It's hilarious, but also really shines light on the excellent design, given the restraints of the time. Though it's pretty goofy that Grunts would ever be so bad at throwing grenades, everything else comes off as pretty realistic. When Grunts are attacked by Infection forms, they play the same animations as being stuck by a plasma grenade. An effective solution rather than having to have an entirely different set of animations. Grunts will shoot their own in order to attack the infection forms on a fellow Grunt. Pretty cool details for a game over 20 years old.
Yes, H1 Grunts are quite the comedy masterpiece if you ask me. I had a ball harvesting their hilarity in this particular situation - and don't miss the sequel BCM137 either! I wouldn't say Grunts are bad at throwing grenades though. Certainly they're no good at taking a target's movement into account, and occasionally they glitch somehow and throw in the wrong direction entirely, but if you're stationary they seem deadly accurate, potentially tagging you every time if you don't move. They can even thread a grenade through a tricky gap or over an obstacle. So I certainly pay attention when hearing one of their throw lines called out. PS: Sorry it took a few days before I spotted your comment to approve it. Didn't get notified.
Really great. I'd never heard all that variety of responses from grunts before. LOL'd at several. Also a great object lesson for why its a bad idea to throw sticky's to flood
splaw2002 Thanks, glad you enjoyed these grunty critters so much. In which case, you may like to keep an eye out for BCM137, which is imminent! Sorry my reply is so late. For months I've been unable to comment, but it seems like things are fixed now, so I'm doing a lot of catching up.
Thanks, glad you appreciated this one; it's got to be one of my favourites. Not sure if you realized but there's a sequel too - BCM137. Really sorry it's taken a week for your comment to get approved; TH-cam randomly failed to notify me, so I only saw it today.
I used to do the same thing back on the original Xbox I would watch the grunts fight the flood like this in the olden days. actually I would watch the Marines fight the Covenant 2 as well I just enjoyed watching the AI fight each other
Master of Disguise it's a big thing on the Pc version of halo 1 to watch AI battles, it's entertaining and there are whole maps and mods made for it. It's worth looking into if you enjoyed that. H1 Pc has been patched so it runs in 1080 and higher too.
Man, do I love the Grunts. They managed to be adorable, hilarious, and admittedly badass when they weren't running around waving their arms. The Grunts today aren't as animated or adorable as they used to be. Now they look too...vicious, which takes the charm away. But at least they are still hilarious.
BadCyborgMovies The grunts from Halo 2 are admittedly the cutest. I remember managing to protect my grunt partners in Halo 2 as the Arbiter in the missions they were featured, and reverting my progress if they were killed. Funny how a then 8 year old would have such a protective instinct. Halo 5 has problems, but the grunts were a plus. One of them sang to me. He was so cute. They're back to having actual voices, and I'm not complaining. Hearing the Jackals talk though...It's jarring, but I like it.
Actually I found the H2 Grunts much less amusing than the H1 guys, and soon quit that game. Haven't played H5, but clearly the Grunts are an improvement over the diabolically bad H4 mob.
BadCyborgMovies You quit Halo 2? You missed out on such an amazing experience! 😳 I always assume that Chief's suit translator was too damaged in Halo 4, and that is why he couldn't understand what they were saying. Or maybe that faction of the Covenant were too fanatical to care about human english (as it might have been too vile for their tongues). Having logical reasons beat "because 343 wanted the Covenant to retain the same alien-like qualities they shared from Reach"...which somehow worked better. It would have been nice if the Halo 5 grunts said their famous quips, like "Hurt you!" or "Tag!". It would be a nice callback to the originator of Halo...and show that 343 cares about continuity.
I think you've got it wrong about having a 'translator'. The Grunts actually _spoke_ English. Picked it up (badly) from watching old Earth movies, especially animation. Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was especially popular I believe. As for H4 though, I think the H4 guys were some kind of inferior mutant subspecies who filled in while the _real_ Grunts had a holiday.
You were right to focus your attention on the flood. But these grunts, as they were facing them, why have you not recorded that for those of us on High Charity to watch and laugh?
hes baaack, yo i was talking about you with people from highspeed halo. one guy will probably speedrun H1 again :) was in a twitch chat nice people, reply via inbox if you like
FuzzleHC I remember replying to you via PM as I wasn't able to make comments (later on I couldn't message either). But now I'm able to reply, let me just say… watch out for BCM137, due out today! The Grunts are back in action!

Grunts: "Get down!" " *throw the grenade wall* "
Other Grunts: "Idiot... -__________-"
Grunts: " *dies by grenade* "
Me: Lol. XP

I always look at this fight while on stealth
It's certainly worth watching!
damn that grunt at 4:37 is tough it took 2 shotgun shells to kill him lol XD
Yeah, the first spray of pellets must've just winged him.

Yes, it can be good fun just watching. Sorry your comment didn't get approved sooner, but TH-cam didn't notify me (again!).

H1 Grunts are certainly the best for me, though I did also find the H3 and Reach Grunts amusing.
