who ever left the comment saying "if it bothers you so much you should stop making candles," is considering the fact that we're not meant to be inhaling oils all day in small spaces. Our bodies need clean air, and if a respirator helps you live your passion I'm all for it!
I’ve never had allergies or issues with FO’s. I’ve been soaping for five years and recently added melts. The other night I suddenly woke up. I couldn’t breath! Period. I was pounding my chest and what little air I could get in was not helping and I was wheezing. I guess I would liken it to an asthma attack. We nearly called an ambulance but things calmed down. I have a doctor appointment next week and I’m getting a proper mask too. Take care of your lungs 😊
I’m planning to start my business within a month or two but I’m very grateful for you, your advice , & helpful tips . Do you have any way for me to ask you specific questions about candle making??
Just found your channel and I’m super happy I did!! I just started my candle business (launching officially June 1st) your videos are super helpful while I keep learning more on this journey
I’m also bothered by the vapors! A vanilla oil actually burnt my lungs and I was having bad pains in my chest for days! This is when I realized I should really invest in a respirator even the throw aways help! ❤️ making candle for two years now and still learning! Love your videos!!
AH!!!! Thank you so much!!! This is very helpful!!!! The heat gun is my bestfriend and the phone tripod I am about to purchase!!!!! THank you again Erica!!!
Great video, Erica! I've never heard of an electric lighter and may check it out. Also, I've found silicone pot holders at the Dollar Tree to use as a mat for my pouring pots and they work great. 😊
This is so helpful and I love your energy!! ✨I recently found this channel and have watched almost all your videos, thank you for all your awesome help and great advice!🦋
Have you tried a full face respirator for your candles? I've done research to start a resin company and with that the fumes are worse. They recommend the full face one to protect yourself. I have athsma as well so I understand the heavy feeling.
Just a note- in South Africa all measuring equipment needs to be calibrated according to manufacturer specifications for selling to the public. It is a legal requirement. I love your videos ❤💕
Girlll I have pretty much only ever used an electric candle lighter for lighting candles and was actually shocked you just heard of them! I'm glad you finally joined the club lol they are a GAMECHANGER.
Some of the items you mentioned I definitely forgot to add to my list. I liked that electric lighter and I will look into getting one for myself. And I definitely forgot to add it all up to my ever-growing spending list. Great video. Thanks for the tips.
Glad beakers do make a great eco-friendly option! Fragrance oil does not eat PET grade plastic-it is important to look for this when you’re purchasing your plastic.
So...I also have Asthma and Allergies and love candle making! Check out the Rabbit air purifer. Amazon sells them but they also have their own website...of course. All I can say is game changer!!!!
Thanks Erica! I've been using infrared thermometer as well, not the one you showed here, I use a Ryobi. I'm curious about the temperature being off by 10-15 degrees, which is kind of a lot. My issue that I am still trying to remedy is the jar heat and have only used the infrared; if my infrared is 10-15 degrees hotter than I've been struggling with the jars needlessly, lol. I would be curious how you know it's not the manual thermometer that is off vs. the infrared? I don't know any other way to measure glass heat than with the infrared so would be curious what your thoughts are on that. Cheers!
I think its normal to get sick from all the fragrance chemicals, probably not healthy at those levels. Definitely get fresh air. I took mine into the garage and vent with a fan.
Does your respirator help prevent candle nose so you can smell your candles better & sooner after making a batch? It used to take my nose a week to recover well enough to smell test my candles.
Hey, I’ve been watching many of your videos lately and noticed that you used to use colour for your wax melts, have you stopped doing this? And do they still sell well without colour? I’ve been thinking about stopping using colour because of frosting, but don’t want to impact sells
I use pronged thermometer. Should I dip the prong all the way to the bottom or on the surface of the melted wax? coz the temperature difference is about 10 to 15 degrees
Hello Erica. Thank you for all the great, informative videos and links!! I have a question regarding the respirator: What filters/cartridges do you use for candle-making? I have searched 3M but am not sure which ones to purchase with the mask. Thank you and anyone else who can answer!! :)
Dude! I tested my laser thermometer against my Thermapen (not a chance I would put that bad ass kitchen tool in soy wax, I tested hot water). They were 12 degrees off. Son of a gun, that means I should go back and relook at all my old testing/pouring methods. Man thanks for the heads up!!!!!
Erika claims those pink filters are only available at welding stores... here in the US they are at Home Depot for $5. Go check it out. My husband is in Pest Control. He applies pesticides and wears these so I think you will be okay with smells. Try OdoBan if you want to eliminate smells.
I never claimed they are Only available at welding stores, I just simply stated where I found mine. I’m sure you can find them many other places like Lowe’s and Home Depot 🙂
I have a question for you. I also asked in my candle resource group. I was measuring my amt of FO according to solid wax. You said to use the silicone pad on the scale. Do you weigh your wax hot? Can you please go into detail as to why you do that if that's the case? I'm newer to candle making and love ur videos!!
I use very large wax melters that are set to around 190-195 degrees. When i pour it into my pitchers it’s very hot. The pitcher is sitting on the scale which will inevitably get hot too. So I get the hot pads to try to protect it!
I bought the same silicone cups a few months back, so perfect! Are you aiming the laser thermometer at the outside of the container, or directly inside it when getting these readings? Very strange, unless the laser is faulty. Great video Erica! Good to see you in such high spirits btw :)
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo The only other thing I can think of... If your laser has multiple dots like some I've used before, it will take an average reading from all surfaces they touch. Confused the crap outta me when I first got one.
Erica! Thank you for sharing your info!! My biggest concern while using Wooden Wick's Beeswax Coco Creme on my large clear glass jars is the wax not sticking to the walls. All seemed well when I let them "cool" in my heated restroom but perhaps my studio got too cold during the week? Any help with my ongoing candle problem is welcomed!
Silly question... I want you to get the benefit from your affiliate links. When I click the link and add to my cart, do I have to purchase it thru TH-cam>AffLink>AmazonCart, or will you still get money if it adds to my cart and shows in my Amazon app and purchase thru the Amazon app...?
You are so sweet! As long as you click on one of my links, the cookies will stay in your computer for 24 hours so whatever you purchase I will get credit for ☺️ thank you so much! ❤️
I literally thought about you and your respirator this week when I was pouring test candles and making soap in the same space - not the best decision I've ever made ;). I was so overwhelmed by the competing fragrances that I was sick to my stomach. I also have ocular migraines (and mast cell issues) so I wasn't surprised but... I guess I'll be getting a respirator next lol. Thanks for another great video! :) Jeanne @HarvestHerbals
I do! Honestly I always had issues with lighting until I got my new lens for my camera! (It allows more light into the lens so even if I don’t have tons of light in the room it still looks like it)
Hmmm.. possibly 😅 it would probably be later on down the road though because of covid and everything. I’m super introverted but there may be a time in the future where I would consider it! ❤️

You are amazing Erica
Some real interesting information. Just purchased the lighter.
Nice. I have a similar video coming soon on this topic as well! 😆🤣 Good job. Thanks Erica! Great minds think alike! 😁😃
Haha love that 😆
Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you for taking the time to break everything down.
Thank you for taking the time to watch ☺️❤️
i just wanna share - i make just small batches of melts or candles and i use shot glasses to measure my fragrance oils.
I use shot glasses as well. But these are like oversized shot glasses. Maybe like a 4 oz glass.
Omg this is genius!! Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️
I like using glass ones because you can just clean them with alcohol and don't have to have worry about the fragrance oils seeping into the silicone.
Thank you!! Super helpful!! 😊
This is perfect timing for me, as I am just beginning. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for sharing. I’m new to the production side. I’m so grateful that creators share🥰

I’ve found the electric lighters very useful for cotton wicks but they are very difficult to use if you make wooden wick candles.

For fragrance oils or essential oils, use only glass cups to measure it! FO & EO eats plastic, paper, silicone!
