Fyi Nintendo users- this game is terrific. And you're all thinking 'Looks like Sonic'. Well the creator was in fact making a fan-made, retro sonic game to please old-skool fans of the genre, but the game was turning out so good that a Deviant Art artist offered to design new characters. The rest is history, but I played this masterpiece on Steam 2 years ago and I'd highly recommend.

The DA Artist didn't design those characters... She CREATED them (well, only Lilac, Carol and Milla). Torque and Spade were created by the person who originally created the game itself.
It's sad how many people are calling this a Sonic ripoff. The game was merely inspired by Sonic. The game is actually really awesome in more ways than one, and I encourage everyone to give it a chance. You may be surprised ^^

It's basically Sega Genesis Platformers: The Game, and I mean that in a positive way. Think how Shovel Knight took a lot of its cues from NES classics, and that's basically how Freedom Planet does things with Genesis ones! It's a great game!
Bean1227 I agree, I'd like to see more games like this. There are a lot of throwback styles that get used that are similar to Nintendo platformers, but you don't see this genre as anything but "Sonic" when it could (and should) probably just be its own subgenre of platformer. "Doom clones" turned into the FPS genre, but we're still calling these "Sonic clones." I think that just means we need more bouncy multi-path fast platformers. They don't *need* animal characters either, they could be, like, ninjas or something.
the thing about shovel knight is that it takes inspiration from different nes games/franchises and combines it all for the ultimate NES feel, this only takes inspiration from one particular franchise and that's why most people label it as some sort of sonic knock-off

This is a good game trust me. It's better than 90% of sonic games out there. You can finish the game within 3-5 hours but my play time is 35 hours. It has high replayable values, and they are coming out with the second game next summer which looks amazing. I strongly recommend checking this game out
Looking forward to the sequel. It's getting additional challenge modes which looks like loads of fun and the characters are fun to play as (based off the demo i played on Steam)

I just finished the first game yesterday and played the demo for Freedom Planet 2 and Freedom Planet 2 was announced for Nintendo Switch and is releasing on April 4th, 2024. I! LOVE! THIS! GAME! SERIES! First game is tough but has a casual mode (and I needed it to beat the game). If you make it to sequel, I can confirm that the gameplay from 2 is MUCH smoother, and has optional difficulties/perks to make gameplay easier or harder (like an auto-guard and resource magnet), a blink ability to avoid damage temporarily, and a lot of new moves, hub locations, a world map, and 4 playable characters. HOWEVER, you'll still love the original as long as you keep one thing in mind. Treat this as its own game. NOT another Sonic game. Freedom Planet throws a LOT of enemies at you, so don't fall back on too many habits from the Sonic games. Blaze your own path, look around if you get stuck, change characters if you need to or check a Video Guide. It's a fantastic series with fun bosses, unlockable abilities and some mean villains...but take it at your own pace and enjoy the ride. Hope GalaxyTrail makes a Freedom Planet 3 someday. And if the developers from GalaxyTrail every read this, I have to say this....THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
At first i thought this was a Sonic game, but this game pretty much blow my spectations away. It changed to become something more unique and fixed the problems i had whit the Sonic franchise. The game is just wonderful and it's developers even more

I bet the only Genesis platformers most of the commenters played are the Sonic games. Because FP takes heavy heavy inspiration from games like Gunstar Heroes, Rocket Knight, and Ristar as well. Like how Shovel Knight does this with the NES games.

from what i heard this game STARTED as a Sonic fan game but then they decided to make their own IP. I've beat it on PC and i can say it's a fantastic platformer, similar to Sonic but different enough to be it's own thing.

I bought it twice digital (PC and Switch) and bought it again physical on Switch. Honestly, its better than Sonic 1-3K to me and I played those games for over 200+ hours from 1991-1998
JJSponge120 The game actually plays quite a bit differently from sonic. One example is that you can walk past enemies without taking damage. You only take damage from actual enemy attacks which makes a big difference in the way you play. There are various other small but important changes that separate this game from 2D sonic. On top of that, this game was made before Mania, so Sega hadn't made a 2D sonic game since Sonic 4 Part 2 in 2012, which was very bad btw.

There's a difference between inspired and copy-pasting. Yes, this game has similar elements, but that doesn't mean its a clone. You can say that about just about every platformer, can't you? But that's just your opinion. If you think of it nothing more than a clone and don't want it, just don't buy it.

For the people that think this is just a Sonic clone/ripoff, I want to point out that two things *vastly* distinguish Freedom Planet from Sonic. One, the attack button. It is very different to kill enemies by attacking them with three or four different abilities than it is to just jump (or speed dash) on them. It makes combat a lot more interesting and dynamic, especially the bosses. Two, you don't actually take damage from just touching an enemy. They need to actually be attacking you to hurt you. This may not look like much, but the gameplay is very different, and (in my opinion) in a good way.
Well, yes. There are more differences than those two. I pointed those out because, in the midst of gameplay, those are the two aspects that really stand out to me. A trailer does not necessarily convey that as strongly as they actually are while playing the game.

I'm so happy for the developer. I remember when this was entered in SAGE and it was literally just a sonic fan game, but he's really pushed for this game to be it's own thing and even have it on steam and the switch.
Awesome, I highly recommend this one guys, if you don't have a switch its also on steam, ps4 and Wii u. All versions are identical at this point. (The wii u one use to behind but it was patched to match all ports)
I've never heard about this game until right now and you can tell how inspired the developers are by Sonic games. It looks really cool and different than what Sonic games offer.
Knee jerk comments are funny. It's not Sonic, you can't play it anything like Sonic because it doesn't share any of the mechanics. Lilac can dash in the air and bounce off walls, double jump with a hover, kick and stomp kick to do a lot of damage or get boosted speed on hills Carol claws enemies or roll through them while being able to double her move set with a motorcycle. Mila can hover jump for higher air, use a shield to reflect attacks, throw big murder cubes and use the cubes as a short range blast. Characters can attack and special attack, parry enemy attacks and have life bars. If that sounds like Sonic to you, you've been playing a game different from everyone else. I guess Donkey Kong is the same as Sonic since he can roll around and into enemies right?
This game is amazing. Don't doubt it please. This is coming from someone who's play Sonic nearly his whole life...aka me. TRUST ME when I say this...this game may have SOME parts that look like Sonic but that's not it at all...it's just inspiration. 10/10 would play again! Try it out! You'll love it! Fp2 will not be out until early 2019. I think it is ok for them to port FP to the Switch to learn about the system. FP2 will probably release on the same date for every console including the Switch. And as shown in the past, this type of games will sell more copies on the Switch then any other platforms combined
Depends on your Taste. If you want Better Graphics and a More In-Depth Story with Great Voice Acting, Get Freedom Planet. If you want a more Fast-Paced Action Game with none of the Complications, Sonic Mania is the one to get.
Cool Loser both SM and FP do things greatly and succeed in being the game they were going for there similar but different so it depends on taste really
Photo Nerd SEGA gave their full permission to make this game back when it actually was a Sonic fan game. Since then the game has entirely unique assets and a unique set of characters and story. Oc stands for "original character". mario is an oc. Deviant art has some amazing artists on the platform. It really sucks to see this game so disrespected. I fully support freedom planet and its sequel to come this year and it's anything but a sonic clone.

from what i heard this game STARTED as a Sonic fan game but then they decided to make their own IP. I've beat it on PC and i can say it's a fantastic platformer, similar to Sonic but different enough to be it's own thing.
You're seriously missing out on this game if you just pass it off as "some sonic clone."

I bought it twice digital (PC and Switch) and bought it again physical on Switch. Honestly, its better than Sonic 1-3K to me and I played those games for over 200+ hours from 1991-1998

SEGA actually gave their express blessing to the developer to make this game.
JJSponge120 The game actually plays quite a bit differently from sonic.
One example is that you can walk past enemies without taking damage. You only take damage from actual enemy attacks which makes a big difference in the way you play.
There are various other small but important changes that separate this game from 2D sonic.
On top of that, this game was made before Mania, so Sega hadn't made a 2D sonic game since Sonic 4 Part 2 in 2012, which was very bad btw.
I love how people are saying this is a rip off of Sonic and people using Alpharad's quotes.
This game WAS inspired by Sonic not a copy. Sega themselves supported the creators of this game. This is coming from a sane Sonic fan. Also Mania was cool but not that AMAZING everyone says it is
Yeah I don’t think Mania is the best Sonic game since I still prefer SA2, Generations, Heroes, and Sonic 3. I still think Mania deserves a lot of praise since it was 15x better than Sonic Teams new game at the time

There's a difference between inspired and copy-pasting. Yes, this game has similar elements, but that doesn't mean its a clone. You can say that about just about every platformer, can't you? But that's just your opinion. If you think of it nothing more than a clone and don't want it, just don't buy it.

For the people that think this is just a Sonic clone/ripoff, I want to point out that two things *vastly* distinguish Freedom Planet from Sonic. One, the attack button. It is very different to kill enemies by attacking them with three or four different abilities than it is to just jump (or speed dash) on them. It makes combat a lot more interesting and dynamic, especially the bosses. Two, you don't actually take damage from just touching an enemy. They need to actually be attacking you to hurt you. This may not look like much, but the gameplay is very different, and (in my opinion) in a good way.
Well, yes. There are more differences than those two. I pointed those out because, in the midst of gameplay, those are the two aspects that really stand out to me. A trailer does not necessarily convey that as strongly as they actually are while playing the game.

I'm so happy for the developer. I remember when this was entered in SAGE and it was literally just a sonic fan game, but he's really pushed for this game to be it's own thing and even have it on steam and the switch.

Awesome, I highly recommend this one guys, if you don't have a switch its also on steam, ps4 and Wii u. All versions are identical at this point. (The wii u one use to behind but it was patched to match all ports)

I've never heard about this game until right now and you can tell how inspired the developers are by Sonic games. It looks really cool and different than what Sonic games offer.
This is actually a fantastic game. Ignore the fact it looks like a furry sonic game and just play it. The best parts are the bosses. Creative.

Knee jerk comments are funny. It's not Sonic, you can't play it anything like Sonic because it doesn't share any of the mechanics.
Lilac can dash in the air and bounce off walls, double jump with a hover, kick and stomp kick to do a lot of damage or get boosted speed on hills
Carol claws enemies or roll through them while being able to double her move set with a motorcycle.
Mila can hover jump for higher air, use a shield to reflect attacks, throw big murder cubes and use the cubes as a short range blast.
Characters can attack and special attack, parry enemy attacks and have life bars. If that sounds like Sonic to you, you've been playing a game different from everyone else. I guess Donkey Kong is the same as Sonic since he can roll around and into enemies right?
This game is amazing. Don't doubt it please. This is coming from someone who's play Sonic nearly his whole life...aka me. TRUST ME when I say this...this game may have SOME parts that look like Sonic but that's not it at all...it's just inspiration. 10/10 would play again! Try it out! You'll love it! U-unless you don't...then uh...whatever...but I can assure more then likely you'll find it pretty fun. Ok bye!

It's very likely it will come to the switch since unity has a switch exporter.
Fp2 will not be out until early 2019. I think it is ok for them to port FP to the Switch to learn about the system. FP2 will probably release on the same date for every console including the Switch. And as shown in the past, this type of games will sell more copies on the Switch then any other platforms combined

Depends on your Taste. If you want Better Graphics and a More In-Depth Story with Great Voice Acting, Get Freedom Planet. If you want a more Fast-Paced Action Game with none of the Complications, Sonic Mania is the one to get.
Cool Loser both SM and FP do things greatly and succeed in being the game they were going for there similar but different so it depends on taste really

Photo Nerd SEGA gave their full permission to make this game back when it actually was a Sonic fan game. Since then the game has entirely unique assets and a unique set of characters and story. I’m not sure what your beef with GalaxyTrail is but I’m gonna suggest you stop lying about this game. It’s pretty childish.
