  • Don’t make the same mistake I did… biker hearing loss… it was just a few months ago that I accepted that I am losing my hearing and need to start using ear protection while I ride. Shockingly I think I can actually hear my music BETTER with my ear plugs in than with them out. Below is a link to the ones I bought and love:

I was an artillery man, so I lost a lot of hearing. Always wear earplugs when riding.
When younger always wore when I went to concerts.
Hearing loss never comes back, and no matter how good hearing aids get, they don't make up for what you lost.

I've had tinnitus for over 20 years. It's at least 70db, 24/7, and I get migraines if things get to loud around me. I've worn ear plugs on my bikes almost from day 1. I need 'em, or else I get headaches.
All that is to say, I'm glad you got ear plugs you like and are using - they're a game-changer. Like you said, longer rides, especially at higher speeds, you're less fatigued when you get to your destination! It's a wonderful thing!

Don’t ride without them, even around town. Years ago my buddies all trailered back home nearly 500 miles, I wasn’t finished riding so opted to ride mine home; they thought I was crazy…. 500 miles. Lol. One buddy offered me some ear plugs, I declined (didn’t want that dudes plugs in my ears). Rode home, ears seemed to buzz a bit when I stopped for gas. Decided to drop in on my mom & dad when I got back to town and tell them about the trip. They started talking to me, all I could do was read lips! Scared the crap out of me, thought I’d gone deaf just like that. A day, day and a half later, my hearing was back to normal, but never again have I ridden without them. My hearing isn’t the best anymore anyway, but I always carry a few Mack’s ear plugs (Target/Walgreens) in my jacket pocket. I’d twist up and drop in my ears, they worked great. And it’s true! You are more refreshed and less tired at the end of the day wearing them, no joke.

So few people know that even JUST THE WIND NOISE at highway speeds is enough to cause hearing loss. Even in a full face helmet. I wear ear plugs whenever I ride, and I find that it evens everything out perfectly. I can hear my pipes, traffic, and my Bluetooth audio in my helmet all pretty equally. It's perfect.

Gotta protect them ears. When i first got out of the Army got into my first trucking job, i was making crap money, and lived 35 miles away. Couldn't afford to run my thirsty ass pickup every day, so i rode my Sportster as much as i could.
The one thing i noticed, it wasnt so much the loud exhaust, but the wind slapping into my ears. Half head helmet and no windshield on the bike meant i was getting it with alot of wind doing 70mph plus on the Interstate. I eventually pulled out an old pair of my ear plugs, and havent looked back. World of difference. Now that i drive for a different company, and live in a different area, im not on the Interstate nearly as much. At mostly 60mph, ive found a good pair of ear buds help alot with the wind noise, and i get my tunes.

That's real good stuff Monkey and most guys don't realize it until it's too late. Even worse than the hearing loss is you are also damaging your inner ear which can result in permanent ringing in your ears (tinnitus). It's one of the worse things you can imagine especially if it's bad. I deal with it at a moderate level. Mine is not due to loud pipes though but another trauma I experienced when I was younger. I love loud pipes myself but unfortunately I have to keep mine at a moderate level of not being too loud so I do not cause anymore hearing damage. I hate wearing earplugs but to each his own.

I am 65 now and severely hearing impaired. Loud music, loud cars, loud, military, equipment, loud motorcycles, two ex wives, and my own ignorance is the reason why. You lose your hearing so gradually that you don't notice or I didn't any way. I have to wear hearing aids in both ears now. If I didn't, I could not pass my DOT physical to continue being a professional trucker. I have earbuds that are similar to yours that I wear when I'm riding. I do not wear my hearing aids when riding it is too loud for them. I wish I would have known to protect my hearing better when I was younger. I still enjoy my music cranked up a little bit. I still love the roar of a V8 engine. I still love the sound of a well tuned Vtwin when you twist that throttle. My 2015 Ultra is Stage 1.75.

S&S Sidewinder full 2 into 1 exhaust system

I've been riding for 50 years on shovel heads with drag pipes and loved every minute of it, never wearing ear plugs because it would block out that beautiful sound that we all enjoy. The same with drag races and stock car races. I took a 27 year hiatus from riding until 2020 when I bought my Breakout. I was wearing a half helmet and on the way home, the noise was horrendous, not from the pipes but from the wind. I wondered how in the world I ever rode all these years with all that noise. I started looking for ear plugs and found some called Ear Peace. They are very soft and comfortable and they come in sets of three in case you lose one and they come with three filters so you can adjust the sound to your liking. I don't use them around town but if I hit the highway, they're the first piece of gear I pull out. I can still hear conversations with them in and the bike actually sounds better with ear plugs as crazy as that sounds. Riding, drag races, stock car races it's earplugs for me from here on out. Thanks for the PSA, brother and my best to you and the family.

Back in the early 90s I was razzing a buddy about earplugs on his softail custom. He told me he could gain about 15 to 20 mph in speed wearing them. I called bullshit, but later that summer I tried them with my straight piped shovelhead. I was hooked! I don't think I was gaining that much speed, but I found the ride more comfortable and less tiresome than without them, to the point that I could ride an extra 100 to 150 miles in a day. I always wear them on the shovel now, but not so much on my ultra. If the wind is really strong then I will wear them on my ultra but not very often

Yup, I feel ya. In my misspent youth I've stood to close to the speakers at a lot of live local concerts and my hearing has paid the price. I haven't heard (no pun) of eargasm before but have plugs that are similar that I use for all activities that require hearing protection.

Wind alone will harm your ears... I ride with a 3\4 and full face helmet to protect my ears. I am 58. Your hearing declines as you get older. It is a fact of life. I used to wear ear plugs at concerts so I could eliminate the excessive loudness and also reverberation. Ear plugs are magical :-)

Ive ridden in a set ear plugs that are made for shooting for about 5 years now. It has some special core that blocks loud heavy percussion forces but allows softer mid pitched tones through freely. Heavy deep tone like the report of firearms, or in this use case the loud heavy tones of bike exhaust. They work really well and I can still hear.

@@timothyvotaw7517 I've owned a couple sets but currently Safariland impulse pro. They allow most sounds through only blocking about 16dbs but an especially loud pressure wave hits them then the center core closes and they block 33dbs. I've owned better ones but I lost them and don't remember the name. Motopro maybe?

I wear the SureFire EP5's when I ride. Not every trip around town, but absolutely every trip where I'm getting up to highway speeds. My bike isn't loud, so it's mostly wind noise I'm trying to restrict. It's not worth the long term issues. I normally keep a spare set in my tail bag too.

I've been riding with some sort of earplugs for a while. The wind noise and the loudness of the pipes and all of that well...noise...is blocked out. I can still hear my pipes and they sound better, my music sounds clearer, and the ride is better. Of course, there are those who say, "Just drive a car!! Gotta hear the pipes and the wind!! It's part of being a biker!!!" Well, yeah, but at the end of the day I'd rather hear my grandkids laugh than my pipes roar, so if I can keep as much of my hearing as possible, I'll take it. I've been on the fence about the eargasms and when I'm ready to order again, I'll give those a shot.

I don't use plugs with my full face lid with the Cardo Packtalk, but when I ride with the half helmet I use the Radians molded plugs from Amazon. Super comfortable. I have tinnitus from too many metal concerts and shooting guns with no plugs (stupid for sure), but for me, though my pipes are plenty loud, it's more the wind beating on my ears than anything. 👍🏼

I was gonna ask if these rat plugs would work instead a full face/modular helmet with a comms system(I have the Senna)!
I bought some moldable Axial plugs and they hurt my ears from the pressure of the modular helmet against the plugs kinda just rubbing my outer ear tissue between the plugs and helmet!!!

My ear canals don't fit well with commercial plugs. Yes, I've tried them all. (My wife actually uses the Eargasm for concerts and she loves them.)
My solution was to visit an Audiologist and have custom plugs made. I got them with a filter so that I can hear everything perfectly, just 25db quieter.
I've worn them for 1000 mile Iron Butt rides and in all kinds of weather. Custom made plugs that are sized for YOU are absolutely the way to go if you have trouble finding commercial plugs that fit.

Put V&H dresser duals with CFR's on recently. Going from stock to that, my goodness what a difference. If I ride an hour without earplugs now my ears ring for the next 24 hours.
True about the stereo sounding more clear with earplugs in.
At work they stock 3M Tri Flange ear plugs, look just like yours without the hole in center. Still work great, can hear what I want to without the high of sounds as you said.
Since work tests my hearing and make a big deal if I have a shift in my hearing I let them sponsor my earplugs 😂
