The original version of this lullaby is called "Rorogwela" and it's from Solomon Islands, The oldest recording of it is that from a person named Afunakwa and was recorded in 1970 and the lyrics translate to: Young brother, young brother, be quiet You are crying, but our father has left us He has gone to the place of the dead To protect the living, to protect the orphan child.

This is Afunakwa's voice singing a lullaby from the Solomon Islands. The song is about one sibling trying to console a crying brother after both of their parents passed away.
I am almost moved to tears. My dad used to play this song on his car stereo when I was a kid. Very nostalgic feeling now. Indeed, we are all humans and need to love and tolerate one another. No matter the race, religion or ideology. Peace to the world.
Brings back memories of SBS in Australia. The original lyrics of the traditional Baegu lullaby "Rorogwela" from the Solomon Islands, which inspired Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby," along with their English translation, are as follows: **Original Lyrics:** ``` Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri Tabe ta wane initoa te ai rofia Sasi sasi ae kwa dao mata ole Rowelae e lea kwa dao mata biru I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri (repeat x 3) ``` **English Translation:** ``` Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you? Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us Just like royalty, taken care of with all the wisdom of such a place Little brother, little brother even in the gardens This lullaby continues to the different divisions of the garden From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you? Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us (repeat x 3) ``` These lyrics depict a touching scene of an older brother comforting his younger sibling, both orphans, with assurances of protection and guidance from the spirits of their ancestors.
This song is Originated from SOLOMON ISLAND by an old woman. The language is in the dialect from my region where i come from in MALAITA PROVINCE. Just to clear the Air here..
There are some instances where ‘cultural appropriation’ does some good in the world and this beautiful song is one of those instances. It’s important to recognise, however, the cultures where such wondrous things originate and they should be recognised and honoured and thanked for this gift. Their contribution to making life a little less horrible in this day and age should be respected and known. It would only ADD to its magic. I am glad someone has given this beautiful gift to a wider audience but it could have been handled better: not crediting the real originators is unacceptable. I like this clip though as it takes us around the world and back to home x

I remember when I was still a child, in the 1990s watching this play on MTV Canada. I have never forgotten since, the feeling that I had watching and hearing this that the people of the world were so beautiful and that there was so much to see beyond my small house.
in all honesty... I don't think I could or can really say it enough....this Director deserves non-stop accolades for this work...it's sheer brilliance' of how it affects one's mind and vision...and opens you up to various cultures from far off places that more than likely.. you may never go or experience... Brilliant'
I used to play this song a lot when I was a teenager. My dad would listen to it and really liked it to the point where he wanted me to burn him a cd with that song, so I did. He would always remember me with that song. He passed away a few days ago, and now I play this song, too, in his memory. I had read the lyrics but didn't think much of it back then. Now I read the lyrics again and it hits me in the heart.
My sister showed me this song in the early 2000s, before she left us in 2021 due to COVID. Listening to it now transports me back to those good moments we shared together. Each note reminds me of her laughter and the joy we experienced. Though she is no longer physically here, her essence lives on in every chord, filling my heart with cherished memories.
I remember this video being played on SBS at times in the late 90's - then we shifted back to NZ and no SBS - a real bugger, it was the best channel of all that I've ever seen
I remember our local TV station used to play this video/song every weekend. As a kid I felt a sense of positivity and tranquillity. Now I'm 40.. and when ever I hear this it brings a great wave of nostalgia. When world was kind, people were good and everything was possible
One of most beautiful songs, I’ve so far had the pleasure of hearing. The beats to the lyrics which tell a deep cutting story about 2 brothers. I’ll be having this played at my credits. 💯❤️
That song speaks to something deep inside of me, especially during this time. Praying for healing for my fellow humans of this beloved planet. I get chills every time I hear it.
The lyrics tells a story of a baby who dies from starvation. The original and complete song describes the horrors of a mother who see her baby dying. I dont think this one is a relaxing song.

This song started playing in a cafe a couple days ago, and I suddenly started crying. I was sure I knew it, but didn't remember when I had heard it before. I had completely forgotten about it, but my heart hadn't, somehow. I finally remembered it was about fifteen years ago, in a very challenging time of my life. Such a beautiful and surprising moment. Praying for all of us, and the Earth, to find peace.
Little brother, little brother, hush now, hush now You keep crying, but there's no one else to carry you No one else to care for you, we're both orphans now From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us And take care of us like royalty, with all the wisdom they'll find there Little brother, little brother even in the gardens This lullaby will reach every corner From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us Little brother, little brother, hush now, hush now You keep crying, but there's no one else to carry you No one else to care for you, we're both orphans now From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us
Dj Project Zero 8 . Thank you so much fir sharing the translation to this EPIC song. It was also translated into Spanish with the very same meaning. This makes me feel sad thinking about my Mom. Don’t know what will I do with out her.
This song is very special to me and to my older brother. I first remember hearing it when I was 6 or 7 back in the early-mid 90's sitting in the back seat of my dads jeep as we drove through the Appalachia mountains in western NC while it was foggy and raining, and I have never forgotten that moment. It was always my favorite track out of the hundreds of mix tapes my Dad would listen to, and it must have been to my older brother as he recently asked me if I remember it as I've never told him how it was special to me. Anyways this song always reminds me of my father and to me it represents the song of Earth and decency in humanity. I'm really not the sentimental type as I've gotten older and my father is still alive, but I get the strongest emotions out of this track like no other song I've listened too and I always have to try to hold back tears listening to it. If we ever send out another golden record into space like the one on the Voyager this track needs to be included.
This song as always brought me great joy. As some people below have mentioned it has an even stronger pull on me years later. The images in the video are showing how we are so far apart but so close at the same time. This is extremely powerful in 2021.
The original chant is a 'rorongwela',or lullaby,from the mountains of malaita..like most epic chants,lullabies,etc.,it is sung in a sort of 'high tongue',which has mostly gone out of use,and which makes some of the words rather hard to translate..the little that i could catch would probably go something like, "Little sibling,little sibling We are a sorry couple You and i You can cry all you want There's no-one else to rock you to sleep Nobody else will look after you We are orphans,little sibling.."
I had never heard this song before, and it appeared as the background for a video on TikTok. It touched me so deeply that I researched it, the ancestral vocals, and the concept of the video clip... in short, everything I could reach. And it's enchanting!! Music truly is life!
I woke up with this playing in my head for a couple of mornings in a row, tried to find it and couldn't, forgot the melody but then woke up with it again. I don't know why, but damn was it frustrating. So glad to have finally found it (with some help!). This is such a childhood song for me and it feels fantastic to have access to it again. Thank you so much for this absolute classic.
I remember watching this as a teenager and being quite enthralled by the imagery of these far off places. Since then I've been able to travel to quite a few of these places and every time it reminds me of watching this video all those years ago.
Lol, imagines earth is dying and all of the people on earth suddenly sing this song and people forget about war and stuff. and little by little the earth is healed. Bad english there lol.

To tell you the truth, the vocals of this song were recorded by Hugo Zemp an ethnomusicologist in the Solomon Islands around 1970. It was sung by a young women to her baby brother, because both of them were now orphan. Sadly, she was'nt even credited and the song was told to be a african pygmy song. (Srry for the bad English)
The Scarlet Cross yeah i heard the same thing ,the pygmies got all the credit ,ps. If anyone ever tries to sell u an elf with an i.q of 3 years old ,dont buy it because hes not big and hes not clever
I remember when this song came out and this had a profound effect on my soul. Like she travels the world and sees herself in others connections to their mothers and how we are all interconnected that there are many threads that tie all of humanity together and eventually we go back to the spiritual place from where we came. If only the world could overcome conflict and see and feel that we all have so much in common the world would be a better place. This video always makes me cry thinking of my mother and father who died in my 20’s many years ago. Rip to everyone Aron the world I send love and healing to all
They don't make videos and songs this good anymore and today world seems like a hostile environment compare that one... What happened to all of us. Hymn of humanity
I first heard this song in 2006 when it was used for the guy that would dance in different countries and here I am 18 years later watching the music video thanks to a Facebook reel that used the song. Crazy world man.
The music of my youth. Why no one makes such music like Deep Forest or Enigma anymore? Modern music is devoid of depth and meaning, as well as meaningful violence clips. Most of it. It’s rare nowadays.
However, the original version is from a person called Afunakwa. She was singing a lullaby to her brother after the demise of their father. She consoles him that he had gone to look after them in faraway lands
This one is with me for 20 years. So pure, so simple, so honest and thus so beautiful. It just soothes my soul. Sometimes I wonder being a 80s/90s kid have been a blessing. Here I am in 2021.

@@mefee777 And kia ora from the northern hemisphere! New Zealand will always be very special to me. Apart from its breathtaking beauty, it's a place where my dearest friend lives.
I am here
I've been listening to this song for 30yrs or more and it always bring back bitter sweet memories, such a beautiful song....
I've been searching for this song for literally DECADES! When I started this video my hopes weren't high but as soon as those first notes hit it was light lightning. Gonna listen to this on repeat for a few decades now to make up for lost time. Such a beautiful song.
TH-cam is a great thing. May it last for ever.
Eric is still producing great music as Deep Forest.
Same here😭

Real music looks like a miracle these days, what a masterpiece.
Got hold of it on an audio cassette back in 1994. I was mesmerized ❤. Still am.
I am almost moved to tears. My dad used to play this song on his car stereo when I was a kid. Very nostalgic feeling now. Indeed, we are all humans and need to love and tolerate one another. No matter the race, religion or ideology. Peace to the world.
I 😘 ve this song. It's Universal. Namaste (We are 1). Deep Forest and Enigma just take me to a different world of Love, Bliss, Positivity and Hope.❤❤❤
Brings back memories of SBS in Australia.
The original lyrics of the traditional Baegu lullaby "Rorogwela" from the Solomon Islands, which inspired Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby," along with their English translation, are as follows:
**Original Lyrics:**
```
Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu
Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau
Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri
Tabe ta wane initoa te ai rofia
Sasi sasi ae kwa dao mata ole
Rowelae e lea kwa dao mata biru
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri
Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu
Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau
Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri
(repeat x 3)
```
**English Translation:**
```
Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you?
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
Just like royalty, taken care of with all the wisdom of such a place
Little brother, little brother even in the gardens
This lullaby continues to the different divisions of the garden
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you?
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
(repeat x 3)
```
These lyrics depict a touching scene of an older brother comforting his younger sibling, both orphans, with assurances of protection and guidance from the spirits of their ancestors.
Thank you do much
This song is Originated from SOLOMON ISLAND by an old woman. The language is in the dialect from my region where i come from in MALAITA PROVINCE. Just to clear the Air here..
Junior Gaza thanks for the background!
Afunakwa was her name.
@@mindrolling24 so, lets enjoy and share and be gratefull for the vibe, sound and feel. This song might mean many different things to many different people, together we can honor the old lady that sang by reminding the world; she StilL Matters 💘
You're a lie this is not any laugage dumb ass. he made this by bit and parts of pygmy chants
My Architecture lecturer showed this song to my class the other day... thought it sounded cool so I came to revisit
Wow! This is a real blast from the past, not heard it for over 30 years! 😲👏🏻👏🏻❤️
This song has always been an absolute masterpiece.
I remember when I was still a child, in the 1990s watching this play on MTV Canada. I have never forgotten since, the feeling that I had watching and hearing this that the people of the world were so beautiful and that there was so much to see beyond my small house.
You summed it up beautifully!!!!
To me it's like the promo video for Roam by the B-52's. Same sort of theme.
😢 absolutely Agree...
I remember being a teenager when this came out...now i play this to my baby to sleep at night. He falls asleep to it everytime he hears it. ♥️♥️♥️
I also play this song to put my baby to sleep. :)
Sweet 90s. That music has a soul... Never gets old!
in all honesty... I don't think I could or can really say it enough....this Director deserves non-stop accolades for this work...it's sheer brilliance' of how it affects one's mind and vision...and opens you up to various cultures from far off places that more than likely.. you may never go or experience... Brilliant'
It’s directed by Tarsem Singh, the director of The Cell, Immortals, and Mirror Mirror :)
Somehow this music video makes me think of Wes Anderson
Had no idea there was a video for this song. Somehow heard it somewhere, bought it on cassette and played it A LOT. ❤☮🌎
SBS in the 90s was something special.
This song needs 100 million more views! It never gets old!
This takes back to when mtv actually was a music channel. Back in the 90s
Probably one of the most beautiful videos ever made.
I remember our local TV station used to play this video/song every weekend. As a kid I felt a sense of positivity and tranquillity.
Now I'm 40.. and when ever I hear this it brings a great wave of nostalgia. When world was kind, people were good and everything was possible
Are you from Kenya?
One of most beautiful songs, I’ve so far had the pleasure of hearing. The beats to the lyrics which tell a deep cutting story about 2 brothers. I’ll be having this played at my credits. 💯❤️
Loved this song from years ago its pure
That song speaks to something deep inside of me, especially during this time. Praying for healing for my fellow humans of this beloved planet. I get chills every time I hear it.
Beautiful comment. Wishing you much peace and healing.
Love your thoughtful comments thinking of others , this is a brilliant song, seems u think so tune XX
The lyrics tells a story of a baby who dies from starvation. The original and complete song describes the horrors of a mother who see her baby dying. I dont think this one is a relaxing song.

This song has comforted 2 generations of my family since it came out.

I didn’t expect this song to be so beautiful and emotional but damn, this is a masterpiece

LMFAO!!!!
Little brother, little brother, hush now, hush now
You keep crying, but there's no one else to carry you
No one else to care for you, we're both orphans now
From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us
And take care of us like royalty, with all the wisdom they'll find there
Little brother, little brother even in the gardens
This lullaby will reach every corner
From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us
Little brother, little brother, hush now, hush now
You keep crying, but there's no one else to carry you
No one else to care for you, we're both orphans now
From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us
are those the lyrics translated? how did u get them?
Shut the fuck up
Thank you if these lyrics are properly translated
Thank you!!! 😊😊
Beautiful post. Tell your dad and brother that you love them.
This song as always brought me great joy. As some people below have mentioned it has an even stronger pull on me years later. The images in the video are showing how we are so far apart but so close at the same time. This is extremely powerful in 2021.
The original chant is a 'rorongwela',or lullaby,from the mountains of malaita..like most epic chants,lullabies,etc.,it is sung in a sort of 'high tongue',which has mostly gone out of use,and which makes some of the words rather hard to translate..the little that i could catch would probably go something like,
"Little sibling,little sibling
We are a sorry couple
You and i
You can cry all you want
There's no-one else to rock you to sleep
Nobody else will look after you
We are orphans,little sibling.."
I had never heard this song before, and it appeared as the background for a video on TikTok. It touched me so deeply that I researched it, the ancestral vocals, and the concept of the video clip... in short, everything I could reach. And it's enchanting!! Music truly is life!
Now, that is ART!
Indeed! Tarsem Singh, the director won 1994 MTV Video Music Awards due to this.
@@vinayk7 He also directed "The Fall"
@@chriszanf He also directed the controversial REM's music video for Losing my Religion.

This song always bring tears to my eyes. Such a beautiful music and video!
I remember watching this as a teenager and being quite enthralled by the imagery of these far off places. Since then I've been able to travel to quite a few of these places and every time it reminds me of watching this video all those years ago.
Wow!. This music and video should be a humankind patrimony :)

Earth's last lullaby before we put it to sleep
Agreed
Remains one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard and one of the most beautiful videos i've ever seen. Both take me to a more innocent time, where things were more spiritual and beautiful. It stays in your heart, probably forever 💖
Yeh so awesome. I remember hearing this tune as a kid. Only rediscovered it today through shorts 😆. Life is good! There are positives to social media 😅.
I have been searching for this song! I haven't heard it since 1998. Lots of childhood memories for sure.
Oh - I finally found this song! It took a few years of searching - but so worth it. Just as beautiful as I remembered... So happy :)
The 90s !! Love it !! Life was so simple in those days.
Deep Forrest songs are a great way for myself to escape the bad things that are happening in this world, as i see and hear a lot of beuty in their songs, and this helps myself remember the beautiful things this world has to offer. ✌️💯💗
This kind of music is made to heal the world. Stop hating on each others, this is what our leaders want to preserve their power over us.
I've always loved this song and after I've read its lyrics it always brings me hope.

It is a Lullaby Song from the Solomons Islands and not Africa...
thank u
But it's in Bengali... do they speak Bengali there?
Maybe this song goes back hondreds or thousands of years back to africa, back to your ancestors...

Rip to everyone Aron the world I send love and healing to all
Beautiful and nostalgic song, reminiscent of a pure innocent world which is lost forever
They don't make videos and songs this good anymore and today world seems like a hostile environment compare that one... What happened to all of us. Hymn of humanity
Perfeita sua percepção 👏👏👏

ive been looking for this song since the 90s googled the specifics and i found it ive been carrying this tune around my whole life..
we will make it as a race...the human race share the same story
same case here in Kenya...
🙂
Pack Redfeather I googled guy walking on tight rope with old lady singing got it! Lol
Lauro Cordero im glad u found it...lol
I first heard this song in 2006 when it was used for the guy that would dance in different countries and here I am 18 years later watching the music video thanks to a Facebook reel that used the song. Crazy world man.
The music of my youth. Why no one makes such music like Deep Forest or Enigma anymore? Modern music is devoid of depth and meaning, as well as meaningful violence clips. Most of it. It’s rare nowadays.
However, the original version is from a person called Afunakwa. She was singing a lullaby to her brother after the demise of their father. She consoles him that he had gone to look after them in faraway lands
This brings back great memories of watching the video as a commercial on SBS (Australia)!
This one is with me for 20 years. So pure, so simple, so honest and thus so beautiful. It just soothes my soul. Sometimes I wonder being a 80s/90s kid have been a blessing. Here I am in 2021.
I think back to the best years of my youth , and a tear runs down my face😢
dont we all? 🥲
It s really Deep Forest ...🌲🌳🌲This song is Deep Forest as an ocean
Beautiful song and even more beautiful music video. Seriously, some of the best I have seen.
Man, I've been looking for this song for AGES. Thank you for posting
The old women singing at the end sounds so beautiful! Her voice! Wow💜
That is the most fantastic thing I have ever seen. Deep Forest is a big part of my life. Greatest music I have ever known.
I forgot about this song. It was 😮 me of my favorites when I was a teen in the 90’s
