Just returned from a late evening walk here in central europe during one of those saharan dust wave seasons. I's a cloudy day but l could see the moon shine pretty clearly, with the yellow tint it immediately reminded me of the cover art of this masterpiece, gotta put it on again tonight l guess.
I have immense respect for this album. This is in my view, the first authentic black metal album, more inspirational than Under the Sign of the Black Mark, but somehow doesn't get the love it deserves.
I prefer this one to Black Mark and self titled. For me it kinda goes like, BFD, Return, then Black Mark for top 3. Have a soft spot for Hammerheart as well
I know everyones taste is different but the statement that "The Return..." is more inspirational then "Under the Sign..." is absolutely beyond me. The whole atmosphere on "Under the Sign..." is so dark and almost cineastic while "The Return..." is basically raw black metal with punk and Motörhead influences. The lyrics on the first two albums are more tongue in cheek teenager satanism while "Under The Sign..." has all these medievil athmosphere and almost poetic lyrics. Some songs on Under The Sign have a structure and dramaturgy that resemble the lyrics - for instance "Enter The Eternal Fire" its almost like a movie inside the listeners head. And the synth lines and intros on "Under The Sign..." create this eighties horror movie athmosphere that makes it unlike any other BM album.

I think the production is more murky and that's why it sounds more evil in some wayss. the drums leave a lot to be desired with the obvious mistakes but overall I think it's more evil than Under the Sign which I love as well

I grew up in the mid 80's listening to this album which was released in Canada on Banzai Records ... I love the first 5 albums most from Quorthon but this one has always been my favorite....

He created and launched Black Metal with his first three LPs recorded in a garage, he actually wrote and played the songs alone, because the band members were only on the album cover indicated. As he said: we just are a studioproject. "Ace" was a genius full of wild ideas, but at the same time he was one of the world's greatest illusionists. Rest in Peace!

I'm trying to think of how many metal vocalists back in the mid 80s did harsh growls like Quorthon. Jeff Becerra, Tom Angelripper, Mille Petrozza, Schmier, still, I think Quorthon's style was nastier and more demonic than all of them!!!
A masterpiece album from start to finish this one is the best Bathory record ever for me changed my mind this one has more black metal feels than their other two and the later album Blood Fire Death.

Bathory was Black, Thrash and Viking Metal. Interestingly enough, the sub genres did do a lot of us a big favor, by allowing us to avoid certain genres altogether. Like Deathcore and Metalcore. I hate death/metal core break downs. And pretty much every band that fits in the ( We write our songs around slow, overly exaggerated breakdowns) all fit into those categories lol. The best metal album ever!! past present and future. His others were ok,but this is sublime.. it's like the genius and crazy Mozart was reborn in this masterpiece in the form of Bathory. Reap of evil-return of darkness..is as brilliant as Mozart Requiem (doesn't matter if he didn't write it all) .. only genius can put it on paper and make it work.
Bathory wrote itself tragedy play in this one.The whole album is besieged by somber lifeless fields where the mistery of night dwelling. So,it is an album made by Bathory within of its trajetory and time. If there was the possibility to remake that all the obscurity inside could be lost.
Totally influenced by Venom,Bathory made an excellent album,so good as their first work,"Bathory ".Better production and wonderful songs turned it into a classic of Black Metal. Bang your head!
This is a great album for sure and had a great influence in the 2nd wave of Black Metal BUT.. The absolute Norwegian black metal sound is represented in the next album "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" in my opinion. "Under.." is the 1st Norwegian black metal album created by a Swedish guy called "Quorthon". Bathory rules!

Quorthon's style was quite unique til 87/88 when other bands started playing actual black metal influenced by Bathory anyway

The best metal album ever!! past present and future. His others were ok,but this is sublime.. it's like the genius and crazy Mozart was reborn in this masterpiece in the form of Bathory. Reap of evil-return of darkness..is as brilliant as Mozart Requiem (doesn't matter if he didn't write it all) .. only genius can put it on paper and make it work.

Bathory wrote itself tragedy play in this one.The whole album is besieged by somber lifeless fields where the mistery of night dwelling.
So,it is an album made by Bathory within of its trajetory and time.
If there was the possibility to remake that all the obscurity inside could be lost.
Totally influenced by Venom,Bathory made an excellent album,so good as their first work,"Bathory ".Better production and wonderful songs turned it into a classic of Black Metal. Bang your head!

This is a great album for sure and had a great influence in the 2nd wave of Black Metal BUT..
The absolute Norwegian black metal sound is represented in the next album "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" in my opinion. "Under.." is the 1st Norwegian black metal album created by a Swedish guy called "Quorthon".
