ringo haven't actually said that Now and Then is the track in question although I think we can safely say that it is! I personally would love to see a Peter Jackson/Giles Martin remix of the Hamburg Tapes and the Hollywood Bowl recordings, as they would be very worthy releases which I feel sure would delight Beatles fans!

Yes! We absolutely DO! Most likely they will add some additional lyrics.
I don't think we can judge the merits until we hear it.
I frankly loved and really enjoy Real Love and Free As a Bird.
I don't understand why some fans have so much issue with the "manipulation" of recordings.
The Beatles practically invented the practise.

I pretty much agree with you John on all of this. Although the song has a haunting quality, it's also a bit dreary and a dirge. I do think if they had all been on board during the anthology project and "Now and Then" ended up on the 3rd installment. Ok then. But why now???? I mean, George didn't like it. Whatever happened to Paul always saying, "if one of us didn't want to do something we didn't do it"., or, something to that effect??? So, it's ok to overlook now since George is gone? Even though I really enjoyed Free as a Bird and Real Love, are they really Beatle songs? John never intended them to be, and, because he was gone he never signed off on them to be. But, because they got the ok from Yoko, aaaand, the other 3 were alive and did provide input I guess they do pass the test, sort of. I always thought it was just a gimmick to help sell and bring attention to the Anthology project. Something I thought The Beatles were above. The one thing I would want to ask Paul would be, if he was the one who died first, would he have minded the other 3 going in and pulling out some of his old song or songs that he never released, was unfinished, and then put their finishing touches and their ideas into the song and then release it as The Beatles?? Is it really necessary to release this song NOW just because AI can clean up the sound quality that they couldn't THEN?? About the quote, "now and then" , I do recall a story of Paul mentioning how when Carl Perkins was working with him on the Tug or War album Carl had written the song, MY Old Friend which contain the lyrics, "Won't you think of me every now and then", which, I guess, brought tears to Paul's eyes. I don't know if Carl got that quote from Paul or had heard the story about those being John's last words to Paul, or, that it was just pure coincidence that Carl put those lyrics in to that song. Either way, it does seem that even though that saying is somewhat of a common expression amongst old friends, it does seem to have a significance to Paul when thinking about John. Makes me wonder why he never included them in a song of his own.

    i'm with you, John.
Considering the George Martin treatment a Beatle's song received in their heyday was key to a great recording.
3 of the 5 folks that could make this work are dead, so it's going to be a patchwork.
"Free As A Bird" made me cringe when i heard it, and i'm concerned that "Now And Then" is going to be as bad.

I agree with you. “Now And Then” as it stands as a John Lennon demo is somewhat substandard. There are some nice chord changes. But perhaps Lennon never intended this to be a finished piece of music. If he were alive today I wonder if he would be angry with these interpretations of his demos. He didn’t like what George Martin did with “Strawberry Fields” for crying out loud.
If anyone can work magic with this, it’s Paul McCartney. So I’m looking forward to hearing it for that reason.

Their legacy is more than assured..It's simply 1 more song...If one lousy song lessens their legacy, then why didn't one of their subpar singles ( say, " The Ballad of John and Yoko" to this listener) kill said legacy before they broke up? Quick, name Elvis's last single before he died? A real piece of 70's drivel called "Way Down"...Did nothing to damage his legacy......

John, The Beatles camp this year are not marketing to us Boomers like you & me. They are trying to reinvent their legacy for the new generations. The Beatles need a #1 album, both physically & streaming to compete with Taylor Swift. ETC. Can you imagine a new remix of ‘I Am The Walrus’ with the new technology. That would blow everything else out of the water. MR Stickermania
