Thank-you for commenting. The IC had those big black bad boys and while they were not 'colorful' they did give off a sense of hulking power. The CN scheme has some nice red to it, but I enjoyed the old Rock Island red a lot more. You are probably aware that CN has been repainting some of the black IC, but then keeping the locomotive number and even stenciling Illinois Central on the unit. I have to give them a lot of credit for trying to preserve some lineage!
Yeah very glad they are still keeping the engine numbers and adding the IC to show they are ex IC engines. Agree with you on the original black livery giving a sense of the power and hulk of them. Hopefully I'll get over to see some in the original livery before they are all painted into CN livery.
Nice to see some of the IC locos are still in the original colours, although the CN livery isn't displeasing to the eye. Nice little vid, living here in the UK I rely on vids like this to keep to date with all things IC/CN although I am more a fan of the IC for sure.
Only thing that's discouraging about the Freeport sub is that now theres 2-3 trains a day, sometimes 4 if traffic has come off of the CN Leithton sub in Wayne Illinois. There's the Addison local which I believe runs 3 times a week , but for me at least, catching anything on the Freeport is very hit or miss. Weekends, especially Sundays are usually dead on the whole subdivision, and if anything there's 1 train that day.
+LeveledLariat The Addison Local seem,s to be more of a daily thing at Hillside (M-F) the through freights come through every couple of hours, and some days there can be close to twenty that travel through Elmhurst (I'm close enough to the tracks that they'll wake me up). I think the CN has been letting other lines come off the IHB and travel the Sub until the EJ&E at Munger, where they'll jump off. West of Munger I almost never see anything! Last summer, I tried to follow the Cn (old IC) across Iowa, but that was a huge disapointment. The only power were the weird modern rail riders at the larger elavators west of DuBuque.
Oh is there really? Didn't know that there were that many trains on the freeport sub now. Been seeing a good increase in traffic or its my timing is good, but I havent seen a train anywhere west of Munger rd in over 4 years, but have seen trains anywhere east of it
I think so... Elmhurst, Hillside, Westchester, North Riverside, then I believe it skirts through Cicero and Berwyn. On the other end, the line terminates in Council Bluffs Iowa (Omaha Ne area). Thank you for viewing and commenting.
I would have to concur with that. Growing up in Elmhurst when it still IC/ICG and I can vividly remember you could hear a train on the approach for miles. Have a great weekend everyone
A worthy endeavor indeed. Those old locomotives are rapidly leaving the scene. Preserving history, even if only on video, is a good thing to do.

Awesome! Love the IC SD70s and the EJ&E SD40-2s! I wish I could see those. I never saw a EJ&E or a IC before!
Hang along the Freeport long enough and you'll see some fallen flags and maybe some foreign power.

Great video!

LeveledLariat I've caught a train on a Sunday on the Freeport sub
Is that the line that also runs all the way into Cicero and Berwyn?

man i hate that its a quiet zone for elmhurst and just about the whole line
