Thanks for the tips!!! Really like the idea of not spraying and timing the seedbed prep, planting, mowing and then over seeding 👍. I’m going to use this method this summer.
I too have success with purple tops in western NY. I’ll mix with brassicas for early fall to late season forage. As you I use strips with Sunflowers for cover and forage in summer and clover strips for spring thru fall. My strips are approximately 75😢by 25 yards wide! Sunflowers after mowed in the fall can be reseeded with winter rye ! Thanks Dave for your help and advice! Good hunting!🦌
How's she goin'? This is some great info Dave. I would never think that a food plot would take so much care and attention, but obviously it pays off. Thanks for sharing your experiences!! Take 'er easy!!
You know the struggles I've had with my food plot. After learning my lesson and no longer spraying my plots, I hope the soil has recovered, and we'll have some great success. I was always told that when the weather turns cold, turnips turn sweeter and that's when the deer will start to eat them, I'm not sure as I have never to grown them, maybe I'll give it a try this year. Can you share with us how was your taste test of the turnip. Great information as always Dave.
Your strip idea is very good tip- i see exact same up here on tug hill-maybe even an pine top or tree debris-not really planned but ive seen the results from that kinda cover- maybe where a tree fell into plot- deer use it and feel more secure entering there
deer devour purple tops and daikon hog radishes on tug hill in upstate ny- they go crazy over them- tops bulbs and all fall to spring- digging thru deep snow to get them in winter-Mike
Never used turnip but I have planted brassica before. Similar to the turnip in that they eat the greens then the root, clover is king though, I’ve seen deer dig the snow away to graze on clover. Great tips here Dave, I’m going to try the reseed and mow.
I’m in Alexander co NC ,,I have eight to 17 deer each night in my turnip patch and yes they eat it to the ground eventually,,however here they start eating it at Christmas each year because I plant an acre of Austrian winter peas late August which is at the center of their attention from late September till Christmas and by then they have the whole acre mowed down to the soil , I do mix in lettuce and mustard greens with the turnip greens and from what I can tell they like the turnip greens best.
Dave - you run a White tractor! You are the Man!! Yep turnips worked for me in VA. Deer ate them late season. Like mid December through winter. Now in Tennessee the lack of water killed off my turnips. So not sure how deer would react to them. Plan on trying again this year.
I did a food plit one year and it actually turned out better than I would have expected.. I hunt exclusively on public at the moment so not really possible. But I definitley would do another one if I had the chance. You know this better than anyone, but there's something pretty cool about growing your own stuff. Maybe I'll try turnips next time. Lol
Nice video Dave. I do not plant food plots (don’t own much land to do it). However my buddy uses turnips and they are hit the hardest in fall and winter
I planted Turnips one year and the deer mowed down the tops after the first frost but never touched the Turnips themselves. I dug some up and left them on top of the soil along with a few apples and they ate the apples but left the Turnips. My buddies down in Iowa plant several food plots in Turnips and the deer dig them up like crazy. 🤷♂️
2 years ago i planted turnips for the first time and they did great, but last year i tried them again and they deer ate them as soon as they got a few inches tall
I have not tried turnips. I have planted clover in my plot but the area is extremely wet. Will turnips do well in a wet area? Was thinking maybe beans like Antlerking Red Zone if you are familiar with that.
I love that you don't use any herbicides on your plots! Leaving some cover in your plot for the deer is a great tip. Thanks, Dave!
I appreciate you watching Matt 👍
Very interesting. Cool to learn about and see the process. Awesome results too. No wonder you have farmer in your title. Well done. Have a great day.
Haha! Thanks for watching Steve 👍

Your food plot looks great. I planted turnips, and the deer hardly touched them.
Maybe you need to show them how to eat them 😂
Thanks for watching Rande 👍
@@HuntingFarmerOfficialI never did try to eat my turnips. I see you did though..

I didn’t know deer ate turnips. I have eaten turnips and I don’t hate them but I’m not sure the best way to prepare them.

Turnips won’t like extremely wet areas. Wonder if deer would eat rice? 😂
