Both Sound of white Noise and Divine Intervention have grown on me a lot after some years have passed by. They have grown so much that I had to re-purchase both CD's a while ago, as I had already got rid of those many years ago.
After hearing the initial 3 albums from each of these bands,i would've never expected Megadeth to be anywhere near the 2nd out of the 4 in terms of popularity, and get this...those first 3 are my favorites...I just liked the other bands far more and thought they had more of what metal fans would continue to purchase.
I’ve always liked Divine Intervention and Sound of White Noise, but I hardly ever think to circle back to those albums for some reason. I will definitely be revisiting those after listening to this.

Seasons,White Noise, Garage Inc were all great but I liked Kreator Metal Church Death far more during the 90s...I legit have forgotten the late 90s Megadeth albums, can't remember at all.
19:56 re: shocking (part 2). But it as Martin pointed out, there was the music but also the goth look and an album cover with blood & semen... it was a pretty weird twist under the rubric of "artistic growth"
Personally i love Undisputed Attitude from Slayer,They picked some great covers back in the 90s i was into punk and Thrash And Death metal so i definitely was a staple in my list of albums from that time.Diablous in musica didnt really like it at the time but dig it alot more now, sure they left that thrash sound behind but it was still a very heavy album and theres some good groove too it.I wouldn't classify it anywheres as a "Nu Metal"album like alot of people do.
great show guys! Really enjoy these ranking videos. But how come undisputed attitude is in the ranking when garage inc. isnt? they are both full lenght cover albums from the 90s?
I love this topic. I think Megadeth had the best 90s releases. Two anyway. An absolute classic in Rust, and a minor classic in Countdown. The Black album was good. Anthrax Persistence and Sound of white noise were great albums. Slayer never released a bad album. Exodus had some lackluster albums in the nineties. Overkill never gets any love. My favorite Testament album came out in 92. I could go on and on about this, but i wont. Good day.
I enjoyed Load and Reload well enough for what they were. Those albums get accused of being Metallica going alt-rock, but I hear Metallica going 70's hard rock instead. But I do have to admit, that if you cherry picked the best material from both disks, you'd have one really strong and creative album.
I really Load and Reload when they came out and still dig them today. I got into metal as a teen in the early 90s, loved the thrash stuff and the Black Album but for me when they came out with Load they were one of the coolest bands on the planet! Yes they changed but so did The Beatles going through the 60s and in both cases those changes kept the bands massive. And you make a great point about Metallica going for 70s hard rock (which is what a lot of grunge acts did too) If in an alternate universe a rock band put out Load/Reload songs in the 1970s they'd have been as big as Led Zepp!
LA Woman by The Doors is “The Album Where The Wheels Fell Off The Wagon” according to Martin Popoff, the man who single-handedly ruined Sea Of Tranquility…I need a Homer Simpson right about now-DDDUuuuhhh!
Popoff and Pardo are at it again with another of my mind calls the 'blender' series. Not familiar enough with all these albums to even try a ranking such as this but, again, that in no way diminishes the interest of watching Martin and Pete ranking these albums and comparing their relative preferences of the combined catalogue. Of the ones that have listened to, personal top pick of those hears would be the same as the top choice of the episode. Thanks once again, gents, for another fun time in the Funhouse. There ya go!
Outlaw Torn is the best song on Load and Reload combined. Its got amazing atmosphere and top notch vocals and lyrics from James. I guess some like Martin can find it boring but for me its so amazing. Thats how you do a album closer, right. I think Fixxxer on Reload was attempt to copy that same formula and its ok but not as good.
"Metallica" was actually my 1st Metallica-Album. Made me a Fan. My Sister bought "Load" a bit later. And I hated it. I don't think "Metallica" sounds similar to either "Load"-Album at all.
Couldn’t disagree more about Load and Reload. Tons of atmosphere and depth in those albums, listen to those way more now than the 80’s albums thrash gets boring too quick for me anyways.
The heyday of 'big four' thrash bands was the '80s, not the '90s. The music business tried to erase thrash in the Summer of 1991. Only acts like Suicidal Tendencies, Nuclear Assault, Rancid, S.O.D., Rage, Overkill, (and I would argue progenitors Motorhead, and Accept) stayed badass thrash. The rest of the thrash acts turned '90s Nu 'metal' quicker than the Rolling Stones & the Bee Gees turned disco in the mid-'70s.
19:48 "what the hell is this?" ... I was watching late at night in bed and this line cracked me up so bad... literally LOL for 5 minutes. I'm not into Metallica but I do remember the reception in 1996.
I don't understand why people still try to separate grunge and metal, like metal disappeared with the rise of grunge, while not every grunge band was embracing it, the two best alice in chains and soundgarden in my opinion had alot of metal inspiration in their songs
The more Megadeth changed, the more they sold, the more Anthrax detoured the less they sold lol Is kinda what Martin meant....Slayer actually had the most steady pace of all these bands as far as sales and style also.
Slayer sold the least of these bands, back in the 80's (no videos on MTV). There wasn't really a sense that they would ever be a "commercial" band. So I feel they stayed under the radar, whereas Metallica and Megadeth kept getting bigger.... Anthrax were always rather a divisive band, and booting Joey's distinctive (for better or worse) voice and bringing in the gruff howl of John Bush didn't really attract any new fans while antagonizing established fans.
@@ryanjacobson2508 I would estimate worldwide sales from 1983-2023 were Metallica 110 million/Megadeth 30 million/Slayer 20 million/Anthrax near 15 million based off the Soundscan # and Billboard for the pre 1992 releases..... Slayer never had that drastic a change in sales or style, while the others all did with both....
@@ericrobertson2024I would like to know Slayer's #s for pre 1990. Anthrax had lots of MTV exposure, Slayer had no videos at all before the 90's. From 1990-1992, thrash had huge sales, but in the actual 80's, sales were growing but still thrash was fairly niche. The early 90's cultural revolution was big for Slayer cuz in the 80's, they were the type of band that some parents would disown you for listening to.

@@djacobmadrigal I love Paul,Anton,Will, etc but I quickly switched the tv or radio every time I heard Megadeth begin in that era, but I liked the early albums.
Why would you include Slayer's cover album, but not Metallica's Garage Inc? It was released in '98, so definitely in contention for inclusion here, and was undoubtably more successful than Slayer's Undisputed Attitude. It also has one of Metallica's finest productions on disc one. Having it included would've also forced Pete to correct his statement about Reload being Jason Newsted's last album with the band.
Only the Slayer albums for me. Divine Intervention was a classic. When I was in 6th grade, I use to come home from school and play that album almost every day. I wasn’t a huge fan of the albums that followed. But they were better than Load and Reload from Metallica and Crytic Writings from Megadeth. I loved 80’s Anthrax. But I don’t care about 90’s Anthrax. Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax decided to be friendly to the 90’s Alternative/Grunge crowd. Slayer, for the most part stood to their roots.

Would definitely love a 2000's episode. I already know my #1 for that time period (2000-Today?) is The Sick, The Dying, and the Dead (Megadeth - 2022). Freaking killer album, best since Rust In Peace.
Anthrax came back going hard as all hell as well.
I never imagined Martin’s reappraisal of Slayer was for him to land on Divine Intervention as the most highly rated in this exercise.
Pete’s top 4 is spot on IMO.

Wow a whole show and Martin didn't mention four on the floor drumming once.
Both Sound of white Noise and Divine Intervention have grown on me a lot after some years have passed by. They have grown so much that I had to re-purchase both CD's a while ago, as I had already got rid of those many years ago.
Garage Inc is actually my favorite...My overall favorite album of the 90s is the Live Meltdown Priest album.
My top 5 would be: 1. Season in the Abyss, 2. Sound of white noise, 3. Rust in peace, 4. Divine Intervention, 5. Countdown to Extinction
Reload and Load are the best Metallica albums songwriting-wise

1. Seasons in the Abyss
2. Rust in Peace
3. Persistence of Time

AJFA was well received when it came out but has been retroactively nit-picked by some people.
Seasons,White Noise, Garage Inc were all great but I liked Kreator Metal Church Death far more during the 90s...I legit have forgotten the late 90s Megadeth albums, can't remember at all.
Kreator- outcast is very good
@@irishspagetti6565 Yep,the only Kreator I didn't like was the most recent.
Hell yeah this is a fun show! Martin's just a humble guy..😉
I think vol 8 Is awesome
Martin "Hot Take" Popoff's lists are WILD. I can at least agree that Divine Intervention is super underrated

great show guys! Really enjoy these ranking videos. But how come undisputed attitude is in the ranking when garage inc. isnt? they are both full lenght cover albums from the 90s?
I only listen to 2 1990s albums of all these bands, and that’s Seasons in the Abyss & R.I.P.
Great List. Love the CTE love.
Why is Garage Inc not on here if Slayer’s covers album is?
Idk but it's my favorite if included
Spot on! Rust in peace definitely the best.
And you make a great point about Metallica going for 70s hard rock (which is what a lot of grunge acts did too)
If in an alternate universe a rock band put out Load/Reload songs in the 1970s they'd have been as big as Led Zepp!
LA Woman by The Doors is “The Album Where The Wheels Fell Off The Wagon” according to Martin Popoff, the man who single-handedly ruined Sea Of Tranquility…I need a Homer Simpson right about now-DDDUuuuhhh!
I'd be so interested if you guys do the 2000's
Popoff and Pardo are at it again with another of my mind calls the 'blender' series. Not familiar enough with all these albums to even try a ranking such as this but, again, that in no way diminishes the interest of watching Martin and Pete ranking these albums and comparing their relative preferences of the combined catalogue. Of the ones that have listened to, personal top pick of those hears would be the same as the top choice of the episode. Thanks once again, gents, for another fun time in the Funhouse. There ya go!
Interesting video ... Looking forward for Sodom ranking the albums soon I hope
Have you guys done this series with Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and some other notable NWOBHM? If not, that has to be on the list, no?
I know you didn't include EPs, but Anthrax's Attack of the Killer Bs would rank really high for me!
"Metallica" was actually my 1st Metallica-Album. Made me a Fan. My Sister bought "Load" a bit later. And I hated it. I don't think "Metallica" sounds similar to either "Load"-Album at all.
1. Rust in Peace
2. Countdown to Extinction
3. Stomp 442
4. Youthanasia
5. Sound of White Noise
"Steely Dan of trash"... like that one
Even though I don't care for any of these albums, aside from Rust in Peace. I still like this discussion.
Rancid?
@@Kyush4 rancid? what if there was a thrash band called rancid from dallas and another thrash band called rancid from michigan?
oh wait.
Rust in Peaxe and Seasons but although from 1990 those are kind of eighties masterpieces
Pete,I love Martin, but to put Cryptic Writings below the 2 Load albums, ouch that hurts.
Another great episode, gentlemen.
I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but will we be getting a Anno Domini review soon?
I think Martin would be the only person who doesn't like the Anthrax logo.
I’d agree with Martin on this
@@dertodesking8379 you'd be the only one
Great logo

I Love all Slayer and Love those John Bush era Anthrax albums!!! With Metallica the black album is good and loved Garage Inc, basically the beginning and end of the decade. Hated the Load/Reload eras. Those albums had a couple good tunes but the way they played the old stuff live in that period was horrible. Megadeth is my least favorite. Countdown was cool but that’s it for me lol

Better is a deep, weird subject, especially when you try to define it as completely objective. This is our personal rankings.

Bill Clinton??
@@ericrobertson2024 No; why would Bill Clinton play harmonica on The David Letterman show?
@@djacobmadrigal lol he played saxophone on Arsenio Hall around that time.
@@ericrobertson2024 it’s Paul Schaefer, the funny guy, musician who led the band on The David Letterman show. Geeze.
So, not even ‘Rust In Peace’?
Rust in Peace and Seasons are the absolute classics. And seeing touring together on those albums was epic.
Diabolus is crap, but Bitter Peace is raging. I never understand why it doesn't get more love...
