One nice thing about areas like this back in the day is that they were more family oriented with family-friendly prices. Everything is so fancy and expensive in San Diego now.
My dad and mom used to take us to Felippe's for the bread, mortadella and provolone, Italian cookies and almond candy. We would then go to the airport and look through the chain link fence at the airplanes landing. Fun!

35 years was a long wait, but Little Italy has become the jewel in San Diego’s crown these days.

Filippe’s is the only place I will order pizza from, and I have to drive from Orange County. It’s that good.
You just described any given Saturday for us as kids. Those were the days.
