Referring to two pandas as "idiots", the plane being called the Panda Express... man, there's a lot of gold in this script.
Well, the FedEx Panda Express is its actual name painted on the plane. Sam didnt do it, the jokes just write themselves.
Just aslo thought that Pan-Dee and Pan-Dah are HAI jokes but it was their real name.

German compound words are the same as English noun phrases, except they're written without spaces:
"panda diplomacy" translates to "Panda-Diplomatie"
"birthday present" translates to "Geburtstagsgeschenk"
English noun phrases *act* as nouns, but in German they *are* nouns.
If we add spaces between roots we get:
"Geburtstagsgeschenk" = "Geburt‿s‿tag‿s‿Geschenk"
(the "s"-es there don't mean plural, like in English, but are just joining the nouns, so it's easier to say. In the first example, the "-" is used with the same intention)
So
"Geburt" means "birth"
"Tag" means "day"
"Geschenk" means "present"/"gift"
notice how in English, the noun phrase "birth day" became a single noun - "birthday"
That should really give you a feel for german compound words.
The same thing happened with
"to day" -> "to-day" -> "today"
"web site" -> "web-site" -> "website"
and many others

Agree on the china housing crisis though. Whilst there are lots of empty homes they're also overpriced for most people and built to continually inflate that housing bubble.

I grew up in san diego and there was always a huge line to see the pandas. All they did was hide and sleep. Never wanted to wait in line and never saw the pandas lol
the reason that is the case is because those pandas are so mistreated and out of shape. Check the ones anywhere else and you wont find it like this

My girlfriend's dad works at the memphis FedEx headquarters! He was the person in charge of the line maintenance checks for the airplane carrying these pandas! He was very proud of himself for helping get these pandas where they needed to go safely!

The two adult pandas here in Atlanta are actually still ours until late 2024, not this December.
Yeah I think some are still looking at some of the earlier news and I see just last month there was an update that it will be sometime in 2024.

As a DMV resident I hate how much funding gets diverted to Pandas and the political leverage theyre used for meanwhile China continues to destroy their habitat causing them to become more endangered while we waste money on their breeding and conservation programs as China continues to push them to extinction.

Edinburgh Zoo has just returned its pair after a three year delay because of the pandemic delaying their scheduled return in 2020.

Went to the national zoo this summer as part of a DC trip, got a last look at the pandas without even knowing they were on their way out. It's sad they're going but it's more sad that all the infrastructure and devotion of the team at the zoo might be wasted. People don't work in zoos for the money, they do it for the passion. It sucks that they might lose out for politics.
I'm pretty sure that we'll get more pandas eventually. We had a gap for a year after Hsing Hsing died. Eventually we got Tian Tian and Mei Xian, who went on to produce four healthy cubs who are all now back at Wolong.
@@tessat338 Some of your fellow countryfolk might have jinxed that though with their social media posts in regard to the Memphis (I think) pandas claiming that they were being abused and demanding China take them back - seemed to be something to do with internal politics given the number of times politicians names were mentioned - democrat and republican - and the pandas were a means to an end. Seems to have ceased once they returned to China and China confirmed that they WEREN'T abused, the male died from natural causes and the female was suffering from a relatively commons skin complaint which the zoo had been successfully treating (says something when China has to come to the aid of a US zoo who were being accused of abusing animals and all by know-it=alls on social media who DON'T know what they are talking about anyway). That certainly seemed to put a damper on things and it left a nasty taste in the mouth as well reading all the abusive comments on the internet.

A number of years ago the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska was next on the list of American zoos to get pandas. They went through the process but the Chinese authorities kept making increasingly large demands. Around that time, a delegation from Taiwan was going to visit Nebraska to sign a letter of intent for grain purchases Nebraska’s Governor. The Chinese side told the Omaha zoo that if they didn’t get the Governor to cancel the signing then they wouldn’t get the pandas. The Henry Doorly Zoo had enough by that point and gave up trying to get pandas.
I actually live near that zoo, I remember going there around 2015 and seeing all these signs and construction, there was this huge red banner announcing the pandas. Obviously they never came so now the area has some savanna animals, the main feature are elephants iirc

I am from San Diego and I was so sad when the pandas left our zoo. I miss them. The exhibit now doesn’t feel the same
I feel like the National Zoo should devote more resources towards other animals. With the amount of tourists visiting there should be a bigger celebration of North American wildlife. Not to mention how many first class zoos do just fine without Pandas.
I saw the menphis pandas only a month or two before they left. They looked depressed.

This sounds very similar to how dolphins and whales are shipped as well. Something also to add is that the time of actual moving of the animals is usually kept as a pretty close secret except to those people who are directly involved in it, mostly due to organizations like PETA. It also usually happens in the middle of the night, both to help avoid getting stuck in things like traffic jams, which could distress the animals, as well as to make it harder to attract protesters.
Well imagine what would happen if PETA instead of just killing pets would actually kill a panda.

Well it all depends. If the CCP loses power due to the failing economy and (more importantly failing birthrate) in China then who knows what could happen.

Absolutely love your videos and I learn SO MUCH from you. Not all would be strictly relevant as I'm in Europe (Ireland) but great none the less. One thing I will never ever understand is how metric (mm's) can ever be viewed as more complicated than imperial. I understand a lack of familiarity but there just is no argument that a decimalized system (1000mm = 1meter, etc). I can't see the USA ever upgrading though, if only due to people's lack of familiarity / fluency! Thanks again for all your great content
At least if we want to see a panda or dozen there are plenty of other European zoos that have them although Scotland's have just returned to China. It would be nice if Dublin or Cork got pandas but I suspect the cost would outweigh any added income. Thinking about a visit to France shortly, they had a baby panda born recently.

We’ve never had giant pandas in our local zoo, but we have red pandas, which are cuter, climb trees and regularly just leave the enclosure because there’s no actual thing stopping them from walking off, and going to hang out with the otters.
Not as bad as the orangutans, who in theory are contained, but in practise view any barrier as a challenge and have broken out of not only the enclosure but the zoo, more than once, and in total kidnapping one toddler (I think she wanted her baby orangutan to have a friend?? They got a kilometre away)
Orangutans are adventurers, they love to roam because apart from seeking out diet variety, it also help them maintain their dexterity which is detrimental in their survivability.
But the fact that they kidnap a toddler shows that they already considered the zoo their home. So there's that.

No, bamboo can grow in most parts of the US and is considered an invasive species. Sam mentioned in the video that volunteers grow it in their backyards.
@@UncommonElevators But pandas can be picky eaters and if they don't like the bamboo that is in season - such as now in Korea at least - then the keepers have problems.

This video completely missed the massive situation at Memphis zoo where a panda died and a second was in terrible condition. That was the reason why China took the pandas back.
That was more an excuse. If China cared about the condition of the pandas they would have recalled them long ago, and only the ones having problems. This is entirely political.

There was also rumors that alleges the Memphis Zoo did not take care of the pandas properly, where it was shown the pandas were as thin as a carpet
I used to live there and I swear they kept them in their feeding rooms way more than they should have. They always looked kinda...ratty? And I never once saw them in the outdoor play enclosure even though I went to the zoo all the time (my art school was right next to it)
Chinese authorities debunked this rumor but some netizens refuse to believe.

Quite sad to say that Australia’s only two Pandas, Wang Wang and Fu Ni at Adelaide Zoo, are set to be returned in late 2024. Hopefully we can work out a lease renewal or something but that’s already happened once and our relationship with China here is about as up and down as it is for the US.

Why are the West and USA so obsessed with pandas? I've been to the Chengdu Panda Reserve in China to see all I want and that was enough. I don't need to visit a 2nd time unless I so happen to be there again. So I never visited my own country's zoo to see the leased panda because I've already done it in its original home in China.
@@ymhktravel A lot of people don't have the opportunity to visit them in their natural habitats, so zoos are their only ways to witness one "irl".

@@ymhktravel You think the west is obsessed, most of Japan's pandas recently returned to China and their fans make a monthly pilgrimage to visit them while fans in Korea of the most handsome male black/white panda in the world not to mention the most beautiful Ai and her equally beautiful daughter Fu (who returns to China later this year, she is 3 and a chunk now) plus her absolutely adorable twins (Rui and Hui born last August/September time) put the west to shame. Mind you, a fair few of us from outside Korea (basically from the rest of the world) also follow the Bao family online so the interest seems to be universal. But did you know there are two separate species of panda (black/white and brown/white), there is only one brown/white bear in captivity (found badly injured as a baby and handed in to the local zoo), that the black/white pandas have the skull shape of a normal bear while the brown/white panda skulls are feline in shape and one has smaller teeth but a stronger bite/jaw and the other species has larger teeth but a weaker bite/jaw.
I am pretty certain Canada also has leased pandas, although it doesn't show on the highlighted map
seeing how hard it is to keep them alive, pretty sure the species wants to die out at this point.

China should have never sent any panda out. They are too precious. Given the plight of YaYa in Memphis zoo you can see that sometimes they are victims of melicious treatment too. Glad YaYa was able to return to China and happily rehabilitated. Shame on Memphis zoo.

The Chinese have figured out that foreigners love pandas, so they're a national treasures in the eyes of the Chinese just because foreigners are stupid enough to want these stupid things.
I'd assume war, as the Chinese want as many bidding chips to gain privileges with as many other countries for trade and such.

Panda only lives up to 30 years, most of foreign zoos rent them from age of 3 to 23.
A more interesting question is: (if the shoe were on the other foot) Would China have sent the Pandas back if another country had asked it to?
