Hi! So I get what you re saying about being clean and having clean kids when you arrive at family, but in all honestly, that is very low on my priority list. We travel often with our children (currently 5 boys between 2 and 9 years), usually around 300 km,for my husband's pastorial job. But we also visit family usually annually where we need to travel 2100 kilometers one way. So basically a 2 day journey with approx 15hours (stops included) per day. We stop every 300km for about 40 minutes and when we do stop, the kids need to run, play, explore and be as active as possible. We thus eat breakfast, lunch, snacks, water, coffee while we are driving. We do the drive also screen free and we really dont mind the messes along the way. We clean up at the end of the first day and then again after packing off at family. But after 2 days of 15 hours on the road, we just need to get there. There is really no stopping to make ourselves "presentable" before arriving and everyone is just so happy to see us, that peanut butter smears makes it all the more worth it! 😂
Katy you should try the retractable multi-color pens. Like the ones from the 90's you push down and you can pick any color. We do that with mini notebooks.❤ the kids love them. 😊
We listened to the Now That We Are A Family album with our kiddos this morning and they haven’t made it past God Made because it’s been on repeat. I’m sure the rest of the album is just as good! 😂 Thanks for the video Elisa and Katie! We live 7 hours from family, as well, and this video had so many helpful tips! Blessings!
I found your podcast because I was searching for screen free tips to share with my family that kept trying to push screens on my children despite my requests. Your video on your other channel was so helpful, and I made a playlist and frequent reference it for encouragement to keep this apart of my family lifestyle.
I don’t think it’s wrong to be treated better if you look better. If you dress well you look like you have self respect and if you don’t even look like you have your own self respect then people won’t respect you because you aren’t demanding it. I always feel that if we dress well we are demanding to be treated well!
What is it about Story of the World that stands out above other history books? I have several Christian friends who also recommend it, but from what I’ve seen, it’s not a Christian curriculum. I understand there are plenty of great and useful, secular resources, but history seems like one that would require you to be correcting/reframing a lot as you go through it (particularly ancient history, as they don’t mention Adam and Eve in the section about “the earliest people”). I haven’t used the curriculum, but I know of a lot of Christians who like it, so I’m just curious about why it stands out above Christian curriculums.
The author, Susan Wise Bauer, is a homescool parent, but also a college professor. Often, being in academia will cause someone to drift left. She does claim Christ, but I don't think she considers herself evangelical and is liberal concerning evolution and some issues like feminism. You'd have to do more research on that for details. She has a website, The Well Trained Mind. She's written multiple history books for adults and children. Some other history books are Genevieve Foster, GA Henty, Landmark books. They are all older classics. You'd have to research more on the authors, but they will be more conservative. BTW I did use the Story of the World curriculum. She writes history in a narrative historic fiction style where she makes up stories with children as the characters to present history. I didn't enjoy it, but I don't enjoy fiction in general.
@@tabithafullan9941 Susan Wise Bauer appearing neutral? Well, she herself was homeschooled. She just wrote as a professor, a homeschooled person, and a homeschooler to her own children. She appeals to homeschooling parents because she's a bright, "successful", educated woman which is frankly a huge ambition for most American parents. Education is everything to many parents. We also tend to be fighting the stigma that homeschoolered children are morons. They probably don't care about her political leanings or whether she's biblically conservative. She doesn't pretend to be anything she's not. You have to read a lot of her writing to figure out where she's coming from.
I've agreed with what I've heard on most podcasts. But this is a little much for our family. I think it is ok to "zone out" with a book. I think it's ok to have some "me time". I'm also unwilling to go completely screen free.

Your kids would probably enjoy the Patch the Pirate adventures from Majesty Music. You can get CDs of them.

Oh my word, the knots in the handkerchief thing! I LOVE that idea!! Your mom is a genius!!!

Boiled eggs are awesome snacks for the road.
So many great ideas thanks for sharing!!
The kids always take off their shoes and lose them, so we have a shoe bin. Before you get into your seat your shoes are in the bin.
Thank you so much for this!❤
This info is so useful! Thank you!

Xylitol gum or mints are a great idea because they are sugar free and also clean your children’s mouths and help prevent cavities!
Absolutely loved it! Thank you for Sharing this important Information! Small things make great impact!
OMG. Yes! This video is so timely. We are planning a vacation and I was wondering how we were going to manage with our 1.5yo.

Agreed!
I used to dress my children in "school uniforms" for homeschool, and we got less side eye out in public on school days.
YESSSS!!!!!!!! thank you both❤

Well that makes sense…I wonder if she’s trying to appeal to more audiences too, by appearing “neutral.”

What brand of vitamins do you use?
We share all of the supplements we use at www.nowthatimamotherhealth.com
MLM vitamins I don't understand the logic of vitamins as candy substitutes, especially if they contain iron.
What’s the link to your jumpsuit? I love it! Is it linen?
Same 😅
Your podcast is becoming the "dos and donts" podcast.
100%. Usually the longer you listen to someone you become more endeared to them. It’s the opposite for this one.
