Good representation of adolescence. When we're young, we don't truly appreciate the wisdom of our parents, teachers, or elders, and wish to do things our way, but when the time comes for us to make the big decisions, only then we realize how wise and experienced they truly were. It's normal to yearn for those times of learning, just like Hikaru here wishes for Sai to return, but just as he did later, we gotta move on and accept our roles as the next line of parents, teachers, and elders.
Well we know how a bratty brat Hikaru had been from the start, so that will be a natural development; but it's also touching to see, that as self-centered Hikaru was, his love for Sai(a representation of his friend and teacher) suppressed his own desire of self expression and validation, to the extent that he's actually accepting to give up all his life's chances for him to play go, in exchange for Sai's return. Not like Torajirou who cherish Sai's genius, Hikaru's reason for willing to become a go puppet putting stones for Sai is simply for him to take his dear friend back... And then Sai become his whole reason of pursuing go: for he can only feel Sai alive when he plays, and for that Hikaru's effort and success are the only things that can prove Sai's existence inthe past and pass on Sai's will. Hikaru no longer live for himself, but will ever carry on the burden from his attachment for Sai.
It's amazing how they show the different stages of grief through Hikaru. At first he's in denial that Sai is gone, then he's angry, thinking that Sai has somehow played a trick on him. Here we see the bargaining stage... "God, I'll let him play every game if he can just come back!". Then we see him very depressed and quitting Go, in hopes that it will bring Sai back somehow. At the end, we see him go through acceptance, realizing that Sai is in his Go and that the only way for him to 'be' with Sai is to play. Anyone who has ever lost someone important will definitely recognized what Hikaru's going through.
The most emotional thing for me about Sai's disappearing scene is that it isn't some big, dramatic death scene with the protagonist crying and watching helplessly. Sai just... leaves. He departs, knowing fully what's happening, and Hikaru hasn't grasped the importance of the situation until that moment, then throws himself into denial before giving up Go completely, regretting not listening to Sai more. Hikaru doesn't cry until he registers it all, and when it finally sinks in he lets out the tears that denial restrained. The overall emotional theme is how Hikaru wishes he had spent more time with Sai, and his rejecting Sai's pleads and worries is his biggest guilt he carries with him for a lifetime. What he took for granted had been taken away, and all the thoughts of 'what if' flood him
😭 the way Sai disappeared was a hard pill to swallow and no doubt it definitely enhanced Hikaru's breakdown. There was no closure for the end of their relationship and the end of Sai's existence. Except that fleeting moment in Hikaru's dream.
I had a knot in my throat holding back those tears from the episode Sai disappeared until this one when Hikaru finally let his tears go. Sai was such a wonderful character it was sad to see him go
I remember I started bawling at this part. It was so emotional, and after reading from the manga- watching it in the anime, hearing the voices- it was so much different. It hit me on a whole other level.
so much feels in this anime, I also remember in the second school tournament when Hikaru realises than he's not strong enough and asks Sai to play, and he says "omae ute"...
its sad that Sai have to leave but Hikaru will not let Sai's disappearance be in vain. I truly think Hikaru will learn from Sai's disappearance and thus making him stronger.
And yet Hikaru is completely wrong. Sai had his time, in the Heian era, as a not-so-dead person. He lived, breathed, and existed for Go, and when he could not bear living without it, he drowned himself. As a spirit he took over a young boy's life, co-creating the legendary Shuusaku while litigating his own obsessive quest for the ultimate Divine Move. He might have achieved it at the expense of another young child, but instead he let Hikaru live his own life, develop his own skills, and become his own person. A worthy sacrifice for someone who has just spent 1000 years trying to grasp the meaning of life, only to finally get it as this young child enters adolescence. This is Hikaru's time, not Sai's.
I am thinking that if Sai continues to reside in Hikaru's heart and uses Hikaru's body to play Go, Hikaru will not be able to live his own life and grow up. Everyone has one life only. And Sai has had 2 lifes: his own life and Torajirou's life already.
Agreed with everything but that last part. The memories aren't to be damned, the moments we have with those in our lives are the only thing that's our own. And it's in carrying those memories that we make new ones with those that come after us. It's through memories life goes on.
For me, Hikaru was a good character, before become Insei. He still das a little idiot, but not annoying like when grew up. After this he became am asshole. I didn't like him.
I didn't like the younger Hikaru. Undisciplined, uncontrolled, and selfish. When we first see him he's rifling through his grandfather's belongings looking for something valuable to sell. He's a vulgar, insensitive child. I thought he matured and changed into a much better person, perhaps not as cute, but with much better potential. I think Hikaru did just fine for himself, and will eventually become a formidable adult, as well as a superb Go player.
It's been a long while since I watched the show, but from what I remember the divine move is equal to how God would play the game. It's more of a symbolism of perfection in a Go game.
He _was_ a bit of a brat. 😂 Although I think it went both ways, Hikaru didn't fully appreciate Sai's genius and Sai couldn't see past his desire to play and realize he's meant to pass his game on to Hikaru. But this is the moment Hikaru stopped being a brat and saw things from Sai's perspective.
Good representation of adolescence. It's very sad too, because I thought that he'd come back after some drama, be he didn't...

I cried on this part it was so sad when sai left. A lot of times we don't realize how precious something is until it's gone.

This part here really broke my heart, especially when Hikaru thought he should’ve let Sai play so that Sai would stay with him.
The voice acting here is absolutely brilliant and heartwrenching. I just found out that Hikaru's voice actress, Tomoko Kawakami, passed away in 2011.
Actually 2008, we think?

Shusaku's ear-reddening move becomes Sai's eye-reddening move.

Name of piano piece?
Your comment made me look up HikaGo OST pieces on TH-cam, and now I want the OST 1 for myself so bad... Why haven't I realized this earlier?
The soundtrack that plays in this scene is Hikaru no Go - OST 1 - 11 - Tomadoi I think it's the piano version of the first Hikaru no Go ending song.
Dont worry, here comes the WAAAAAAAAAmbulance! :D

not gonna lie, when I read the manga and came across this part...I was genuinely sad that sai had to leave :(

I was so upset when Sai disappeared I cried because he did not hear him say goodbye. Hikaru owes him so much. Brat!
