Trucks. And trucks deliver goods faster . You can blame society and the cost of maintaining aging railroads from the late 1880s. Also the bicycle crowd cried loud enough to get their rails to trails.
Yes trucks have taken over railroads but railroads have done it to themselves. As a former chemical driver, I know for a fact that it takes 2 weeks for the locomotive to show up after a chemical order is placed. Then another 3-7 days for the shipment to arrive at the customer then the customer is almost out of chemical so they have to call the tanker drivers to start bringing emergency shipments until the railroad arrives.
You can also blame the US government for turning their backs on railroads after WWII while handing out subsidies to the up and coming airline industry. Also, most Americans could better afford a family car during that period. That being said, I've traveled all over Europe by train having frequent schedules that take you anywhere you want to go. Why it works there and not here is that governments own and maintain the physical right of ways while individual railroad companies lease time on those tracks.
I have seen similiar videos --- why do they need a modern diesel at the end pushing everything. Could the steam loco at the front not hack it or am I missing something?
As a child I fondly remember the C&O K-4's going in and out of the Russell, KY yards. I believe some of those coaches were prior C&O. Those were the days of steam and cinders.
What a beautiful sight.. and I'm not even a train person. I just love big old technology.
That was worth the wait. Steamers are super cool. Thanks for posting without music and talking.
I used to hear that when I was a kid, late at night.
Beautiful sound!
What a beauty!!!! I love trains. They are so soothing to listen to.. This one is a gem.... From Michigan..🌲🌲🌲🌲.....

I am fortunate------- I live VERY CLOSE to railroad tracks, and absolutely LOVE hearing that whistle at night while I'm sleeping!! ❤❤❤
How did we let ourselves get talked out of railroads? This is our national heritage and history.

I agree...I come from a family of railroad workers and it's in my DNA! Any time I hear a train whistle blowing, my heart leaps.

And 1980 4 CSX Railroad 2 Get Formed Celebrating 5 years ago in 1985!
This country grew because of trains and tractor trailers. Very efficient transport of goods.
Even the steam coming from the train was gorgeous

Just in case it fails, and it recently did.

How can you learn when they are running these things and where, I live only 40 minutes from there, I would have loved to have gone and seen it.
There was a bar in temple, that had good pizza and great chili….
Notice the locomotive at the end.
Iron, Fire and Water. Love it.

Spell out 1985! 4 Metra! 2 Get Screwed up!
Burned out signal light overhead
Another Van Swearingen Berkshire putting on a show. Same 2-8-4 as NKP 765, C&O K-4, Virginian, and W&LE.

Sweet ride 🛞
What is it, a railfan excursion?
Was this a color tour?
It'd be so baddass to see that in person!!
Bit of a bummer seeing the diesel pusher.
I'm sure he was just towing it; in case the steam locomotive runs out of gas.
@@user-Dr. The steam locomotive runs out of gas?
@@martinsundland7614 Well you know, there's not a lot of refilling stations around for those things anymore.
@@user-Dr. For sure, but you would think that they're not being sent out on a longer trip than fuel and water would warrant.
Isn’t the “pusher” to provide power and braking for the carriages?
28K views, impressive.
1980-1985!
sounds a lot better than BIG BOY .
Inspiration for The Polar Express.
Way cool stuff

one 1/2 minute of bells and lights---- 30 seconds of train!!! CUT OWN ON LEAD TIME!!!!!!
AND being pushed by a diesel
I hate those damn continuous bells
Railroad crossing alarms are like me and chronic pain: Pain is a warning. After a while I say, "Hey! You warned me already. Now shut up!"
You people gotta get lives
