Italian cinema has a very important place in my heart. It is second to none in my opinion. My favourite director is Antonioni. Thank you for the video

Overall, even accounting for its relative decline since the 1980s, Italian cinema is unmatched in its depth, ambition, diversity, innovation, originality. I could watch Italian movies from different ages for days without ever getting bored.
Personal picks: Antonioni, one of the greatest artists ever; Sergio Leone, the Homer of our times, and Elio Petri, whose "neurology" trilogy is amongst the most original things there are. But the list could go on and on and on.
One missing name from the clip - which is very well made btw - is Marco Ferrari, who knew how to shock with contents and not with easy tricks. His "La Grand Bouffe" hits as hard as a punch in the stomach.

One of my favourite italian films of all times that is missing from this list is we all loved each other so much by ettore scola, a great film with meta cinema elements, an in depth look at italy from the post war era to the 70s and a great story that will get you hooked from the first scene, definitely a good movie for every cinephile who wants to experience italian cinema and also it could be a great entry point for someone who hasn't seen many italian movies

Great video! I've been watching a lot of Italian films recently, some might say I'm an addict, especially to the films made from the 40s through the 70s, and it is my favorite national cinema besides my own (USA). Your video does a great job at giving people an overview of Italian cinema, keeping it easy to understand, while recommending some of the country's best. Your France video does a great job of this too. Looking forward to binging your channel more

I apologize if I chime in to bother, but in the end 70s early 80 there were two major kind of films that were extremely enjoyed by italians and outside ( mostly europe west and east ): the Fantozzi series and Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movies.
Yes I know, things for plebeians, but worth a mention.

    • @kubricklynch
      @kubricklynch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I've seen a couple Spencer/Hill movies and I did mention them in my video on spaghetti westerns. I should check out more from them though.

@@kubricklynch BH-TH films were mostly kid - family oriented, but with underling thematics that were quite dark and gritty. An adult would understand them, but not a kid he would stop at the cartoonish fistfights and funny costumes. Fantozzi is another super funny ( the first two, then it became mainstream and soulless like nowadays productions ) and ruthless critique to all corporate and wagecuck mentality that was spreading in italy in the 70s 80s. I found out later it was deeply enjoyed in the communist block.
When you say the 80s were unkind to italian movies I suggest you to go deep the rabbit hole of BH-TH movies ( their first buddy movie is a western and quite serious and gritty ) and the Paolo Villaggio works ( he is the writer/actor of Fantozzi, but he did other stuff too ).
That was 80s Italy and it was a bit plebeian, but not stupid.
( yes theres plenty of trash in 80s italy, but I'd save those mentioned )
I will watch your video about spaghetti western in the meantime.
      Thanks for answering me

Very good. All inclusions justified, but there are so many exclusions as well. I guess you would need an hour at least to cover it all, but the huge popularity of Toto and Alberto Sordi (the Italian equivalents of the French Fernandel and Louis de Funes) would be worth a mention. More politically oriented directors like Ettore Scola, Elio Petri and especially Franceso Rosi are also a notable absence. It is good to see Mastroianni recognised but Italy has also produced globally important actors like Gian Maria Volonte, Anna Magnani and more recently Toni Servillo. Favourite Italian movies not mentioned: The Battle of Algiers, Il Generale della Rovere, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, Garden of the Finzi-Contini.

Great video overall, I'll allow myself to make just few marginal consideration:
1- there were more political movies in the 70s (you rightfully showed Gian Maria Volonté as one of those transitioning from western to other genres)
2- from 70s through the 80s the italian b-movies had a lot of influence (i mean A LOT)
Btw, i very much enjoy your guides and find every time some hidden gems

My favourite Italian movies are: Endgame ( Bronx Lotta Finale), Conquest, and Zombi 2. So cheesy and awesome. Endgame is my favourite Mad Max rip-off, it's amazing: dystopian game show, mutants, ensemble cast of wacky action heroes, blind mutant cultists who use a captured psychic as their eyes, insane action scenes, it's just great. Zombi 2 has real tiger shark fighting a zombie (the trainer of the shark) while a topless big titty hottie swims around.

As an italian i tell you most of our old movies are true marsterpieces, nowadays instead we just make stupid and unfunny movies made for the Boomers and that peapole watch one day and compleatley forget about in a week, even Quentin Tarantino who is a big Fan of Italian cinema said that we lost our amazing talent at making movies. Sadly the great filmakes we once had like Dario Argento & Sergio Leone either died or they don't make films anymore. Only a fiew italian movies that come out nowadays are good like A Classic Horror Story, Ultima Notte d’amore, C’è Ancora Domani & some of Matteo Garrone’s movies. Most of new ones are only shitty Commedies that are baerly funny, They just make cheap movies that nobody gives a damn about, partly just to make money and partly because they have nothing better to do all day. 😔😔

Well, based on the size of the country, very small, (italy) and the general economic availability of the country, very small, italian cinema in proportion is the best in the world. the united states has unlimited funding, if only italian directors had it haha.
