Courtney one take vocals are a thing to behold, really showcases how she does not need post-processing to be awesome.
On those you can also hear her going from pitched clean toward dirty and rough metal scream within same word. Her way of doing harsh vocals is such that it allows her to slide from cleans to growls smoothly, adding more and more distortion toward the end of the phrase/word. Which often sounds awesome.
Contrast this to, say, Tatiana from Jinjer and Alissa from Arch Enemy who can switch between the two, sometimes really fast, but it's a switch, not a slide.

I'm not saying she's hasn't got ability; clearly, she has. For myself, I don't find her voice interesting - especially, her clean vocals, because I don't find anything distinguishing about them. As for Alyssa and Tati, sure, I see you're point. For myself, I find Jinjer - musically/vocally - way more interesting, because I love musical dense material, which is why SpiritBox doesn't interest me. Arch Enemy is ok; I enjoy them for their intensity; but I preferred Angela. Alyssa was much better in The Agonist.
As always, such is just my opinion and people are free to like whatever they do (I'll just wonder about you!) 😉

@@JasonSmith-lp6wg : As a metalhead I find the non-growling parts of Spiritbox be a bit too close to polished and very produced mainstream pop rock.
They do it very well and I understand that way they can gather wider audiences, but that style is not my personal go to music.
      So I hear you.

Coming from a Death Metal guy I like the contemporary side of Spiritbox, it's refreshing. Over the years Metal has gone a bit too away from melody and sticky choruses, often that style of composing being seen as gimmicky or whatever by Metal artists. However I think Metal moved so far away from that, many songs and styles became so overly complex that it made it difficult for the listener to grab onto parts of songs. It also made many artists and their songs kind of all sound the same with little uniqueness differentiating songs or artists from others, if that makes sense.
I have a new appreciation for 80s music as looking back, they were masters at writing fun, memorable songs. Imo Spiritbox kind of taps into that way of writing choruses and bits that are easy to hear and stick with you, while keeping it dark and dirty too, something I think Metal could benefit from utilizing once again, if only a little bit.
Great breakdown with some solid points. Look forward to the next!

Yeah I think as any genre progresses there will be times when the genre struggles with its own stylistic elements, and I think Spiritbox and Sleep Token and the like much like Nu Metal might well be bringing something exciting to the table. Thanks for watching my dude! :)

I'm a huge fan of Spiritbox! This song feels like it was designed to be a single off their first album (Eternal Blue) as a gateway to new fans. Personally I love the mix of melody and harsher sounds / vocals, as I think exploring different genres with metal yields interesting results I haven't heard before. If you want something a little different I'd recommend "Holy Roller", of if you want to get heavier check out "Cellar Door". "Jaded" is another good choice if you want to see where the band is headed (this song also got nominated for Grammy, if you care about things like that).

I just love in this day and age we have so much variety in metal. Bands like this and Sleep Token, you go see them live you could end up with some crazy mixes like Health who supported Sleep Token in London (also worth checking out Health). Last year I saw Baby Metal support Sabaton, love both bands for different reasons. Metal is in a great place.

I like the one take better than the studio version myself. That seems to be a lot of the comments I see as well.
Spiritbox's latest release, Ultraviolet, th-cam.com/video/tDrIBRucWxo/w-d-xo.html has no harsh vocals in it. I think it's still metal, it's all about the groove.
Unleash the Archers, Legacy - th-cam.com/video/mWuM9CkY3U8/w-d-xo.html is very melodic, but still metal and especially fuckin' metal when you listen to the whole albums storyline from Apex and continued to Abyss. UtA might be more on the theatrical side, but that's why there's sub genres from Power to Doom to Black to Prog.

Love Spiritbox and Courtney very much and absolutely love the combination of melodic and distorted vocals. She is one of my favorite vocalists in metal and she is absolutely gorgeous and very talented. One of my biggest girl crushes beside Tatiana from Jinjer for sure, I am completely in love with her voice and hair color (she makes me wanna dye my hair blue even more) 😅.
P.S. for more distorted vocals I recommend song "Holly Roller"

Metal is such a vast genre, you don't even need distorted guitars and heavy drums to do it. While I'd argue its mostly classical inspired, there's jazz/rock/pop/hophop/folk ect that can all be spun into metal to create something.. My argument would be that metal makes everything better, its a musicians genre that is a playhouse to do whatever you like in.

I like their early stuff from around 2017-2019. Check out The Beauty of Suffering, Belcarra, Trust Fall, and still my favorite song, The Mara Effect (all three parts). I think those songs are just more interesting.

    You know what, Melisa?
    YOU KNOW WHAT, MY DUDETTE?
    You need
Spiritbox "The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound"
Yes, it is a metal core symphony. 16 minutes.
But for real - it is worth every second for the experience. One friend of mine said it - stuff like this can be life-changing. And yes, I dropped a few tears because it's so good. And I tried several times to just watch the first song of the trilogy - it does not work. It doesn't. I always end up to watch the whole thing. For sure? This video made me a fan for life.
You know, why you can not forget The Mara Effect? Because "IT'S THE EFFECT OF THE MARA!" (Whoever watched it knows what I mean. 🙂)
Yes. I love Spiritbox. The early stuff even more than the later. It's raw. It's great. It is the concept of something that I wanted to be a success. I knew Courtney from her previous bands and was into Spiritbox from the first day I saw she has something new.
How do I think about the more "contemporary" style of the songs and production after they signed with Rise Records? They can handle it. It works. It makes them ready for the top 100, and that's great. Well-earned.
Yeah, I know that from my old death metal dudes. "That's core." Like - naaay, this is not even worth a discussion. But I always found it funny. Why limit yourself with rock hard definitions of genres? Doesn't make sense to me. I know people that say, that everything outside of Encyclopedia Metallica is not metal, and that their definition is the shit. I think, that's ridiculous and absurd. But hey - opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.
Have a great start into the week my dear dudette. When I saw this video, right now, Monday morning, still dark - my day already took a great turn. I sit here smiling, sipping my first coffee, smoking my first cigarette, feeling good. My friend, you made my day, again.
Best regards from this guy at the Danish border.

I think the type of metal-fans, that you refer to, are mostly anachronistic. My personal impression is, that these days, metal fans are especially open to all kinds of music and singing styles. Me personally, i just want music to not be boring and/or irrelevant. I love singers like Tatyana Schmayluk, Melissa Bony and Alissa White-Gluz who can flip between harsh and clean vocals, because it gives a nice contrast (you need dark to show the light...), also nice when bands have multiple singers like Lacuna Coil or Electric Callboy, who can share the two effects.
I think it is important to be able to appreciate when you like something, even if it comes from someone you don't (normally) like.
EDIT: Just to give a little bit of snobbyness - the best singer of all times is clearly Simone Kermes and that is a definite!

Got a couple *different* suggestions for you.
Check out Mental Cruelty- Zwielicht/Symphony of a Dying Star. Cleans, death metal, melody, got a bit of everything. The singer, Lukas Nicolai, did a one take of him singing Symphony, and its ridiculous.
A curveball is coldrain. They are a Japanese metalcore band, and they write super catchy music. Check out Cut Me or Mayday!.
Allegaeon (Uh-legion) are a technical death metal band who utilize melodic elements well. To showcase what they can do, check out Of Beasts and Worms. That song is a good showcase of what they can do.
Bad Omens are incredible, and I feel like they'd be something you'd dig. Check out Nowhere To Go off their album The Death of Peace of Mind. Good representation of everything they can be. That whole album is amazing, for what it's worth.
Lastly, my favorite band of all time Fear Factory. They are industrial metal pioneers, and one of the first bands to use distorted and clean vocals together. One of their best songs, IMO, is Fear Campaign. The video is pretty gnarly, and the lyrics are on point. "What...do...you...fear? Fear...is...your...God!!!"
    Cheers!

I think, i mentioned on one of the sleep token videos, its a certain contemporary style of melody and phrasing that has the gatekeepers up in arms with bands like this. A lot of the melodic singing in metal has roots in theatre/broadway as well as rock 'n' roll and blues, whereas theres a lot of contemporary pop and r'n'b or hiphop vocal influence in some of the more modern bands.
The instrumentation also seems heavily inspired by a lot of the 'nu metal', like Linkin Park and Slipknot, that got popular in the early 2000s as well as some of the more technical metalcore that appeared in the 2010s. A lot of metal purists arent big fan of this style of instrumentation.
I think Spiritbox are pretty good all round but the melodies and music dont interest me so much. This chorus is pretty good though.
(The funniest thing, btw, is remember the Haken thing? Metal elitists dont like Ross Jennings voice either lol)

Regarding the question of 'what does/doesn't constitute Metal' is an involved conversation which I will try to succinctly elucidate. Also, it's a conversation 30/35 years past it's prime. As someone who was there, in the early 80s, I'm just giving this conversation a context and history.
It's important to understand that Metal exists on a continuum whose origins begin with the Blues, because Blues gave to Rock it's melodic components (I do think, though, that some elements came from Jazz). Rock became Hard Rock. Bands like Led Zeppelin and early Judas Priest had obvious Blues elements. From there, Hard Rock took the energy/intensity of Punk to create Heavy Metal. Iron Maiden's debut album showcases a heavy Punk influence that isn't there on subsequent albums. From here, thanks to various influences, Heavy Metal gave - a snarling, ugly - birth to Thrash Metal.
Metallica's debut album - Kill 'Em All - is the inception of Thrash Metal and throughout the 80s Metal had a very specific sound that was the culmination of the above mentioned process. In the early 90s, this changed with bands like Nirvana, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam; Though I'm not a huge fan of Seattle/Grunge music (mostly, because this genre didn't care for the intensity of Thrash and decided to do their own thing, which, to their credit was, somewhat, interesting), at least it built upon said history. Nu Metal changed that (and don't, even, get me going on the grammatical nonsense of that name, Barbra!).
Unlike with previous Metal Genres, Nu Metal bands stripped away most/all of the melodic elements, favouring a much more reduced, simplified sound. Bands like Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park pioneered this genre. For people such as myself, we felt that Nu Metal had ruined a genre we loved by stripping it of everything that made it interesting - including talent. I call this style of music Big Sound Music, because it makes a lot of noise without being musically dense or captivating. Seriously, if Nu Metal were a sexual position, it would be the McDonald's of Missionary! (And, yes, you can quote me on that!)
Complicating this situation is Metallica's Black Album (their fifth album released 1991), because it was such a commercially driven product - and far removed from the genre they created - that people who, previously, hated 'that shit we listened to,' suddenly, declared themselves Metal Heads. In short, Metallica's Black Album made it safe to be a Metal Head; and to be a Metal Head - in the 80s - meant taking it on the chin, because Metal was not, only, looked down up, but was the subject of Congressional witch hunts seeking to blame it for a lot of societal ills. This, also, spawned the, laughable, Satanic Panic, as well as idiotic 'Investigations' by Geraldo Rivera and 60 minutes. It's not an exact correlation but the difference between being a Metal Head in the 80s vs. now is, kinda, like the difference between being a Pornstar in the 70s vs. now.
So, Metallica, the band that, previously, had little radio play or any, real, acknowledgment was being played in hockey arenas, department stores, even, elevators (fucking elevators!). It was a surreal situation. We felt betrayed; and we, most certainly, didn't consider these 'opportunistic fans' to be Metal Heads. We thought of them as the people who didn't have the balls to like Metal until Metallica made it fashionable to do so. It's, also, thought that Metallica's new sound was, in part, the underpinnings for Nu Metal, which, further annoyed us, because a lot of us (people my age) don't consider Nu Metal to be a worthy successor to what came before; and it's, also, these same, 'opportunistic fans' who loved Nu Metal, which, again, pissed us off.
All of this said, it's a conversation that happened over 30 years ago and isn't as relevant, today, as it was then. For people born post 2000, perhaps, you don't know what came before and your tastes, naturally, gravitate to what's relevant/timely to you, which is great. Like what you do and pay little heed to the echoed bellowings of dinosaurs past. We don't have to like what each other's listening to; it's not required.
Regarding Cardboard Spirit Boxed, they've, very much, in the Nu Metal lineage; and while I think it's great they're doing their thing and people enjoy it, I think their boring as fuck. There's nothing original/interesting about them; and I'm, almost, certain that's Katy Perry fronting a Boy Band. Is it Metal? Yes, but it's not for me.
Now, that said, Barbra, if you should want to listen to a truly, melodically 'shit hot' vocalist who'll grab your girls and ride your goodies for all their worth, you need to listen to Jill Janus (founding member/vocalist of Huntress). She's a classically trained Soprano Coloratura who could growl the head off a grizzly! It's like Floor Jansen, King Diamond, and Tatiana (Jinjer) had a love child together. I recommend Eight of Swords, Zenith, or The Tower.
As for gender, orientation, religion, creed, etc, these are not things of worthy consideration, because such things - save for something very specific - don't matter; and unless you can prove to me that any such things matter to guitars, drums, mics, etc., you haven't got an argument.
    Well, that was a mouthful!
    My bonny best to you!

Spiritbox has been killing lately. I do think there’s plenty of room for more melodic sounds and vocals in all of metal. I think one of the more unique takes on the melodic vocals have been from cattle decapitation. Travis Ryan might be one of the best vocalists in the genre

it depends how metal genre do you like the most no matter what which one it is. in my opinion there are both mainstream and those that are more hardcore instrumentality and same in vocals too even those that switched up in between like spirit box or jinjer etc however this topic always will be debatable by metal fans but to me it doesn't matter if it had melodic vocals because i love iron maiden a lot that's considering metal as example they had tons of catchy choirs back in the day same as their contemporary metal bands still nowadays with new gen bands.

While Spiritbox does tend to mix both harsh and clean vocals in songs, there are some songs where they have all harsh vocals and some that are all clean. Courtney is a huge fan of Beyoncé so it is no surprise that that influences Spiritbox's sound (there are people saying that there is a pop sound to Spiritbox). I'm going to suggest 2 Spiritbox songs that have all harsh vocals in them; the first song is a fan favourite Spiritbox Holy Roller (Official Music Video) th-cam.com/video/cWE0sSZ9yLc/w-d-xo.html and the second is one of my favourite songs (sadly it doesn't have a video) Spiritbox - Silk In The Strings th-cam.com/video/-TlxxvjNiBs/w-d-xo.html One other thing Spiritbox related is that they have inspired some girls and women into metal vocals, one in particular, Harper. 10-Year-Old Harper Screams "Holy Roller" and Shocks the Judges | AGT 2022 th-cam.com/video/C-TkyCwy4CU/w-d-xo.html There is a rabbit hole of a story there she has released a few singles of her own and been on stage with Courtney and Spiritbox, some metal commenters have said that her harsh vocals are better than many metal singers.

I've been enjoying the mixture of metal with unabashedly pop vocals since Periphery put out "Scarlet" back in 2012. I'm not a metal purist - to me, taking all the good shit from across various genres and combining it into one heavy/catchy mixture makes for great music when done well.

How is it that you love horror movies so much and yet you haven’t reacted to the band ICE NINE KILLS. Could you call them Horrorcore? Their songs are based upon famous slasher and classic horror films. part music theater like meatloaf, part SKA from their earlier roots and just a smattering of harmonized harsh vocals from Metalcore. Intrigued? 😮😮😮😮😮

Loved the video. Keep 'm coming, these are the opinions I keep coming back for.
As for you question, is this metal? I'd say yes and also kinda but not quite.
Pure musically, this is clearly metal. It has the drums and the groove, it has the distortion guitars, it even has a decent amount of the harsh vocals, and all of these things put it firmly into the metal category. More so than quite a few other bands that are also generally considered metal.
But metal is not just a description of the musical style. 12tone described this well in his video about what makes heavy meatal heavy. Metal has also always been a very explicit counter to the more mainstream music styles of the time. If something becomes more mainstream, it becomes less...metal. And I don't believe this is a pure gatekeeping style thing. It also seems to be a dividing line for many people who enjoy metal. Somehow in order to become more mainstream, you need to lose a certain...edge, a certain perceived heavyness. And yes, this will put a lot of things outside of "proper" metal, for lack of a better term, and into "metal pop". Like a lot of emo and nu-metal bands, but also a lot of symphonic metal, as well as the very popular Symphony & Metallica, or Electric Callboy to name a recent example. I would put this song firmly into the metal pop category.
I would say it's not a super useful distinction from a pure musical standpoint, but it is a practical distinction for many fans. As an example, many big metal fans who are also open to many other things, and not at all afraid to admit they liked Britney Spears, they still didn't like Linkin Park, specifically because of this reason. Myself included.

I'm hearing incredible metal riffs backed with transitional drum beat that tears into the chorus with THE most noteable instrument of all... the voice.. the singer... the interpreter of the track. Regarding gatekeeping, personally I get off on enjoying bands that gatekeepers tell me I can't have. Huge fan of Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Myrkur, Infant Annihilator, and as mentioned before iwrestledabearonce. I revel in my bad taste of metal! Metalhead purist tears are my sustenance!

Ha, I would not have thought that someone would recommend this one. But hell yeah.
At this time, IWABO was already on a strange way, and the development of the Spiritbox sound is already there, although that was math core IMO.
But it was Courtney and Mike doing some serious shit, and leaving the comedic part of IWABO behind.
Also a big fan of Krysta Cameron before Courtney in IWABO. And Eva Spence/Korman in Rolo Tomassi.

This is such a nonsense complaint but I wish they had a bit more attitude with how they perform. Guys all seems like the artsy type just bobbing around like they're too cool to get rowdy and watching her do her little whimsical pop dancing to a breakdown just seems silly. I wanna see some stomping, headbanging, whatever. Just kinda seems too safe(for lack of a better term)...

I think that’s totally fair. I watched the video again with my partner who was a big metalhead and he basically felt the same about the video. More so about the fact that Courtney’s face when distorting is just very neutral and he wanted more grimace which I have to agree. Good band. I think it’s totally fine to feel this way 💪

This is bland and generic in my opinion. Metalcore is the most popular genre currently for some reason in metal and it has the most metal bands making it so that's probably why there's so much generic trash. I don't think you can call this metal just because it has harsh vocals. For me metal needs to be more abrasive and raw but the production just sounds so soft, makes me sleepy. I liked production from the 90s/2000s more even if it was probably objectively worse than now.

I mean, I guess it depends what you’re saying Im jealous to, you know? Jealous of her melodic voice? Nah, mines cracking and I like it better. Jealous of her distorted voice, absolutely. Jealous of her looks, yeah she’s gorgeous! Jealous of her success, well yeah. I guess Jealous is the wrong word. I think envious is probably better. Jealously, to my mind, suggests I want her thing because I deserve it more. Envious to me is, I wish I had your thing but that I don’t have it, doesn’t mean I dont love it for you and enjoy it. Am I jealous of James Corden’s comedy career? Yes! He’s a hack with zero ability and I would do a better job. Am I envious of many things about CLP? Yes! She’s a goddess and I want to live in her brain and experience her being brilliant all the time. i think what I’m trying to say is, you’re right but also, you’re wrong depending on your definition.

Metal has pretty much always had melodic vocals tbh. Spirtibox definitely isnt anything new. Metalcore specifically is about mashing up core/hardcore genres with pop genres, youll find a lot of vocal types, rap sections, opera sections etc metalcore is somewhat vague a term but in general songs will contain; cleans, screams, breakdowns, low tuned guitars, djent sections and double kick drums.
