nice. He has a good teacher. Do you think it’s very convincing ? I would expect more madness

Not sure It was ever really supposed to convey madness, moreso strength underneath oppression. He and shost were contemporaries with very similar political views even if he was 15 year younger than the latter and were both targeted by agents of the soviet regime. In fact, most of those who knew them said that Shostakovich had a ‘more tragic view’ on life and Prokofiev was generally very much delighted by it all despite their very real struggle.

@@gregmax1321 Shostakovich was the most awarded composer in the ussr and a national hero, the idea that he was always somehow under threat or being oppressed by the Soviets is, I think, nonsensical

@@Notna-e5s I did my thesis on the intersection of post romanticism in Russian classical music and Soviet politics, This for me is one of those things in life that each man has that he knows a little bit too much about for this reason or that, and I can tell you that while You are correct in that that’s definitely how it appears on the surface, Shostakovich was most definitely not a patriot for the Soviet government in the way he was for the Russian people and was definitely at odds with them on and off, more at odds and under pressure than not, for the majority of his life. While He certainly appeared outwardly and officially disposed to conformity towards the USSR, so did many Russians who knew to do the opposite was to risk death for yourselves and their families, but they also didn’t have the status of being an international musical celebrity to use as a bargaining chip in order to bend that, or the platform to use it as protest. you’re correct In that he was praised as a national hero as well, but the majority of that came from that international celebrity status and worldwide recognition as a composer who happened to come from the Soviet Union, not internally for them thinking he was their best or most representative. When I say it was a ‘bargaining chip’, what I mean is it’s worth noting that that is one of the main reasons he wasn’t executed when he did go against their ideals for art and formalism. The USSR believed that his music, which as we all know was mostly folk inspired and very ubiquitous in its appeal to all listeners around the world, gave positive merit and worthiness of recognition amongst the composers of other nations, basically painted the USSR in a good light as the home to brilliants artists, athletes, etc. however throughout his life despite this, he was never out from under the scrutiny of Stalin, literally directly. There are many of his pieces which are definitely mocking and anti-formalist towards the Union which many times were met with warnings, threats and disapproval from the government. I definitely recommend you do some research on his letters to isaak glikman as well as the recorded perspectives of his children and other relatives regarding his political views. It is said by quite a few close to him including his contemporaries that He played the role of a yurodivy for the majority of his life- a religious fool who played stupid, only because he knew it was his only means of protest, his children have also supported these claims. He did this also to survive. You have to remember, Shostakovich lost friends in the great purge on top of countless other friends and family members who suffered and died under his regime and those who supported it as well. As sad as it might seem that his entire life as a musician was defined by his secret struggles and quiet protest against the Soviet government, the fact they occasionally awarded him for it only makes it more satisfying to be honest. The best example I can think of off the top of my head to show his true feelings is in a letter he sent, he spoke of one of his close friends who was in the arts that was executed in the great purge after being arrested, and states that there’s a plaque in his house that says ‘in this house lived (his friends name, I can’t remember it)’, but he stated it should instead have said ‘in this house, his wife was brutally murdered’ [by the ussr].

A bit slow, yes. I would suggest Zlata Chochieva's version, for example. Really energetic and rythmic.

It's madness just playing this etude. It's very fucking hard to play. I would rather do Chopin Winterwind than Prok op.2, n.1
