Douglas mustered up the courage to have a long-overdue conversation with his wife. He knew it wouldn't be easy. Douglas and Isabel had known each other practically their whole lives. They grew up in the same neighborhood, but at different ends of the settlement. In kindergarten, Douglas used to pull Isabel's pigtails, and in school, he would play pranks on her. Isabel, on the other hand, didn't hold back either - she would hit Douglas with a textbook on his head or come up with offensive nicknames for him. Douglas never had any romantic feelings for Isabel, neither in their childhood nor during their teenage years. Isabel was always a good student, not a top achiever, but consistently performed well. Douglas would occasionally copy her homework.
During that time, Douglas was attracted to other girls. He was drawn to tall, long-legged, and slender girls, like the ones he saw on TV. When Douglas left the village to study in the city, he met a girl like that. Her name was Bianca, and she studied at the same college but in a different department. He was immediately captivated by her. She had a hold on him that he couldn't shake.
From the moment Douglas first saw Bianca in the canteen, he couldn't take his eyes off her. He admired everything about her - her laughter, the way she drank coffee, how she talked to her friends, and even the way she smoked. Beautiful, slender, and graceful - like a real supermodel!
Of course, Douglas didn't dare to hope for anything between them, so he admired her from afar. A girl like her was out of his league! She probably had many admirers.
But one day, Bianca approached him. He was standing on the college porch, waiting for a friend, when he heard a melodious voice behind him.
"Do you have a cigarette?"
Douglas turned around and was practically speechless - Bianca was stunning!
"I... I don't smoke," Douglas finally managed to say.
He regretted not having picked up the habit at that moment. It was all because of his parents' strict control and obsession with a healthy lifestyle. Who would have known that having a pack of cigarettes in his pocket would be so important to him someday?
"Too bad," Bianca shrugged.
She was about to walk away, but Douglas stopped her.
"Wait, what brand do you smoke? I'll go to the store and buy some!"
Bianca told him her favorite brand, and without wasting a second, Douglas rushed to the store across the street. He was in such a hurry, afraid that she would leave before he returned, that he risked his life by crossing the road in the wrong place. Angry drivers honked at him and shouted, but he didn't care. The only thing that mattered was getting back to Bianca as quickly as possible.
But Bianca was waiting for him. She was speaking with some girls, but when she saw Douglas approaching from afar, she said goodbye to them and stepped aside.
"Here," the guy handed her the packet.
"Thanks," Bianca said, giving her knight a charming smile, making her face even more beautiful. "And you're cool! What's your name?"
They didn't go on a date that day. Instead, they stood and chatted about various topics. Bianca smoked cigarette after cigarette, looking a bit tired or annoyed. Later in the conversation, she revealed that she had recently broken up with her boyfriend.
So happy Isobel found happiness again. Lovely story told beautifully😊

As bad as it was, Douglas leaving Isabel was a blessing in disguise. Had he not left, Isabel would not have worked as hard to do better for herself for both her own sake, and the sake of the children. It seems that Douglas didn't know what a true gem he had in Isabel until he FOOLISHLY gave her up. By the way, I loved that Douglas's mother reprimanded him for his foolishness.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Douglas destroyed his marriage with a wife who loved him, supported, bore his children, and devoted her life to him. She was always faithful to him too. He ruined a good thing by his choice alone. I feel no pity for him.

Douglas was deceived by a young girl looking for excitement.
I titled that story " THE DOG AND ITS SHADOW" Douglas was too gullible. He only sees from imaginable lusty eyes. Tall, slim, beautiful. Those were the answers to his cravings. (That was Bianca and Chandra) both of them were all for pleasures and men's wealth. They didn't care whose lives they destroy once their desires were met. Chandra herself actually asking Douglas to divorce his wife and children to live with her. Gullible Douglas accepting that decision-making. To Chandra's surprise Douglas could not make the monies in the city because not much offers in the city so she had to break up the relationship. Now Douglas doesn't smoke. He should have been strong in character to tell Bianca about her smoking for him not to encourage her far-less to go and buy cigarettes for her.
To end my summation: Isabel his wife beautiful, yes! A homely woman, so caring, a good wife who loves the husband, a good mother for the children but those things were not good for Douglas. Well he came back home with his tail between his legs. He lost the real bone and its shadow. Bravo to Isabel to what she has made of her life after that fatal blow with Gullible Douglas.

The narrator didn’t mention who he is and whether he and Isabel would be getting married although it is implied. I’m happy for Isabel who deserves her new-found happiness. ❤

May I ask just so that I understand; what value does makeup add to a woman? Isn't it just for aesthetic exterior beauty? I'm black and I've never used makeup and anyway some women look uglier with makeup than without. Men should stop looking at women as if they are their robots to do whatever they want their women to do. Men develop potbellies but I've never heard of any woman who demeaned her husband for getting fat.
When men stop looking for aesthetic beauty and start looking for the inner one they'll be happier than trying to manipulate their wives to fit unreasonable images.
