    Music can be so subjective.
For me, “Wonderful Christmastime” and “Got My Mind Set on You” have always been two ex-Beatle classics. On the other hand, “Waterfalls” and “Wah-Wah” set my teeth on edge.
    There’s no accounting for taste!

I agree with most of your points. I did and still do like Got My Mind Set On You but was slightly disappointed with the album at first as it sounded like ELO!
One of the biggest disappointments for me is what they didn't do, provide us with a live concert from the modern era, complete with a modern sound system, filmed in a modern auditorium. Something that would compare with what Stones or Elvis fans have.

I think you were about one year ahead of me in terms of your Beatles journey. I began mine in 1979 at age 15. But to sum up - yes, the 80s were lean years for Classic Rock in general, but the Beatles in particular. A few bright spots but it wasnt until the end of the decade that we were given new hope. I have the picture single for Spies Like Us but like you, have not bothered to see the actual movie. I hated those terrible ex SNL alum comedies from the 80s.

Thank you John...Spies Like Us is an OK movie however it disappoints as the song is concerned. I went to see the film as a teenager just to see how the song was integrated with the story. Was frustrated when the song finally plays only during the closing credits! I stubbornly there, as the theater emptied, so I could listen to the song I came for 😅. I always thought the tempo change in that song should have come in sooner. It's a pretty good rocker at the increased speed IMO.

I was a little kid when Broadstreet came out and (having seen the Southbank special on TV and read about it in Beatles Monthly) begged my mum to take me to see it. We sat in a large cinema in Harrow that was completely empty, but for mum, my sister, myself and an old lady who was asleep! Yet, I really enjoyed it, primarily because I was recently into The Beatles and here was a live one releasing stuff. Now, I see Bstreet as an unwise, poorly thought out/poorly written vanity project from Macca. Watching again recently, he seems directionless, alone and quite depressed-obviously, still shocked by Lennon's murder. The new songs are uniformly bland, bar the magnificence of No More Lonely Nights, but the Eleanor Rigby fantasy sequence still stands up- Eleanor's Dream is a lovely instrumental piece too- and the Ballroom Dancing sequence works well. Paul never mentions this film anymore and has never even played Lonely Nights (a huge hit) live, the film's failure obviously cut deep. This experience did him some good though as it humbled him (he really needed some humility in the early 80's). Thinking back, I still remember the terrible C64 game of the film that came out at the same time! But I am trying to forget the dreadful wine bar version (complete with awful sax solo) of The Long and Winding Road-a version that comes (ironically) complete with Phil Spector-esque arrangements. I have a soft spot for Spies Like Us, as I loved it as a kid and played it endlessly. The film is very average and not worth watching. Anything's preferable to Off The Ground-possibly Macca's worst ever album.- though Driving Rain comes close!

I don't mind "Wonderful Christmastime" and i didn't mind it then. I agree, though, it lacks the harder edge of punk and new wave. I would certainly put it in a different class to "Spies Like Us". There wasn't really a feeling of nostalgia for The Beatles in the late seventies. Music was continually on the move, and while respected, The Beatles at that point had been thought to have been left far behind. How times change!
I agree about "Got My Mind Set On You" but the reason it was a hit and "Blow Away" wasn't is because it sounded contemporary with the booming drums. It was great George was back, but i wish it could have been with an original composition, and one that didn't try so hard to sound modern

I find your statements on John and Yoko's relationship and musical direction a bit too harsh. There are many musicians today who respect John Lennon's work, which certainly isn't "popular" like McCartney, which you have admitted kind of hurt Paul in some of his Eighties albums and single releases. The Seventies were easier music to make for all four Beatles and for many artists and musicians. By the eighties, the music was a wall of sound which had some great groups and solo artists, but didn't fit for the solo Beatles music. Elvis Costello brought the Eighties sound with Paul on Flowers in the Dirt and Off the Ground which was a vast improvement in song writing. Songs like Figure of Eight, Put it There and Soleil really expanded Paul's veneer lyric with a pop jingle. Then Paul did the Fireman Series which again, was more interesting music, even though not commercial success, at least for this Century or even the next. George Harrison is again way too critical, for me, his albums are solid even though productions were weak, but that will improve as time goes on. George's guitar playing is now even getting a better rap with the Beatles songs more than ever and Cloud 9 is some of his best song writing. Ringo is limited but did well with good musicians that will be a good legacy. McCartney will always remain the top performer and song writer for many decades to come.

Wonderful Christmastime is great song in my opinion. The background whistle-type synth stuff is actually very pretty when you focus on it. I'm a big Moog-type synth fan, so the synth sounds on it are delicious to me rather than annoying. It's lightweight but the only reason that's a problem is because it's over-played. If it wasn't overplayed, it'd be called a hidden gem.

Paul had some success with "Tug Of War", a the kind of syrupy album full of Granny music John Lennon hated so much, yet ended up composing half an album of on "Double Fantasy". While the former caused Paul much harm careerwise, the latter was a totally disappointing flop of an album which sold well in the beginning only because it was John's first album in 5 years, but according to Albert Goldman in his book "The Lives Of John Lennon", record stores were returning it to the label by the trainloads as when word got around that it sucked, the stores found themselves drowning in unsold stock. Only the murder of Lennon saved the album from being trashed from coast to coast and pole to pole. Although we know that Wings was Paul and an backing band, at least the band may have had some input or Paul would have been embarrassed to bring a lot of the songs he released in the 1980s to the band. When George Martin told Paul to ditch the band and go solo, it was the beginning of the end. There is very little good material Paul released in the 1980s. Little wonder that soon after the spectacular flop of "Broadstreet", Paul fired George Martin and hired other producers. Unfortunately Paul needed YES Men and George Martin was The Yes Man, but to a fault, as he was no longer controlling the quality but rather following orders like an errand boy. Paul always needed a John Lennon figure to slap him back to his senses when he came up with crap. Paul was free and unfettered.... and the 1980s back to back crap albums and singles were the result.

Any group of musicians that release the amount of material The Beatles did as a group and solo there will be low points. I’ve never connected with George’s Gone Troppo. No hooks on the songs, just completely forgettable in my opinion. Paul for me was always inconsistent apart from his debut, RAM, Band on the Run and Flowers in the Dirt. I found a lot of his solo and Wings albums had a lot of filler but he always made me buy every album because there were at least three great songs on even his weakest LP’s.

He is refreshingly somewhat more intelligent and more analytical than some of the American beatle cast fan base who are much less intelligent and whose takes are pedestrian and run of the mill Despite the revisionist thinking yoko ono and Linda brought nothing but putrid input to post Beatles solo songs. They had no business in that recording studio. Paul once told Mary his daughter that wings should have added Toni tennille as their keyboardist and backing singer. I do watch your videos because there are occasions a piece of information I don't know comes up. But in my opinion I think only a sycophant would think that they need to sit down and make a video describing how they were not a sycophant and here are the reasons why. I think nobody really cares.

I just watched a punter give his opinion on Beatles records. Why bother to film yourself doing that? If you hadn't done it I wouldn't have watched and had such a meaningless experience
