I agree. I don't think Eskom made people aware enough. Many people, especially 'very rural' ones, might really have thought "but the government will help us to make the changes". Not all people are, and will be, fully competent in technology. By the way, I wish my medical aid scheme will be more helpful in letting me know what I'm allowed to claim for, which doctor I should go to , etcetera.
If a promise hasn't been fulfilled in 30 years, maybe doubt the people making the promises? It costs money to clean, store and transport water. It also costs money to generate and transmit electricity. Someone who didn't know anything told desperate people it'd be free.
As far as I can recall., it was said that there would be a portion of "FREE BASIC WATER and Electricity"... Free basic units of electricity and basic free liters of water... We also got, but it was soon taken away to give to indigent and poor😅
The coding token was auto generated at any point when u do electricity purchase so instead of blaming Eskom, at this it's a sign that high numbers are not buying electricity
@ I’m not disputing the fact that it was simple to get the code, I was able to do this last year already. I’m actually considering the “zero buyers” which the government has known for many years that they exist and they know why they exist- people don’t have money and electricity is expensive. The government knew that so many people would have this problem, they could’ve used the same media they use to push other agendas to also communicate this issue better. Municipalities could’ve gotten involved, counsellors, etc. I therefore maintain that the communication was poor and they could’ve been proactive.
@ They didn’t give enough exposure and enough time to react, it’s like they are banking on many people missing the deadline. So they can make quick bank.
A lot of people in the rural areas were poorly informed. I barely understood what was happening and I live in a city. There was no emphasis on the matter as well as no emphasis on the consequences of not doing this rollover such as a 12K replacement cost.
They did not create this issue-the timestamps coded inside the meter expire every 34 years and 11 months. The chips are designed that way at the factory. Even if your meter was installed last year, the chip inside, for encryption purposes, is coded with a timestamp that starts somewhere around 1993. It works similarly to a TSM chip. After approximately 18 million minutes, the counter resets to 0, rendering your new tokens duplicates or invalid. This happens because the system recognizes the timestamp as being from the past.
The little guys always get told "Be accountable" but then never hold the big fish accountable. It's pathetic honestly. Talking about R12000 fine to a family where maybe one person gets paid a 6k salary. Where's the fine for the Taxi mafia? Where's the fine for companies that charge Eskom crazy amounts? Where's the accountability when you as a customer go and say "I wasn't at my house for a month but my bill came and its crazy" Before people start acting holier than thou with rules and all, they should take a look in the mirror. That's why I liked the old mans comments, EVERY BLACK KNOWS WHAT HE'S SAYING IS TRUE. Whether you're right or wrong, you need connections in this country.
The dude says people were scared. We were not scared, we simply didn’t know about this initiative until last minute which resulted in Eskom’s system getting overwhelmed and not issuing the change token. If I buy electricity from a bank or from the municipality office, I can’t be told I was buying from an illegal vendor. That’s absurd
You were “not aware” because you were not paying for electricity. All customers who were buying recharge tokens were automatically issued the upgrade tokens along with the recharge token a few months ago; even those who were buying from supermarkets and banks. The only ones who are complaining now are those who were effectively stealing electricity.
How will Eskom find those who don't come forward is my question. They're only talking about R12000 fine. I know of people who isn't interested in complying so how will Eskom get their addresses?
There's a lady that was speaking and saying "Yes fine lets pay but let it be reasonable". That's the main thing we should've had from this conversation, someone doesn't randomly decide "I'm gonna bridge". It's like using TH-cam, people will say if you don't want ads then you should get Premium without understanding that the ads have to first be so intrusive that you search "How to block ads". Nobody randomly wakes up and says "I wanna block ads"

I did a question about electricity,I said I'm here in the W/Cape now for the whole year from 2007 up to now so from past 4yrs when I'm going to the homeland where I grew up the electricity was working but now we have a problem bcz electricity is not working so past4yrs I bought electricity here in W/C for my home in E.C rural eria but now I couldn't find they told me I must go to Cofimvaba so in Cofimvaba by Dec.we couldn't find help and they said we are not buy electricity each&ever month when I said to them the problem the whole yr we are in W/C thats&there's no one in my home/in the house and by Dec. they couldn't help me even now so what must I do ?
I'm not sure what is not done rite, cuz I got my coding token around June when I was buying for my electricity via capitec. These who have bridged did not get much info as they are not buying, n with people not buying we are standing with high rate, Trueth be told, we did not need to go anywhere and queue cuz this auto generated during normal purchase
This Culture of constantly complaining is really annoying. How expensive was it going to be for Eskom to hire stuff that was gonna drive to people's homes for this? like she said (it is as simple as loading your electricity and we started hearing about this 8 months ago) >>> Where do people buy their electricity?
How come did Capetown finish so fast this grant business did not work in England foreigners came took all the jobs men sit at home women full in the clubs
Eskom mmonipulate the poor and you can see no political leader step up to suport the poor if the eff was not buzy with ther desember esembly they was in the streets the others means nothing
Why, people are not buying electricity, n suffer price hike as Eskom wanna try recover cost as I believe there is nothing for mahala, if u ain't paying definitely your neighbor is paying for both of you. I think it's high time we whistle blow anyone we notice they are enjoying free electricity 😂😂😂

Didn't the government say water and electricity will be free in 94?

No. They did not offer freebies.
As far as I can recall., it was said that there would be a portion of "FREE BASIC WATER and Electricity"... Free basic units of electricity and basic free liters of water... We also got, but it was soon taken away to give to indigent and poor😅
People died due to the panic caused by all this. Eskom and the government could've handled this better.
