  • The 79th Infantry Division fought throughout France, Belgium, and Germany during World War II. They landed on Utah Beach in Normandy shortly after D-Day and captured the port city of Cherbourg. After pushing through Le Mans they crossed the Seine River and moved up to the Belgian border at St Armand. The Division pressed on to Alsace-Lorraine and fought several fierce battles during Operation Nordwind near Parry and Strasbourg. Finally, after crossing the Rhine River into Germany the men were on occupation duty in Dortmund near the Ruhr River at the end of World War II.

My father was a medic in the 79th infantry. He said he landed on D-Day Plus 3. He had 3 ambulance's blown out by enemy fire from underneath him, narrowly escaping each time by mere seconds. He passed away in 1995. When I knew he was dying, and telling him I wish he had more time to live, he answered the following, and I will never forget what he said. He said, "I got to live an extra 50 years, get married and have two boys. A lot of my friends never got to do that, they never got to come home." I miss you dad, and oh what I would give to be able to spend just one more day with you. I will see you in heaven. Good by for now. Your son.

My father Robert Harper was in the 79th. 310th field artillery regiment battery C. Wounded in action 24 November 1944. He shared many stories about his experiences in the war. 3 of his 4 sons all served our country as officers in the AF and CG. He passed away in 1985 but his legacy lives on. I’m proud of him and what the 79th accomplished.

Robinson is my grandfather he loved attending the 79th Infantry reunions even though he lived out in California. Col. Robinson had a happy long life after the war. He died August 10 1994 at the age of 95.

Thank you so much for making this video! My grandfather Private Raymond Daniel Wallace of Chicago, Illinois was 315th infantry 79th division in WW2 he was believed to be the youngest to be wounded on the front in St. Lo in France. He was only 14 years old when he presented himself to the board he added 4 years to his age and he went into the army. He was awarded a Purple Heart. You can look him up on google there’s a interview by the Chicago tribune from his hospital bed. So proud to say that’s my grandfather. So grateful for all the brave men who fought may their souls rest in peace for all eternity.

There is a good chance our uncles knew each other. My great uncle, Private First Class John A Pollock, was also in the 313th infantry regiment. He was wounded at the battle of Cherbourg in June, then he was killed in action on July 12th 1944 near the French village of Saint Lo. He was only 20 years old when he paid the ultimate sacrifice. I am so proud to call him my uncle. When I was an active duty Infantry Marine, I would always think of him when I needed an internal source of motivation. It may sound corny, but when the going got tough in the Marines, I swear I could feel his spiritual presence near me, demanding that I do not quit and keep fighting like hell

From my dad: Edwin Almeida 315th Infantry Regiment
      79th Division.
Utah Beach on June 14th. The division took the fortress and port at Cherbourg before moving across Northern France into Germany.
The 79th was 300 straight days in combat until the surrender in April 1945.
He was wounded in July '44 just a few weeks after landing in Normandy. Then again in December, he spent his 22nd birthday in a field hospital before returning to the 79th.
      The Division was highly decorated.
The 315th/79th received two Presidential unit citations that the Division members still wear to this day for action they saw in Normandy.
I have a vhs tape documentary made by guys in his Regiment 20 years or so ago.

My great uncle Fred Atchison was in the 313th regiment of the 79th infantry division. He is still MIA. I have the Purple Heart that was sent to his sister , my grandmother. I also have a couple of small things like his little address book that was found where he went missing. He is also listed as being awarded the bronze star but they never received that. I hope that they can find his remains one day so I can lay him to rest properly.

My old man fought (Purple Heart, NCO field promotion...) with the 79th from Normandy straight into Nazi Germany. The 310 Field Artillery won a Presidential Unit Citation (Dad's unit) for fighting off a two week Nazi tank-led counter offensive. I must point out that my father would be outraged over rise of the alt-right fascist movement in the USA. He came back from the front dedicated to democracy, human rights and a USA free of bigotry and discrimination.

Any Chance the museum has the after action reports for the 314th? My Grandfather was with the B/714th of the 12th Armored and was attached to the 79th on January 19, probably to help out units of the 314th cut off in Drusenheim. I would really like to know more about this action "Task Force Lehman."
