The "How many fingers am I holding up" gag is one you need to have seen the TV series to understand. Kirk is making a traditional Vulcan hand symbol.
Also, yeah, they re-cast Saavik between films.

When I saw this in the theater when it came out.. I cried when the Enterprise was blown up... The Enterprise at this point is not just a ship, but is also a character in the show, the hero ship. We lost a dear friend that day.

True! The Enterprise is as much a character as is any of the crew. Good sci-fi spaceships are like that. The Jupiter 2 from Lost In Space, the Millennium Falcon, the Serenity in Firefly. As fans we love these ships & wish we could board them. We wish they were ours & we were on our own space adventures. I also saw this movie originally in the theater & I was almost moved to tears when the Enterprise was destroyed. I sat there with my mouth hanging open, wide-eyed. I was always proudly a sci-fi nerd. I make no apologies. These are the stories that stir our hearts.

To learn a little bit more about the Vulcans, you can watch the original series episodes "Journey to Babel" and "Amok Time". They have emotions, but because of their warlike past, which almost led to their destruction, they have suppressed their emotions in favor of letting logic govern their lives. This gives the impression that they have no emotions to many. But they have them and feel them strongly and it takes years of training and discipline to suppress them. Pon Farr is the Vucan mating cycle, Vulcans return home to mate every seven years or die.

Every time I watch the end, when Kirk and the crew are so happy that Spock is alive, and the original Star Trek theme starts playing, I get emotional because of the passing of Leonard Nimoy back in 2015, and every time I watch that scene, I always think Leonard, too, is alive. May Leonard rest in peace.

RE the title: When planning the film, they knew that there was no way they could NOT bring Spock back. Audiences would have rioted if they went through the whole film only to say "Sorry folks, we couldn't find him!" So Spock's return in this film was always a foregone conclusion. That's actually why they killed Enterprise in this film. Since they couldn't really do much with the audience's expectations about Spock's return, the destruction of Enterprise was meant to be the "gotcha" moment. So of course, the marketing team plastered the shot of Enterprise blowing up right in the trailer.
The first look at Excelsior was originally going to be set up in Star Trek II. A cut line of dialogue reveals that Sulu was due to take command of her in three months (it happens during the scene where Sulu is piloting the shuttle up to Enterprise at the beginning). It's not entirely clear why the dialogue was removed, though it WAS filmed, and it explains why Sulu was so fascinated with Excelsior. Sulu not receiving the command could be explained by his role in the events of this film.
The redheaded woman who sees Enterprise entering Space Dock and shakes her head upon seeing the damage was played by Grace Lee Whitney, who is most famous for playing Yeoman Janice Rand in several early episodes of the Original Series. Rand was actually being set up as a major character, and was meant to be in a long-term will they/won't they relationship with Kirk. In fact, she actually appeared in more of the early promotional materials than Spock and McCoy! However, for a number of reasons Whitney was fired from the show (it's...complicated. Whitney had substance abuse problems at the time which had long been claimed as the contributing factor. Later in life, Whitney revealed she escaped a sexually assault by an executive on the show, though they've never been identified, so may have been fired as retaliation for her resistance). She reprised her role as Rand in The Motion Picture, Star Trek IV, and Star Trek VI. Her character here is never named, but most fans headcanon that it's Rand because of the knowing smirk and head-shake when she sees the damage to Enterprise.
When it came time for this film to enter production, Kirstie Alley had begun developing the ego that would define much of her career over the next twenty years or so. She was playing a supporting role, but demanded lead actress money. So the simply solution was to simply recast her. Robin Curtis took over the role for this film. Sadly, her version of Saavik lacked Alley's nuance, and most fans agree that Alley's portrayal was superior.
Sarek is played by Mark Lenard, who is quite significant in Star Trek lore. Sarek's first appearance in the Original Series was to play the first Romulan we ever saw on-screen, in the first season episode Balance of Terror, what is widely hailed as one of the best episodes in the entire franchise. He later played Sarek in the episode Journey to Babel, reprising the role here, and in Star Trek IV, VI, and two episodes of The Next Generation. He also played the Klingon commander in The Motion Picture. This makes Lenard the only actor to appear as all three of the "main" Star Trek aliens.
You apparently didn't notice that Kruge was played by Christopher Lloyd, AKA, Doc Brown. While the Klingons were historically antagonists, there was always sort of a Cold War flavor. It wasn't until Kruge that they truly became VILLAINS. Another Klingon (the sole survivor of Kruge's crew at the end) is played by John Laroquette.
The destruct sequence given in the film was also the same destruct code used in an episode of the Original Series.
It really can't be said just how much of an impact the destruction of Enterprise had on the fanbase. She was as much a character as Spock. People CRIED when Enterprise "died."

Did you notice Leonard Nimoy was not listed among the cast in the opening credits (nor, for that matter, on posters)? This was to keep the mystery going that maybe he'd *not* be found.
All the things they didn't explain fans already know from the 79 episodes of the TV series, such as the split-finger Vulcan greeting, mind-melds, Spock's father (and mother), the 7-year mating cycle, Klingons, all of it..

To understand some of the humor from McCoy about Spock, you would have to watched the original series. Those two were always bickering at one another. You saw a bit of it in The Wrath of Kahn in Kirk's quarters while they were debating about Genesis. His line about that "Green-blooded son of a bitch" in the prison cell was his frustration at Spock putting him in that situation. And that scene where he was talking to Spock about how much he missed him was him opening up to Spock about his feelings for him.

Vulcans really aren't huggers. But, yeah, this was a movie with a foregone conclusion. You can't have "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock", with the full cast BUT Leonard Nimoy credited as actors, but Nimoy credited as the director, then after 90 to 105 minutes later, have Admiral Kirk turn to the camera and say, "Sorry guys, we didn't find him".
It is so weird how far back this was, though. I was seven years old, this was the third movie, arguably only the 83rd 'episode' of Star Trek in live-action, and counting the animated series, not much more than the hundredth thing seen from Trek altogether. To think that we've had 3 more movies from these people, 178 episodes and 4 movies of TNG, 176 episodes of DS9, 172 of Voyager, 98 of Enterprise, 3 movies with Chris Pine as Kirk, 45 of Discovery, 20 of Picard, 10 of Strange New Worlds, closing in on 30 of Lower Decks, 10 of Prodigy, and the last five things I've said (maybe six!) are _"and still counting..."_

    1. Leonard Nimoy had grown tired of playing Spock and was glad he was taken out. He agreed to continue only if he could direct. He directed this and IV.
    2. Christopher Lloyd plays a great bad guy.
    3. This movie's biggest problem is that "The Wrath of Khan" set the bar too high.

From the story I read, Nimoy only agreed to do Wrath of Khan if he was killed off, but at the wrap party he was heard to say "I'm looking forward to the next movie," so they had to kludge together a way to bring Spock back.
#4 is titled The Voyage Home, and is a lovely movie.

@@Caseytify This. Nimoy came back because he had so much fun making Wrath of Khan. Nimoy had grown tired of the character, particularly the typcasting and association where it started to become harder for him to find other roles, (he DID make a nice career for himself as a voice actor outside of Star Trek) but the story and character development of II, along with his enjoyment of the production, reignited his passion for the role.

    • @DanSolo871
      @DanSolo871 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Kirstie Alley opted not to do ST:III as she didn't want to limit her acting roles. So Robin Curtis filled in for III & IV. Saavik was written into the script of ST:VI, with the hopes of recasting Kirstie Alley in the role, but it wasn't meant to be and they created Valeris for that movie.
Lloyd put on the perfect performance to mold the roles of future Klingons in TNG and subsequent ST series.
      John Laroquette plays Maltz.
There are so many flaws in this storyline, but it is enjoyable and nice bridge between Khan and Voyage home.

Star WARS is more of an action movie in space, set in a made up galaxy, that follows a story-line throughout the series (with INCREDIBLE special effects, quick paced, truly epic); A MUST. An I KNOW you'll love it. We all got hooked in the very first 10 minutes of the first movie in 1977, and we've been hooked ever since. Star TREK movies are slower, character driven, naval-battleships in space, set in a fictional future in earth's history. Each film is usually a self-contained story, but has TONS of history when you consider all the episodes of the many shows they produced throughout the years (since the mid 1960's). I'm a big fan of both, and am THRILLED that you've taken interest in them. My God woman, are you in for a treat... :)

Ponn Far is the mating ritual and as mentioned by other comments, if they don't return to mate every seven years they'll go insane and die in agony. In the beginning of the next movie it is not stated why saavik doesn't come home with them but it's because she's pregnant from keeping Spock alive.

  • @BigGator5

"Kirk, I thank you. What you have done is..."
"What I have done, I had to do."
"But at what cost? Your ship. Your son."
"If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul."
Not an entirely bad movie, but being between two really great movies has not helped it's assessment objectively.
Fun Fact: In the opening credits, there is an extra long pause between William Shatner and DeForest Kelley's names, where Leonard Nimoy's name would normally be.
Old Man Yells At Sky Fact: According to Robin Curtis in the Blu-ray making-of documentary, Christopher Lloyd didn't fully understand the use of the communicators. He would often shout his lines into the air rather than speak into the communicator. An example she used: When he says "Bring me up" while on the Genesis Planet, he yelled at the sky as if the ship could hear him. He had to be repeatedly told not to yell at the sky.
Better Saavik Fact: When negotiating Kirstie Alley's contract for Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (1982), Paramount Studios did not offer or include any options or clauses regarding any possible sequels. According to director Leonard Nimoy, this left Alley open to negotiate a new contract for this film, resulting in Alley's excessive salary demands, which led to her being dropped and replaced by Robin Curtis. I personally think Robin Curtis makes for a better Valcan to be honest.

Great to see you phrase or as “starting the journey”, it’s a journey I’ve been on for decades. There’s a reason Star Trek has survived 60 years, it IS a journey, it’s fun, it’s deep, it makes you think, consider things you maybe hadn’t thought of, and challenges your preconceived ideas without being “preachy” or telling you what to think. It presents concepts and allows you, the intelligent viewer to come to your own conclusions.

Without having seen the original TV series somethings can be lost when watching the movies, aspects of the Vulcan culture and other aspects of characters. Sarik, Spocks father appears in a very good episode of the original TV series which if you had watched the show when it aired in the late 60's, when this movie came out this was the first time seeing his character in a long long time, not to mention things like seeing the Enterprise being destroyed had a bigger emotional impact because of that for anyone that was a fan of the show at the time.
The alien villains in this movie are a recurring villain species from the original tv series as well called the Klingons (The Federation and Klingons are in a cold war of sorts in the TV series and in most of the movies) and Kirk has run into and faced off with other Klingons before. They appeared briefly at the beginning of the first movie, but like Sarik this was the first time they'd been full seen for over 15+ year.

The visual effects boss Ken Ralston (who was with Industrial Light and Magic) hated the "Enterprise" and took unholy delight in creating and filming the ship's destruction.

Sadly, modern Trek productions seem to be trying to turn him into Star Trek's "Thanos." Right down to them deciding to put one of his descendants on the Enterprise crew in Strange New Worlds (because @#$% continuity). He was a great villain, certainly, but he's not CLOSE to having the all-encompassing impact that Thanos does on the MCU.

Hot take: I love this movie more than the Wrath of Khan. It feels more epic and is a really fun adventure. Christopher Lloyd, while not as iconic as Ricardo Montalban as Khan, plays an amazing villain and has one of the most satisfying deaths in the series. Search for Spock is the Star Trek movie I always rewatch the most. It’s honestly my favorite.

@@Caseytify I'm more than happy to.
It's certainly a film with issues. It was crippled by budget cuts, the unavailability of ILM, a writer's strike, and extensive meddling by Paramount, resulting in obvious visual effects failures, uneven pacing and writing, and a schizophrenic tone often at odds with itself. These are issues that would have been difficult for even a seasoned director to manage all at once.
It's also a film that still manages to be watchable and well-acted in spite of itself (ESPECIALLY by DeForest Kelly, who gives perhaps his single finest performance as McCoy during the scene with his father).

You might be shocked to find that newer Star Trek fans actually enjoy Star Trek 5. They don’t have the baggage longtime fans do. It’s not gonna be anybodies favorite but humorous interaction amongst the big 3 keep it’s enjoyable for them. New fans think that longtime fans are being too harsh on the film.

Star trek tv was more about philosophy and exploration mixed with the necessity of self defense in space. It's not like the star wars formula of space battles and sword fights. Although star trek has its fair share of those as well.

Star Trek 4 is a fantastic movie. It is definitely the most fun of the original film series. Star Trek 5 well its hard to describe you'll just have to see it for yourself but it's definitely one of the weirdest Star Trek movies. Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country is definitely the most important Star Trek film because it shapes the future for all of Star Trek and its universe. Also if you love Spock he definitely plays an very important part of the 6th film.

I always liked this movie. It has some great moments: stealing the Enterprise, return of Sarek, destruction of Enterprise, Kirk vs. Kruge, ending on Vulcan.
You will like part 4. Part 4 is well liked even by those who know nothing about Star Trek.
Part 5 is not as bad as people say, again it has some great moments.
    Part 6 is great.
Part 7 on focus on The Next Generation crew. Before watching those, there are a few The Next Generation episodes you should watch for context. "Best of Both Worlds 1 and 2" and "Family".
Also, part 1 is a well made, well acted film. It is a little slow at times and has a lot of shots of the ship and music, but it is interesting.
