  • In today's episode of Truth OR Myth, we're taking a look at the USS Enterprise-A, as first seen in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. I get a LOT of comments about the History of this Particular Enterprise, and how I reconcile the different Beta Canon sources in to one cogent narrative. Well this video is how! I hope you enjoy!

    I was 8 year old when TOS premiered on NBC in '68; it's a touchstone of my youth as I was a BIG science fuction afficianado, courtesy of my mother. But when I heard that after a decade of drought, and finally seeing the ENTERPRISE Refit cruising past Earth with the sun peeking over the horizon, well, it sent that familiar tingle of anticipation up my spine to see how gorgeous the Connie had really become!

    This is probably the only ship - unless I am hugely mistaken of a ship not only having one previous name but two before getting the name Enterprise.
    I know I think in beta canon that the Enterprise E that ship would have been the Honorious if the Enterprise D hadn't been destroyed, unless that is totally fabricated in my imagination, but I am sure I read it, and of course the Defiant 2, being the Sau Paulo getting that special dispensation to be renamed Defiant (also so they dont have to faff about with the stock footage they already had, but I liked the carpets, ha ha)
    The A's bridge in Undiscovered Country looks very fitting for the ship and would have to be my favourite of that era, it may have a military look but it also looks to me warm and welcoming as well, but then again, it could be the crew that gives me that feeling, they are like old family or friends you go to see and while their place is all strict and imaculate, they make it warm and at ease, and each of the offiers have ther quirks as well.
    The ending of The Undiscovered Country actually does upset me when I watch it, I may not have grown up with TOS but the movies I enjoyed (Motion Picture i tend to not watch that much, sorry folks) they would be on a Sunday afternoon or in hoiday periods like christmas and easter etc and I would settle down at my grandparents house while they napped on the sofa or one went to bed I would be left to watch the TV in front of the coal fire and enjoy the film.
    The Enterprise A's voyages I guess are covered alot more in beta canon with booksm I guess like the Excelsior as well.
    The uniforms as well, they were a good choice, they were probably in service a fair bit was well before they were issues without the jumper (as seen in Yesterdays Enterprise and I think when Picard is stabbed through the heart) I prefer the jumpers underneath the jacket, without to me anyway it looks a little strange.
    The main deflector was always what facinated me, going from the copper look when in slow speeds and then I think full impulse and warp it is glowing that recognisable blue, you don't see that anymore, though deflector dishes have become to look more like staned glass windows like the one on the Sovereign class and more than the blue glow.
    I wonder how many times the ship ended up back in drydock for hull repairs from battle...
    Another great video and thankyou, Peace and Long Life, sir

    Whenever I see that scene from Search for Spock when the enterprise "self destructs" I cannot help but notice how much of the ship is left in the debris. Seems like the self destruct sequence really only affects the saucer section, and the star drive flies away, damaged but intact. Seems like that's the part of the ship you'd REALLY wanna blow up! It'd suck to have a chuck of busted up ship that huge flying through space, carrying a warp core, possible a computer core as well???

    • @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
      @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Theres actually a Beta Canon explanation for that taken directly from the behind the scenes information... You know how everyone enters codes to activate Self Destruct and then the Computer Asks for the final code? Well apparently there are several final codes all of which give different outcomes depending on the situation. Since the ship was in orbit of a planet, Kirk chose the option to not blow up the core and instead have the antimatter jettisoned in to space and have the bulk of the ship burn up in the planets atmosphere... If he had changed the last digit to a 1 instead of a zero, then that code would have blown up the ship using the Antimatter... There are several other digits again all of which initiate a different self destruct given whatever the situation is :)

      @KnaveMurdok 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics Fair enough! Thank you!

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics While having a choice between different forms of self-destruct kind of makes sense, dumping anti-matter into space just seems to be a horrible idea, particularly if you do so orbiting a planet you plan to be on when the ship blows. The anti-matter would fall into the planet's atmosphere, annihilate with the normal matter there, which - depending on how much anti-matter there is abord the ship - has the potential to crack the planet or incinerate its atmosphere. You don't want that to happen while you're on the planet.
      I would assume the default mode of self-destruct assures the anti-matter aboard the ship does not pose a threat after the ship is destroyed. I'm speculating here, but one way to do it, would be to burn off the anti-matter inside the warp core, overloading the power-distribution infrastructure of the ship until bad things happen first to the components and then powergrid itself. I'm not sure there's any mention of how the power conduits on TOS and TMP era ships work, but in later series it is mentioned that they're plasma based. Overheating plasma is an excellent way to make things go boom, even things that have no inherent ability to do so, and this trait of plasma could be used to make sure no senstive component survive a self destruct. If they're burnt out or molten or whatever plasma can do to them, before the bigger conduits blows and tear the hull apart, there's nothing to salvage. Assuming the Enterprise-A's power distribution system was already plasma based as that would even explain why drive section would seem to relatively intact: It's power conduits would be designed to handle much larger loads than others (e.g. those running consoles on the bridge) because the systems there use a lot more power than those in the saucer section. Suppose there was not been enough energy to overload them before the anti-matter was used up, so the hull around them wasn't blown to bits like the hull of the saucer section was. But as long as the plasma conduits that power each system are strong enough to carry loads that destroy the system beyond repair, there wouldn't anything left to salvage even if the hull remained intact - apart from the burnt out hull, that is. And it works, even if the anti-matter supply is depleted to the point it is no longer sufficient to turn the ship into a cloud of dust.
      All in all: this seems to be a much more elegant and more importantly thorough solution than using explosives or simply turning off the anti-matter containment. After all: the purpose of a self destruct is to prevent sensitive systems from ending up in enemy hands. Spectacular explosion might means to that end but they're not why a self destruct is initiated. But I know this is just a bit of my personal head canon and should be taken with giant boulder of star-dust.

    • @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
      @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MrAranton Well first, I didnt write it :P So dont kill the messenger. Second, Im sure that whatever concerns you have are actually moot. Starfleet is not a stupid organization that wouldnt consider everything that you've said here, meaning those contingencies would all be accounted for. Starfleet is an organization that has back ups on back ups on backup after all. So if a scenario is dumping antimatter, it probably already contains provisions to make that antimatter not a threat to the planet it's orbiting... So I dont think you have much to worry about ;) :P

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics I wasn't attacking you. It's just: There are plenty of examples of beta- or even alpha-canon where writes screwed up and put out nonsense. When I recognize such nonsense, I like to replace that with head-canon that actually makes sense and on occasion I like to to talk about it.
      I think simply dumping anti-matter with no means to contain or control it afterwards is not something Starfleet would deliberatly do. And how do you contain or control anti-matter if you're stranded on planet with nothing but the stuff you were able get off the ship in a hurry?
      That is why I suggested the "provisions to make sure that anti-matter is not a threat to the planet it's orbiting" might look like. I.e.: Not dumping it, but using it to make sure anything the enemy might take advantage of is destroyed. Including the anti-matter itself, which would be free fuel to any enemy with the means to safely collect it.

    Part of my head canon, based on some background screen displays at the end of Trek IV, is that the problems at the start of Trek V are from attempting transwarp and experiencing widespread hull microfractures. This would lead to having to replace, among other parts, the entire bridge module, which is why the bridge in V looks different from the one in IV.

    Hello David!
    Would you make a video, such as this one up here, about Ralph McQuarrie's Enterprise from the scrapped ST film 'Planet of the Titans'?
    I recently learnt that the ship is basically Alpha Canon, because they used the model as one of the spacecraft parked within the Earth's Spacedock on one of the TMP era films. I was quite surprised, and also rejoiced, by it, because I simply had no idea thereof up until several weeks ago.
    All the additional info about the starship would, of course, have to be drawn from the Beta Canon, though.

      No, the original Enterprise returned to spacedock at the beginning of ST III and was to be decommissioned. Kirk and his senior officers stole it from spacedock. The ship was largely running on automated systems which were knocked out when it was attacked by the Klingon Bird Of Prey, hence the decision to scuttle the ship rather than try to fight,

    In retrospect it would have been more efficient for Starfleet just to pump out more Mirandas and Excelsiors… those ships lasted over a century in service,.
    And the Excelsior in beta canon even got upgraded to Odyssey class standards with Quantum slipstream drive and other advances in the 25th century (definately more than just a minor refit…), so in the end they did kind of get transwarp.
    The Constitution refit _refit_ was a bit of a nostalgic waste of resources.

    After the Kitomer talks, the Novel "Ashes of Eden" takes place where a retired Enterprise A is "gifted" to protect a planet aided by Captains Kirk and Scott, who are now retired as well. A fight ensues and the Enterprise A is eventually destroyed protecting the planet it was acquired to patrol for.
