    I feel like if theaters would lower their ticket prices, movies like the ones Scorsese makes would be more sought after. But the fact that people only go to the movies now to see Disney films including Marvel, reboots and Star Wars is a reason more and more of them are being made and artsy films are being kicked to Netflix or other streaming services. People just don't want to pay $20 for a ticket unless it's a huge movie.

    • @thomasknash
      @thomasknash 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But that is part of Scorsese's (and Jodie Foster's last year) criticism is that these movies are conditioning people that you don't need to see regular, smaller movies at a theater and that they're really there for big budget spectacle movies. People are learning that the movie theater was meant for Transformers or Rise of the Jedi but not No Country for Old Men or Silence of the Lambs.
      And while I think it would be smart for theaters to lower prices, if you go by inflation they are pretty much the same price as a 1970s ticket. The bigger problem is wages haven't gone up in decades.

    There is "art" - and there is "high art."
    A wise man once said, the difference between "high art" and "art" is like comparing the painting of the Sistine Chapel and the painting of those Dogs Playing Poker. The world needs both paintings, but, one of those two paintings evokes much, much deeper - and stronger - emotions.
    The Sistine Chapel's beauty will inspire you to tears.
    The Dogs Playing Poker will laugh you tears.
    One of them is high art, and the other one is not - and there is nothing wrong with that.
    The people becoming angry - and defending superhero movies over cinema - know that their art is not of the higher form - and since they connect their ideologies to their identity, they feel like it is an attack on their intelligence. Which is just not true. Those people just prefer to stop their attention at mere entertainment.
    The world has children, and the world has adults.
    The world has comic books, and the world has literature.
    One of them is high art, and the other one is not - and there is nothing wrong with that.

      Definitely. There is also a form of "anti-elitism elitism" in the mix. Claiming to be ok with "mere entertainment", but actually wanting to pretend that there is only entertainment.

    The problem is that original content isn't dying because of blockbuster movies. The movie industry was in trouble long before cinematic universes. Take away blockbusters and the theaters will most like go away completely, not show more indies because people still aren't paying to see them. There are still way more smaller movies being made than ever before they are just going to different outlets

  • @andreapareti324
    @andreapareti324 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Guys.. There always were big blockbusters and smaller movies.. If anything, what's been missed and is maybe having a very small resurgence now (a bigger one, if you consider streaming) is mid-budget fare.
    Of course big movies get a bigger marketing campaign.. They need more money to make a profit and you gotta spend money to make money, so you can't just leave it up to chance, you gotta market them; by comparison, less streamlined fare has less of a net, so a bigger marketing campaign wouldn't change *too* much, as far as gathering appeal is concerned.
    What *does* change things is availability of said movies, but the choice small theaters make in regards to what movies they show is based on demand, so money, as well.. If small, 2-screen theaters showed The Tree of Life as much as they showed Endgame, they would go bankrupt; not every movie has the same "chances to be shown" because this is a business, but they also cost less so there's less of a risk for them, there.
    Besides, Campea pulled up some stats that show how, even screen-wise, comic-book movies specifically don't actually take *that much* more screens to other movies, even just because of the sheer amount of non-comic-book movies made every year.
    If anything, streaming is a big equalizer, in that sense, because everything gets around the same exposure, usually, and there's even too much content for people to bear.
    Now, franchise-obsession is the biggest thing that changed more significantly, this past decade or so, and the fact that, for example, Riley can't get his script made into a movie *just* because it's not part of a franchise sucks, for sure, but it's again a matter of money.. As Robert Meyer Burnett says, "It's show-business, not show-friends!"

    Josh always makes such general statements about movies as if he's seen every movie on the planet...
    I love how he gets challenged about his opinion of Scorsese movies and he can't even really say why he loves them.
    Also, a films theater run has very little to do with how good it is. There are many great films that flopped at the box office either because no one knew what it was or it wasn't accessible enough

    Yo Dorina just saying Peanut Butter Falcon has made money over 20 million dollars domestically and Jojo Rabbit has been killing it in limited release per screen averages getting a wider release each of the last 2 weeks and more theaters are getting it this weekend. Parasite is also at 101 million dollars worldwide. Technically Josh is right if you make a good enough movie word spreads and casual fans will start going, Will these make hundreds of millions no but making 5-10 times your production budget is pretty damn good and profitable

    As someone who has lived in big cities as well as small towns I have to bring up tne problem with the art house films. NONE o them ever get to any small towns. Small town family owned theaters need big block busters to stay in business. The only place the art house films have ever played are big cities.

  • @maxhocks2006

    I’m with josh. Make good movies and people will watch them. Show business is a BUSINESS!!! If there is demand for a type of movie they will get made. Nobody makes cowboy movies cuz nobody goes to see them.
    non comic book blockbusters come out all the time. Movies like ford v Ferrari or booksmart or the Irishman, or arrival.
    There’s a disconnect between what directors and actors want to be popular and what the general public actually enjoys. There’s a reason that indie movies and dramas win all the oscars, but most people don’t go to see those movies.

    • @trueaddict8733
      @trueaddict8733 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of it has to do with marketing though. Many of the indie films dont get seen because no one knows what they are, while at the same time they're being bombarded with ads for the blockbusters

    • @bumpin0
      @bumpin0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxhocks2006 You just listed Movies that were only made cause of the director and writers are big names and made the studios money in the past. You just made my point. Studios will play it safe unless the directors are self funded or the directors are big names that can force a movie to be made.

    Oh god the answer to why indie movies aren't getting attention is coz they're these massive action movies which are more fun to watch on the big screen. Ppl go to see fast and furious marvel DC transformers etc coz they know that action and sound is more fun to see in a theatre. Whereas the indie movies are more grounded and serious. Ppl already pay Hulu hbo Netflix Amazon apple soon Disney. they'll see that kinda stuff at home and not waste money and time trying to go to the cinema. Coz those movies are about the story which would be fine if they're seen at home. The marvel movies aren't pushing those indie movies out they're literally saving cinemas and the box office. Take every single big budget action movies out of the years highest box office number and see the results

    I knew this was going to happen from the get-Marvel fatigue is a real thing because it’s essentially the same movie with different titles, and people are starting to feel it; just not the fanboys/girls. Disney will not care because these types of films make them money, so they just follow where the sheep are. People are like will Joker’s random success make Disney switch things up? No, lol. Only thing that will make them change if they see a drop in revenue for the Disney/Marvel formula.

    Lol, there are 10 comic-book movies a year compared to hundreds of smaller releases, yet Martin (and 3/4 of the panel) fail to acknowledge this.
    There’s no crowding out by blockbuster movies. It’s just the audience picking what they want to see.
    Want more “artsy” films in theaters? Well go out there and bring a bunch of your friends to see them in theaters when they come out.

    Why is everyone praising Scorsese like he’s the hero cinema needs and deserves? I get that it’s his opinion, but he has not seen those movies, so he doesn’t get to say what type of movies they are and he doesn’t get to determine what’s cinema just because of who he is. Also, I’ve seen some pretty damn good writing and story-telling from these movies since 2008, but people think just because a movie has action spectacle, it can’t possibly have good writing so they don’t pay attention to the story of individual films and the overarching story connecting them. He’s clearly envious and worried about his own movies not being able to keep up with the new generation of cinema.
